Iraqi forces storm into Iraqi Kurdistan and Shia Zones!

Al Jazeera Satellite Channel

"We are in Baghdad today, the 3rd of Tuesday. We were awaken at about three o'clock in the morning by Ministry of Information members who told us a conference would be held in one hour. We went to the conference to find out that Iraqi forces have entered both the Northern Kurdish Autonomous zone and the Southern Shi'ite Autonomous zone."

"According to Minister of Information Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, Iraqi forces comprimising the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Army Corps have entered the Kurdish region after reaching an agreement with both the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, the two largest parties in the north."

"In the south, the 3rd 'Fast Assault' Corps of the Republican Guard, with the 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 7th Army Corps have pushed into the south with limited resistance from Shi'ite rebels. He reports that they have taken the border cities of Al Hillah and An Najaf and are on the outskirts of Ad Diwaniyah in the western part of the south, and have taken control of the city of Al Hayy, just south of Al Qut."

"He said that forces had crossed into both zones at approximately 12:00 AM local time."

"We will continue to bring information about these events. We are preparing to send a team both into the north and two into the south to see what is happening."

"This is Saami Ahmed, Al Jazeera from Baghdad."

(OOC: For those that don't know:

Iraq seperated into a Kurdish, Sunni, and Shi'ite area after the war with the US in March/April 2003. The Sunni area, led by Saddam Hussein, united with Syria to form Al Anbar. No one particularly recognizes the Shi'ites since they are very Islamic and follow policies such as Iran in the 1980's. They also support terroristic action against other countries that oppose them.)

"At another news conference held by the Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, he stated that Iraqi forces have

continued to advanced relatively unopposed southward. He has stated that an Nassiryah and ad Diwaniyah had been seized with

practically no fighting. The city of al Amarah has also been taken over by Iraqi forces with only light fighting between the

Republican Guard 3rd Corps and the Shi'ite rebel formations in the city."

"Al Jazeera can confirm all of this. Our correspondents in the south have visited all of these cities and can confirm that

Iraqi forces have retaken these cities. Tensions are somewhat high in Nassiriyah and Najaf, but Iraqi forces have been nice

to the Shi'ite populations, but they have reinstated the secular law that rules Sunni Iraq."

"Al Sahaf has said that their forces are also fifty kilometers from the main Shi'ite city of al Basra. The 3rd Corps of the

Republican Guards are leading the way to al-Basra on the main highways. Shi'ite forces have yet to put up any real resistance

to the Iraqi forces pushing southward."

"Just two days after the start of the offensive into the southern part of the country, Iraqi forces have entered the last city under rebel control: Al Basra."

"There has been heavy fighting on the suburbs of the city, between the Republican Guard forces and the rebels, but the armor of the Republican Guard divisions smashed through the enemy positions quickly."

"Our correspondonts have reported that the rebel forces have taken heavy casulities and are fleeing from the city. Now that the perimeter of their defense had been broken, they no long appear to want to fight, especially not with assault rifles verse tanks and APCs."

"Over night, Iraqi Television also released a videotape of the two top figures of the Shi'ite rebel movement. They were said to have signed a peace agreement after they were captured just outside of the city of Al Basra."

"They seemed to be in good condition in the video. There is only one more leader of the rebels that is on the run. Some citizens claim that he was killed during the fighting in An Nassiriyah, others say that he has fled the country to Kuwait, and yet others say that he is in the port area of Al Faw."

"We will continue to update you on this situation."

Al Haqiqa Al Khals has hesitated to give significant coverage to the seemingly significant activities occuring in and around Al Anbar, which may seem a little odd given the relative proximity of the Democratic Republic to these goings on.

