Corneliuan Naval Fleet observes the Foreign Fleet action.

"Sir it appears we have alot of nations watching this test."

"As long as they don't enter the forbidden zone it'll be ok."

"I know that Admiral but I don't like having all of these eyes on us. It makes me nervous not to mention it could be a security risk. I just hope some of these nations know that we are watching every move they make."

"Our orders Captain is to make sure they don't enter the forbidden zone. If they do, then we can use lethal force against them. We have subs underwater and planes in the air, if they want to try something, they can try but they won't succeed."

"Understood Admiral."

"Just be vigilent! That is all I ask."

"Roger Admiral."

With that, the naval fleet continues to be vigilent.

We thank Corneliu's fleet for attending this exciting testing phase of the Project.

Our own ships are in the area, to keep an eye on things.

It is our pleasure to help an ally in testing of this magnificent Torpedo that we helped to develope.

Our navy is deployed to assist incase of an accidental target on either an observer ship or that it strays off course. It is also deployed to make sure that the observers don't get to close to the testing site. We don't want any accidents here.

"Oh we can't have that now can we. Have Task Force 2 (3 cruisers,5 destroyers) intercept them.

Task Force 2, upon receiving the orders moves to intercept.

"This is Captain Sanders of the ARCS Tigersville to the Commander of the Exonerate ship. You are approaching waters that are currently sealed. If you do not peal off now, we'll be forced to fire."

When he finished, he turned to his XO. "Have them wait abit. If they don't slow down or peal off, have the firing crews to fire a shot across their bow. If that doesn't work, then fire another warning shot closer to the ship. The third shot, if necessary, Blow her engine."

"Right away sir."

The crew prepares to do there duty.

"Merchant vessel, stay clear away from the restricted zone, if you don't want a torpedo targeting you!" Captain Kerry of the BB Reign of Fire II ordered.

Commander Daniels stared in surprise at the speed of the torpedoes on his viewscreen. "101.5 knots! Amazing! These, my friends, are the fastest propeller-driven torpedoes in the world!"

But the test is not over yet! One of our own Seawolf-class subs will shoot one Spearfish and one MK 60 (to be named later), to see which one is really the faster torpedo.

Caffeinneburg
03-02-2004, 04:39
The Archduke of Caffeinneburg lounged on a deck chair as his personal luxury liner, the Hobbesian Leviathan, ploughed majestically through the ocean waves. He'd had a pretty good vacation so far, soaking up the sun and consuming a nigh-endless supply of blue drinks named after southeast Asian cities. Naturally, when the sun and surf failed to excite him any more, he took advantage of the other many diversions to be found aboard the ship: Elephant Polo (Deck 6B), Water Buzkashi (Deck 5I), and Fully-Automatic Biathalon (Deck 1I) were merely the three sports in which he had demonstrated his superiority over lesser mortals within the last twenty-four hours; when he tired of them, the ship had many more diversions to offer.

He briefly considered heading to the virtual-reality arcade for a round of PersianWars 2000, but decided he wasn't up to it today. His support staff of hot lawyer babes would no doubt want to play, too, and that heartless harridan Artemesia was a rampant teamkiller. The Archduke decided he'd have to get some new games installed at the first opportunity; maybe he could get a beta version of that Henry V Thousand vs. The CyberFrench game that TMoLCorp was working on. Of course, it was practically a foregone conclusion that the beta AI would manage to escape the confines of the game and attempt to take over the ship, turning it into a virtual deathtrap from which no one could hope to escape, but so far as the Archduke was concerned, that was just part of the fun. He was idly developing a plan which would allow him to heroically regain control of the ship with minimal casualties when Admiral Bazarov approached.

"Pardon me, Your Grace, but there's something you ought to know."

"You're very right, Admiral. Tell me, how many security droids are there on board the ship, and how easily could they be deactivated if they were taken over by a rogue artificial intelligence?"

Bazarov sighed. The Archduke asked questions like this every single time he started in with the blue drinks. "We don't have any security droids, sir. Just like we didn't have any cybernetic utahraptors last week, or demonically-possessed platypi the week before that."

The Archduke frowned. "Really? Where's the challenge in that? Well, I fully intend to give my inevitable electromagnetic nemesis a fighting chance. Order some security droids and have them flown out here at the very first opportunity!"

"Ahhh, right, sir, I'll get on that right away. In the meantime, I thought you'd like to know that we picked up some torps on sonar."

"I do say! Is someone firing at us? What cheek!"

"No, sir, we don't seem to have been the target," Bazarov replied. "There seem to be several other ships in the general vicinity, but we're not sure which one fired the blasted things."

"Really?" mused the Archduke. "You mean you don't have any idea at all who's doing this?"

Bazarov shook his head. "They're not entirely like anything we've seen before. We tracked them at 101.77 knots."

"Wait a second. . . is that fast or slow?"

"It's ridiculously fast. We're thinking Grimdale might have had a hand in it; it certainly fits their 'bigger, faster, more explosive' methodology."

The Archduke nodded sagely. "I knew that. I was just testing you. Well, let's not get too worked up about this yet. Let's just stay on the alert, and watch out for trouble."

"A truly marvelous plan, my lord," Bazarov replied. He saluted crisply and walked away, trying not to let the Archduke see how relieved he was. Throughout his career, he'd always given the correct answer whenever the Archduke tested him like that, but he lived in perpetual fear that one day he'd get one of the Archduke's questions wrong. He prayed with all his soul that that day would not come for a very long time.
03-02-2004, 05:36
"You know," mused the captain, "maybe we could just give them a little demonstration of what a super-caviating torpedo does."
"Heh. What do you have in mind?" asked the First Officer.
"Lets drop them one of ours... Take off the warhead, put a timer on it, and point it in the direction of one of the targets they're using." the captain replied.
"Lets do it."

