Astoria, Shinrita (Feb. 8 )- A 37 day standoff between government police forces and 151 members of the International Religious Recognition Commitee (IRRE), leaving 37 IRRE members dead, and 11 police officers wounded. The standoff began when IRRE members held a schoolhouse at gunpoint, holding about 200 students and teachers hostage, protesting Christianity's need to be Shinrita's national religion. Shinrita does not have a national religion in a nation of predominately agnostics, but the government does respect the right of a persons religion.

Police were on the scene almost immediately, but could not infiltrate the building because of hostages. A negotiator was brought in, but talks between police and the IRRE broke down. After 6 Shinrita Elite Commandos infiltrated the building 2 nights ago, the hostages were all freed, with the exception of 4 children who died because of malnutrition during the standoff. Many psychiatrist and therapists were on the scene after the release of the hostages, awaiting to treat traumatized children. Afterwards, A "Sweep" team of officers entered the building, where they were confronted by armed IRRE members, who fired upon them.

President Seth Hunter has declared the IRRE movement an "insurgent" organization that is attempting to overthrow the great democracy that Shinrita has established. Astoria Police have issued warrants for the arrest of IRRE leaders, Shirley Botz and Joseph Peron. A police spokesperson said that once the duo were captured, they would be extradited to Trabia to stand federal trial on charges of kidnapping, endangerment of minors and violation of human rights. The IRRE members currently under custody are cooperating with police and providing documents and information to assist in the arrest of these people.

In security terms, airports have beefed up security, and schools now are required to have cameras at all entrances. Bus and train stations are also now under National Guard troop security, as well as private security organizations.