(ooc:As yet Al Khals hasn't really been placed geographically in more specifc terms than that it is somewhere in the Middle East or there about. If I had to place it in real-world terms I'd say it fell more or less where Kuwait is, though it'd be just a little larger.. but I'm sure who ever I talk to that'll result in some sort of clash (shrug))

Most probably this is owing to the Al Khals Kadira Republic party's apparent indecision on exactly what line to take. Should the story become major headline news in Al Khals it is sure to cause unrest with one of the nation's largest minorities (around 5%) being Kurdish, and much of the 8% of population listed as "other Arabic" (ie. none ethnic Al Khali) being Shi'ite. While much of the ordinary Al Khali population is more likely to identify with secular Sunni Iraq, the government is ever fearful of a potential rise of ethnically-spurred religion-based political thought.

Privately, President Omar Qottar has sent of his support for Baghdad's positive actions against the divisive politics of a troublesome few.

New Sydney has responded to calls by Chimaean human rights agencies by condemning the recent military strikes on Shi'ite border towns. The Shi'ite government has not called for any intervention by Chimaea.

A spokesman for the Governor has stated that Chimaea "is watching the situation closely and have given our Naval forces alerts in reference to that situation."

Chimaea has previously made clear its opposition to President Saddam Hussein citing a long and worsening human rights record. The situation is made complicated in that Chimaea has also criticised the mainly-clerical leadership of the Shi'ite state as being "almost dictatorial in nature".

Chimaea has a Naval Carrier Group stationed in friendly territory close to the Middle East, which would be the likeliest to respond.

"Greetings, this is GINA, Western Asia's premier news agency. We come to you now with an update on the new Al Anbari offensive.

"Western Asian authorities in the provinces of Turkey have been accepting refugees from Al Anbar's illegal and undeclared war against the innocent peoples of the Kurdish Autonomous Zone. We have received reports that Al Anbar's forces, under the guise of a peace meeting, slaughtered the leadership of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, as well as those of several other Kurdish political groups.

"It was reported that the meeting hall was surrounded by a force Al Anbari tanks, which then opened fire, killing some 97 civilians and 26 bodyguards, all Kurds.

"The remaining Kurdish Peshmerga forces have rallied and are reportedly resisting all Al Anbari advances, in spite of massed artillery fire against civilian infrastructure and targets in the KAZ. It was reported that over 700 Kurdish civilians have been slaughtered in a combination of aerial bombings, katyushka rocket strikes, and massive artillery shellings.

"Thousands of more civilians are reported to have been seriously injured in the attacks.

"It has been reported to us that the local district of the Homeland Defense units of the Turkish Province are being readied along that border to put pressure on Al Anbar to remain out of the Kurdish domains. Already, Air Corps and available Army Corps units in Turkey have been called to bases in the Eastern part of that province.

"IDF units across the other Western Asian provinces have also been readied and both defensive and offensive forces have been placed on call for the possible defense of Western Asia from the assaults of the territory-grubbing Al Anbari government.

"State Department officials have reported to us that they have sent warnings to Al Anbar stating 'in most stern terms' that Al Anbar needs to respect the independence of the Kurdish Autonomous Zone and the Shi'ite Autonomous Zone.

"This has been a GINA Flash Report, we will return to you when we have more updates."

OOC: I am assuming this is after the Emirates invasion...if not then it's withdrawn until Drak's advice is heeded.

Iraqi Satellite Channel - Briefing by Minister of Defense al-Tai

"Iraqi forces, with the support of Kurdish peshmerga forces from both the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party have secured the northern Kurdish areas. Iraqi-KDP-PUK forces now control approximately 97% of the northern Kurdish provinces of the Iraqi Governorate of Al Anbar."

"Iraqi forces in the south, with support from the local populaces, have advanced into the last remaining stronghold of the Shi'ite rebels: the port city of Umm Qasr. We are engaged in light fighting with rebel troops who are attempting to hold out in the port area and the centre of the city."

The Minister of Defense pauses, smiles for a moment, before asking for questions.

An Al Jazeera reporter stands and voices his question:

"We have reports from 'Western Asia' that Iraqi forces are slaughtering the Kurds in the northern part of the country and are executing leaders of the PUK and KDP political parties. Can you give us some information on that?"

Al Tai: "Total lies. We have entered the north we the support of both those parties. Even though they have betrayed their country in the past, a general amnesty has been announced for them. The are welcomed back into Al Anbar has full citizens.

