I need some army-building help...

12-02-2004, 07:11
I'm trying to build a realistic army in this game. How much military funding would a nation with 10 million people, an economy rating of reasonable, and .9% of the people in the military have?

If this isn't the board this belongs on, could you link me to the one it does belong on? Thanks in advance.

i use 10% of my pop for peace time, and 30% in war.
i'd wait if i were you to launch a war.

OOC: Well, the good rule of thumb is that you can theoretically field about 2% of your population in times of war. In times of peace, you might consider fielding far less, say .1% at most, 1% if and only if you have compulsive military service.

As for your economy, you won't be able to do much with a reasonable economy. Your equipment will be sub-standard at best, awful at worst. You won't have much of a navy at all, and few tanks and planes.

For you, here's what I'd say you have on hand. (All estimates for peacetime. Please remember that if you draft soldiers, you're armies tend to be untrained):

Army:
50,000 total troops
1 Army (contains all soldiers)
4 Infantry Regements (10,000 or so troops armed with AK-47s, M-14s or M-16A1s and WWII era machine guns)
1 Armored Regement (5000 or so infantry in APCs (pick a type) supported by 400 or so cold war era tanks)

Airforce:
144 total aircraft
F-16s
F-4 Fantoms
Mig-23s
similar era craft

Navy: (Assuming you aren't landlocked)
1 A. Burke class Destroyers
4 O. H. Perry Class Frigates
(Maybe) 1 sub with dessel engins or
(Maybe) 1 Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier under cunstruction

that is waaaaaaay to much, your economy would crash burn and then fall into a soggy ditch

i usually only have a 1million men as a standard army size in peace and war, i can (at time of writing) raise it to 10 million when necessary

it is?
i have trade deals going on...10% is normal for me
my economy can take it, especially since i was doing a great business in arms manufacturing..
you got to remember every one in my nation between 18 and 25 is in my amy...

OOC : Depending upon how realitically you want to RP then you have to take into account the support units etc. Like supply ships, landing craft, medics, engineers, logistics etc. I like to be qiute realistic, like not saying "we mobilise 500,000 troops", which i could do, but then how the hell do I get them where I wish to put them?

Personally I have around 365,000 men in my armed services (about 0.2% of the population), only 190,000 are actually combat troops. As I say, it depends how realistic you want to be. Oh, and 200,000 reservists (but they are less well trained and have inferior weapons)

i will not post my military break down, ATM, but less than 9% of my pop is in the military, about 40% of that is suport.
i also have 2.2 mil troops out on loan.
leaving me with 7.2 mil troops
2.88 mil are suport
4.32 mil are combat

Erm... Thanks for the help, but...

Thanks for the other stuff, too.

Firstly, a reasonable wartime percentile would be 5%, and .5% for peace.

Second, a strong air force is always useful. My nation's Victoria Aerial Fleet has 30 squadrons of 7 fighters, plus the Victoria, an aircraft carrier sized vessel which is held up with an experimental grav system. It has already made a successful run aiding Terronia against rebels. At your point, however, stick with fighters. For ground forces, invest heavily in infantry and portable turrets. It works wonders in any terrain. I'd be more specific, but I wouldn't want you passing me up.

Trick 'o the Trade: If someone is buying WMDs, make sure they get all their detonators from you. If they try to launch at you, flip on the failsafes.

Normally, I've got .5% on active duty, and another 3.5% in the reserves.

In war time, it's gone up to 8% before.

What I'd like is just showing how much funding (In U.S. dollars, preferably) I'd have.

Do you know your defense ranking? The last one came up about a month ago. If not this won't work, but if so go here:

http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=122701

Only instead of 5000 for "M," you'll probably want more like 1500-2000 since you're modern tech.

Nope, I don't know my defense rating. But what about my alternate nation, Barrel Rollia 2?

Economy of Frightful, Compulsory Military Service (Conscription), and a soldier morale rating so low that it could kill someone!

Well the nationstates GDP calulator is generally useful as a giude:

your military budget (if defense spending is 15% of your governement's budget) is roughly as such:
http://www.pipian.com/stuffforchat/gdpcalc.php?nation=Barrel%20Rollia&defenseprovided=1&defense=15&militarybudget=1

the percentage of your budget you spend on defense will liekly depend on your govenrments priorities ie if defence isn't mentioned in your nation description then it will very liekly be at a lower level.

i hope that helps a bit

I use 1%, .1% is ridiculous.
