15:00 (No-Dachi time) - Altay

Mid-afternoon today it was announced at a press conference the President Kobe had died in his sleep at the age of 64. The leader of the Community of No-Dachi Yo took power in a short civil war agaist an oppressive and backwards Clan regime 26 years ago; he then headed a transitional government before announcing, five years later that he was to be "President for life".

Despite beginning his reign with violence he was generally liked by the population; his economic policies brought an over 10 times increase in GDP per capita. He was also more liberal than many other leaders in that region have been; as due to his economic success, his people were content.

It is belived now that his son will take the reigns of power in this growing nation. Saami Kobe was educated in Europe, but not much more is known, as his father protected his family from public life. Kobe is due to give a statement later on today.

"Last night my father died in his sleep, this comes as a shock to our nation and to me and my family; however it is not a surprise. His health was failing, this was widespread knowledge in the Community, and he himself could feel the life draining from him in the past few months.

My fathers wish for the Community was for me to take over power from him, and as he was my father, and deserves my respect and obidience, i will do this.

My father was a great man, a great general, a great economist; however, in terms of leadership style he was very much from the "old school", the dictatorial school, telling people how to go about thier daily lives and giving them no choice in how they were governed or who governed them. My time in Europe allowed me to see that free speech and democratic rule is a better style for my people.

The democratic countries in Europe are rich and free, we can also be rich and free, we will be rich and free. Therefore I am allowing the first general, multiparty election in our history to take place in The Community of No-Dachi Yo, this is my first, and last Presidential Decree.

Thank you all, may our nation be rich and free at last."

Salutations!

The Leader has instructed me to send his condolences to your nation in their time of mourning, and notes that he applauds the smooth transfer of power. The Leader notes that he himself is immortal, being a ...gentleman of the night, but also encourages such blissfully sanguine transitions to avoid giving succour to one's enemies. This comes of course after years of appearing to be weak by using puppet leaders in the place of good, strong, firm leadership. This was lost thirteen years before when the Leader's mother was attacked by crazed mortals and he himself had cause for the most terrible grief known in Crowloft, still known as the Time of The Great Locking Up of Criminals and Other Riff-Raff.

We congratulate your move to democracy and note that it can only aid your economy, from which Crowloft hopes to benefit once we have re-established our economy after the Hiatus (following the Great Locking Up) to produce something more than baskets.

I remain yours etc

"The Allied States of Rotovia issues it's true and heartfelt condolences to your nation and the family of President Kobe. Whilst I did not know him personnely his death has had a profound impact on us all, his caring and compassionate style of gorvenment has lead his people to great heights both economically and politically.

He was a man admired by many and scorned by none, he was proud and stold tall. The contributions he made to No-Dachi Yo will echoe through out the ages.

But, it is out of trajedy that hope springs. For a new age of democracy and freedom can by seen by all all in No-Dachi Yo, and as the world looks on we join in prayer, not just to mourn the death of great man, but to celibrate the comming of another and the steps of a greater still nation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of No-Dachi Yo on this day, may truth and prosperity be you edict and faith your lamp in this time of darkness and age of light."

Democracy in No-Dachi Yo

In the days and weeks following the announcement that No-Dachi Yo was to make the transition to a democracy there has been a fervour of political activity, new parties and groups have begun to spring up all over the country. Saami Kobe has yet to announce the form the democracy will take, but be it Federal, Parlimentary etc., the seats will be tightly fought for.

In this article we will break down the main parties that have appeared since the announcement was made and look at what they stand for and their chances in any elections, whatever form those elections will take.

Major Parties

The Prosperity Party

This is the party made up of former RFD and Kobe I supporters. They wish to follow the path that Kobe I followed;

- Gradual privatisation
- High amounts of overseas trade
- Education and healthcare spending relatively high
- Between 10-14% defence budget and a strong military
- No desire to become involved in international affairs, only dealing with a few close allies
- Restricted civil and political rights
- Tight immigration policy

It is felt that this party will be a major contender, mainly due to their links with the former President.

The Democratic Party

Surprisingly this party is lead by the former President’s son, Saami Kobe. They wish to extend democracy all over the nation, from the national level, all the way down to the local level.

- Privatisation
- Trade
- Drop in defence budget
- Increase in healthcare and education budgets
- Extend democracy, giving more power to the local government
- Increased participation on the international stage
- Protection of the environment
- Extend civil liberties and free speech

This party may appeal to the people, however the defence cuts may sway some towards the Prosperity Party.

Minor Parties

The Buddhist Party

This party may be a crucial to the two main parties as a potential coalition ally. The people of No-Dachi Yo are very devout and very loyal to the monasteries; however whether this religious following will transfer to political following will remain to be seen.

The Nomadic People’s Party

These are the highly conservative supporters of the old Clan government. They are likely to be contenders for one or two seats but the nomad population is dwindling and they are unlikely to present any major threat.

The Marxist Alliance

Communism has never had a strong appeal in No-Dachi Yo so this party represents a minor or non-existent threat in winning a seat. Their support mainly comes from the Universities and collages, but even here they seem to be in the minority.

The National Freedom Party

This group are the ultra-right wing minority, they have no real support as most nationalist people support the Prosperity Party.

The Orthodox Church

The Christian minority in the far north were oppressed under the Clan government. This party stands no real chance on the national scale, but in the far north they are likely to be a major part of local government.