While we are on this subject of Western Asian propaganda, we must say we are not impressed. They have for a long time spread vicious lies about this government and about Al Anbar in general.

Are they now trying to grab more land up for their Zionist desires? Al Anbar will not fall so easily to the Zionist demands nor will we surrender to their vicious lies.

The international community will uphold Al Anbar if they try to continue their vicious lies and attacks on Al Anbar. The peace treaty of November, 2003, is still in effect. We have obeyed this treaty to the word, yet they continue to spread vicious lies about us and incite attacks on us... They must cease their attacks on us or they shall be in breach of our agreement.

That is all."

Interviewer: "Welcome to Ha'aretzLive's Evening News. For those of you just joining us, we have been examining the claims of the Al Anbar government that seem to lay behind it's push into the Kurdish and Shiite Autonomous Zones...reportedly at the cost of thousands of innocent lives by this time.

"With us we have Professor Mujal Dar Muhammed, a professor from the University of the Beirut who specializes in international relations, specifically on the Middle East..."

Prof. Muhammed, an elderly, slight Arab man, nods his head.

"...who was discussing the recent news reports released by Al Anbar about the invasion of the formerly Autonomous Zones, and especially the latest message in response to Western Asia's decision to aid the Kurds and their Peshmerga fighters. We also are expecting a videophone call from Lt. Gen. Kemal Muggar, the Commanding Officer of the IDF's TurkCom, who will be explaining the role his forces are playing in the sector and the military perspective on this matter. But until then," Turning to the professor "why don't we continue our discussion?"

Prof. Muhammed sits up and begins to speak with a deep clarity and intensity

Professor Muhammed: "Well, you have to first understand why my colleages in the field of International Studies find Al Anbar's reports to be so incredulous. The Kurds and Shiites have never supported the Baathists and there were massive celebrations when the old state of Iraq split in three after the second American-Iraqi war. Since that time, you see, these autonomous zones have appreciated a booming growth in economic prosperity and political freedom...the Kurds have even recently established a rudimentary democratic system that seemed, up to this point in time, to be one of the first wholly Muslim true democracies in the Middle East. Thousands of Peshmerga warriors have fought and died in their fight for independence."

Interviewer: "So you're saying that Al Anbar's reports fall at odds with the current beliefs of International Relations experts?"

Prof. Muhammed: "No, I'm saying that the reports fall at odds with the realities in Kurdistan. It is a blatant lie to claim that the Peshmerga would ever support Saddam or any Sunni Baathist dictator."

Interviewer: "Hmmm, so you feel that Al Anbar has been, as we say, 'stretching the truth' on this matter?"

Prof. Muhammed: "There is little truth for them to stretch, if they have not already demolished what truths existed. Al Anbar has had a long history of boasting beyond what it can provide...often fabricating reports of civilian losses in wars and planting misinformation at the feet of an all-too-willing media. You must understand that I have studied this field at great length and there is little to their claims that I could ever see truthfulness in. I hope that the rest of the international community will not be fooled by this belligerency."

Interviewer: "Indeed, now, if you will permit me to shift the topic slightly, I wonder if you could brief us on the matter of the Western Asian-Al Anbari non-agression pact that was signed a while back?"

Prof. Muhammed: "Surely. Al Anbar, several years back, began to make threats on the Western Asian borders after it had already come into conflict with several of Western Asia's allies...having kidnapped or detained foreign citizens who were in Al Anbari Iraq for some reason or another. When Al Anbar was faced with Western Asian forces, a last-minute agreement was made that bound both nations to non-agression status. This was extended to limiting direct support for violent internal opposition elements in each country and to forces intent upon causing material harm to the other nation."

Interviewer: "Well, wouldn't this seem to make any Western Asian support for the Kurds a violation of that agreement?"

