OCC: how about electric units killing people in airplanes that are using fly-by-wire systems? EMP would destroy those systems
Maybe, though that is not what he was claiming happened. Anyhow, even then those planes whould be able to make emergency landings without very many, if any, casualties. I also don't expect that many planes to be affected by such a small EMP.

For blast radius it is. The EMP from a nuke could cover an area the size of the entire US if detonated high enough.

Yes and an EMP weapon with the right yield could do the same without the release of radiation if detonated at an altitude of about 20-30 km just like a nuke.
