Democracy in No-Dachi Yo

Today came the announcement that has been the talk of the Community of No-Dachi Yo for the past few months; that is the form their new democracy will take. The document, released from the acting President’s (Saami Kobe) office outlined the kind of system that will be set up, and he asked for advice from other world leaders and help in setting up the necessary civil service offices etc.

The basic outline proposed is below;

-A Parliament of 100 seats, each seat represents a region of roughly the same population size. This will represent the people, and decide upon new laws etc. Also the members of Parliament will receive no more than the national average GDP p.c., it is hope this way to lessen careerism, and this can only benefit the people.

-The Prime Minister will be the leader of the majority party and will decide upon a cabinet.

-Each settlement will have an elected local council, areas of high agriculture shall be grouped into regions of suitable size and a local council will represent these regions.

-There are no plans for a Presidential Office; therefore the current one will be dismantled. The PM will lead the country under the scrutiny of Parliament.

-The first election in No-Dachi history will take place in the next few months.

"Well, we are now around a quarter of the way through The Community's first election, and we have some interesting national exit poll results so far.

-38% Prosperity Party
-32% Democracy Party
-16% Buddhist Party
-14% Other

These are interesting results, it seems if things go on like this then the formation of the government will depend upon the Buddhist Party allying with one of the major parties. However we must remember these are overall results from all of our exit polls, so the pattern in your area may be very different.

The results for the "other" parties share of the vote does seem surprisingly high, however it is early on, and the proportional representation system will leave us with more minority seats than a "first past the post" system would; but the argument for this is it is more democratic, and gives a better representation of the overall attitudes of the public."

"We are now about fourteen hours into the election, so the polls will be open for about another ten hours. In our exit polls there seems to have been a slight swing towards the Democracy party, they are now about equal. There has also been a swing for the Buddhist Party at the expense of the more minor parties. So our exit polls show this;

-36% Prosperity Party
-35% Democracy Party
-19% Buddhist Party
-10% Other

"There are now only a few hours until the polls will close. As expected there are reports of large voter turnouts for this momentus election of the first democratic government in No-Dachi history. It now seems almost certain that, judging by our exit polls, the government will be a coalition, with the Buddhist Party joining with either the Democracy Party or the Prosperity Party; so really it is they who will decide the government.

There have been reports of frantic meetings between Buddhist Party representitives and leaders of the two main parties. These are only recent reports, so we cannot tell you any more than that at this time. So as it stands from our exit polls;

-37% Prosperity Party
-39% Democracy Party
-18% Buddhist Party
-6% Other

So if our exit polls indicated the result, at this time if the DP and BP allied, they would command a 14 seat overall majority. If the PP and BP allied there would be a 10 seat overall majority. However we must not forget that the minor parties may gain seats and aid one or other of the major parties also."

"Welcome back, the voting stations closed around fifteen minutes ago so now all that is left to do is wait for the final results. The first results should start to come through in a few hours.

Our exit poll stands at;

-36% Prosperity Party
-40% Democracy Party
-19% Buddhist Party
-5% Other

So there has been a small swing towards the Democracy Party since we last updated you. But we must remind you that these exit polls are may not reflect the result in your area, or indeed the results nationwide, they merely give an indicator as to the general trends."

"So, the results are finally in; and here they are;

Prosperity Party - 37 seats
Democracy Party - 40 seats
Buddhist Party - 20 seats
Nomadic People's Party - 2 seats
Orthodox Church - 1 seat

So the Democracy Party have won the most seats, however there will have to be a coalition government as no party has an overall majority. There have been confirmed reports of talks between the two main parties and the Buddhist Party, and whichever of them allys with the BP will have a fairly large overall majority.

We will update you when the BP's decision is to be announced."