Prof. Muhammed: "In spirit...well, it might be claimed that such support for the Peshmerga fighters is a violation of the spirit of the agreement, but since the agreement was made against violent forces that might threaten Al Anbar, it hardly applies to forces under Al Anbari assault...as is the case today. The Western Asian government has acknowledged Kurdistan as an independent fragment of the former Iraqi territory, but not of Al Anbar...anyways, while others may disagree, I feel that it is due time that Western Asia reconsider, or at least consider the revision of, that document. Al Anbar's claims are flimsy self-excusing lies."

Interviewer: "Strong words from a seasoned veteran of the field. Thank you very much, Professor Muhammed. Your presence has been a pleasure."

Prof. Muhammed: "Indeed, I thank you for the opportunity to speak my peace. Allah bless."

The Interviewer turns to face the camera and audience

Interviewer: "We are now about to be joined by Lt. Gen. Kemal Muggar, the Commanding Officer of the IDF's TurkCom and leader of Western Asian forces on the Kurdistani border."

The screen is split between the scene of the interviewer and a video feed of the Lieutenant General

Interviewer: "General Muggar, first of all, I'd like to thank you for agreeing to appear on this show, considering all of the pressure you are under at this time."

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "I thank you for your formalities, but I must admit that this appearance is not selfless in intent."

Interviewer: "Yes, I've heard that your officers have some images and video for us."

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "Yes, that is so."

Interviewer: "Okay, now, we have heard reports from several government officials, particularly members of the IDF general staff, who have reported that Al Anbar's claims of Peshmerga support are less than wholly factual."

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "Yes. Just before the official Al Anbari announcement, we were called by connections in the independent Kurdish government, who reported that the major political parties were under physical assault. The first call was silenced before I had the opportunity to speak with the Contact, who we have been unable to locate since that time. From the reports of the junior officers who received the call, this initial caller was likely one of those killed in the assault upon the Kurdish political meeting."

Interviewer: "So this reported strike is real?"

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "Yes. Soon after the first call became disconnected, we received a second call, this time asking for our immediate military intervention. The caller reported that a large group of Kurdish leaders, who had agreed to meet with representatives of Al Anbar to discuss a finalized border plan, were killed when their meeting house came under tank and artillery fire from Al Anbari forces. We requested the coordinates of the building and, while the caller could not give us the exact location, WARSSIN...the Western Asian Remote Sensing Satellite Intelligence Network...provided us with a detailed image of the destroyed structure, which was surrounded by Al Anbari armored forces and infantry."

A picture of the rubble remains of the building appears in the Interviewer's part of the screen, blocking him out. The ruins, still smoking with some spots on fire, can be seen surrounded by soldiers and Soviet-style tanks. The photo has clearly been "modified" to reduce some of the detail, but one of the tanks and parts of the building were left untouched, revealing an amazing quality and precision of image.

"We were able to scroll back to images recorded a little over 20 minutes before, where we could identify the arrival of a large number of Kurdish leaders from the north...and where we could see part of the Al Anbari assault."

The image of the destroyed building is replaced by a picture of the same building, with a time stamp noting that it is about 24 minutes older than the previous. A number of luxury cars can be seen in the parking lot and many men, dressed in a mix of Western business suits and traditional Kurdish garb, are entering the two-story building. A third picture is shown, taken only 12 minutes before the original picture, and the building can be clearly seen to be under assault, as portions of the structure smoke while the cars in the lot have been reduced to scrap by several artillery rounds. Dead men lay about on the fringes of the parking lot, apparently fallen Peshmerga soldiers.

"This set of imagery, combined with imagery that has revealed the Al Anbari push into Kurdistan, along with the Peshmerga response, has convinced us of the extreme gravity of this situation."

Interviewer (clearly a bit shaken by the photos): "Well...thank you, General, for your reaffirmation of the official claims of Western Asia. Is there anything more that you can tell us about the realities on the ground? Perhaps something of possible deployments of Western Asian forces?"

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "Yes. Firstly, I'd like to assure you that the Al Anbari claims are not, from what we've seen, factual. We estimate that the Al Anbari armored thrust into Kurdistan fell short after Kurdistan lost approximately 6% of its territory. Kurdish artillery and armored units began to respond to the Al Anbari thrust at that point and have apparently managed to keep the Al Anbari forces at bay, at least for now."

Interviewer: "That is not exactly what Al Anbar's minister of defense said today..."

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "No, "(Laughing)" I wouldn't expect him to admit such poor progress against the Kurds, which he has so often portrayed as weak fighters who stand behind other nations for support and comfort. He can't admit that his armored forces were stopped in their tracks, literally, and sometimes thrown right out of them! Here, look at this satellite imagery."

Another satellite image appears on the screen, this time from much farther out. It shows an Al Anbari tank battalion under fire, with more than four platoons of tanks already clearly smoking. The coordinates on the picture are highlighted.

"Now, you can see that there is already some trouble for them. Notice the coordinates in the upper left hand corner, if you will..."

Yet another picture comes up, this time a map that is centered on Kurdistan, the coordinates are marked with a red dot...which sits very close to the southern border of Kurdistan. After a few seconds the picture disappears.

"Now, would you like to tell me how far they've gone?"

Interviewer: "I think that you already have that part covered. Now, if you will allow me to ask, what is your policy towards Al Anbar in regards to the peace agreement that was signed?"

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "I think that Professor Muhammed covered that part very well indeed...is there another question that you have for me?"

Interviewer: "Umhmm...Ah, yes, I was wondering if you could reveal to us any details about a possible deployment of IDF Army Corps forces to Kurdistan?"

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "At this moment, our forces are only providing an enhanced level of border security along the Kurdistan-Western Asian and Al Anbar-Western Asian borders. They have not immediate orders to engage in any sort of combat except in self-defense. We have been seeing a lot of civilian refugees coming into the TurkCom sector, so we've called up the local National Guard and the Army Engineering Corps to build some temporary housing and process them. Aside from that, we wish the Peshmerga the best in the defense of their country and can assure them that the world will not allow them to be swallowed up."

Interviewer: "Thank you very much, Lt. Gen. Muggar. Thank you for coming on the program today, I'm afraid that that's all the time we have for now."

Lt. Gen. Muggar: "Yes, thank you for inviting me to speak to your show."

The Lieutenant General's image cuts out as the interviewer signs off.

KurdSat, official KDP Television Channel

The channel, which had continued to broadcast as normal, and had become more pro-Al Anbar as the days led up to the Iraqi forces entering Kurdistan and then calling for full support for the Iraqi forces, issuing orders to the people to remain calm and that a press conference with the PUK leader, Jalal Talabani, would take place within days.

The conference has finally materialized.

"We bring you to a conference held by the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan leaders, Mustafa Barazani and Jalal Talabani, respectively."

The video fades for a moment, before being replaced with a large conference room with reporters and the two leaders of the PUK, KDP, and several of their staffs.

"People of Kurdistan, reporters, and friends, the KDP and the PUK today holds this press conference to announce our agreement with Al Anbar and President Saddam Hussein to reunify Kurdistan with our brethern to the south." says Barazani.

"We have made an agreement with Al Anbar to end the bloodshed that has occured in Iraqi Kurdistan for years and years now. War after war has shed Kurdish blood and Arab blood. We can no longer allow this to continue," explains Talabani, "therefore, as of 0100 GMT, Monday the 2nd, Iraqi Kurdistan has reunited with Al Anbar."

"Peshmerga forces have been ordered to welcome Iraqi forces and support their security measures within Kurdistan. A joint task force of Iraqi and Peshmerga is now going on, against the Ansar al-Islam terrorists operating near the Persian border."

"This first operation is going as planned, showing how well our forces can work together. Our people is one. We are Iraqi, first and foremost before we are Kurdish."

"In exchange for our unity with our Iraqi brethern, we have been granted thirty six seats within the Al Anbar National Assembly, more than any other region within Al Anbar. We have been allowed to retain the Peshmerga as a defense force to cooperate with Iraqi forces operating within Kurdistan."

For over thirty five minutes, Talabani and Barazani describe the allowances that they have been given to them by Al Anbar. The conference ends soon after.

The Peshmerga leaders who have met with Lt. Gen.