12 minutes later, they dropped an experimental version of the new CAT-01, which was informally designated as the Obstinate Arrow, into the water. It gained its name when during a test firing, an unarmed torpedo hit its intended target, but kept going until it burst through its hull on the other side. The torpedo was floating, dead in the water...

OOC: Very nice post, Caffeineburg! :D

IC:
The Seawolf-class boat Typhoon readies for the next test. Her captain makes sure that the target freighter is lined up 5 miles (max range of a torpedo) away. The Spearfish is in Tube one, and the MK 60 is in Tube 2.

"Sonar, how's the firing solution."
"A-Ok, sir! We're ready to shoot."
"Very well. Torpedo room, fire tube one!" The order was carried out, and the Spearfish sped for the freighter.
"Fire tube two!" A second shudder was felt, as the as-yet-unnamed MK 60 was fired as well.
"Both fish running hot, straight, and normal!" Sonar reported.

On the surface, the Cougar's Pride sensed the fish. "Sir! Fish in the water!"
"Very well." Commander Daniels acknowledged. The timer began running as soon as the report was heard.

Underwater, an all-out race began for both torpedoes. While the Spearfish had a head start, and reached max speed first, the MK 60 sped past it, and left it in the dust, er, bubbles. The MK 60 impacted first, followed by the Spearfish, a second or two later. The Freighter blew up, and sank quickly.

Aboard the DD, Commander Daniels whistled and sportscaster-like, announced, "102 knots for the MK 60! That's a record, folks! Blows the Spearfish right out of the water! Now the tests are finished!"

The crew cheered again. Now all we had to do was suggest a name for this new torpedo.
03-02-2004, 05:52
The Voyeur was miles away when the CAT-01's timer reached zero and activated the torpedo. The torpedo had already been programmed to seek out one of the freighters used as targets. The rocket boosters were engaged, and it quickly sped up, spinning while it did so. It accelerated quickly, and peaked at 247.3 knots before it slammed into the freighter, punching a small hole through its hull. The torpedo was crushed beyond recognition, its internals smashed and contorted into a bundle of useless wires and circuits. Even far away, the Voyeur, which was loaded with the best surveilance equipment available, detected the impact.
"Heh, our farewell gift? Lets get out of here." said the captain as he grinned at the satisfaction of his nation's torpedo outperform the other one.

Al Amarja
03-02-2004, 09:27
Sunlight reflected off of whitecapped waves and dappled the flat grey steel sides of a ship as it sliced through the waves. Antennae and muzzles bristled from a superstructure of surpassing elegance, which cast a merciful shadow upon the head of a man standing on the open flying bridge of the new battleship Ain Jalut, newly delivered from the Molifodian builders to the Al Amarjan Navy. The accessories of the man - the white robe with black coat, the sky-blue keffiah as well as matching customized iPod and shoulder-slung grenade launcher would immediately identify him as His Majesty the Sultan of Al Amarja.

"Well, are we ready to try again?" he said, gesturing to Admiral Rashid ibn Mahmud, the head of the Al Amarjan Navy.

"Yes, Your Majesty, but I must caution you to-" he managed before being cut off by a curt gesture from the Sultan.

"Now now, we mustn't delay these trials. We paid enough for these ships, I want to be sure they are capable of what we require. Now... pull!"

A clay pigeon the size of a small cow was hurled from a rocket booster on the foward deck of the ship, spiraling into the sky on what more or less qualified as a straight line.

"Steady, steady... fire!"

The right barrel of the forward turret flared, sending a small vibration through the deckplates of the ship and smashing the clay target into a fine powder with a 1400-lb shell.

"Well done, gentlemen, well done," beamed the Sultan. "This ship pleases me greatly."

The Sultan turned to speak with some members of his entourage for a few moments before being interrupted by Admiral Rashid once more.

"Your Majesty, we are being hailed by a rather large vessel off our port bow. Her registry appears to be of Caffeinneburg, and there is a rather soggy and irate man hurling baked goods at us from the rear deck."

The Sultan looked mildly surprised. Having an irate Archduke throwing damp bagels at you is something not many people can face before their morning sekanjubin. "Please apologize to His Grace for our errant shot," he said, seeing his next summit with the admittedly eccentric Archduke being that much more bizzare, "and send him a parcel of our finest towels. The nice ones with the fringe. I love those."

"I will, Your Majesty." replied the admiral dutifully, scraping his forehead to the ground it what could only be described as the epitome of all kow-towing. "He has also just had his semaphore man signal us further. He would like to know if we've any security drones in stores and can spare a few for an idea he's just had."

The Sultan pressed his fingers to the bridge of his nose and sighed. "Has someone let His Grace into the Blue Curacao again? We're going to be spending weeks dealing with insane legislation. Steward, fetch me my medical bag. We're going to need a lot of aspirin."

The Ain Jalut sailed forward into the day, leaving white foam and soggy bagels floating in her wake.

"Holy, shit they just fired a shot off our bow!"
"Christ, he must be crazy. Continue course. Transmit the data we just gathered on ELF, explain our situation."
The captain picked up his comlink again.
"We repeat - we are a merchant vessel from the nation of Exonerate. These are international waters - you have no jurisdiction here. Our ship is considered to be the territory of the soverign nation of Exonerate - firing upon us constitutes a act of hostilities! If you continue, our government will lodge protests, and there will be a response! Cease firing!"
The captain turned to his communications officer.
"Transmit this to the surrounding area:

"This is the Tigersville! You have thirty seconds to stop now. Failure to comply will result in destruction."

"Captain they are transmitting something."

"What?"

"Sir it appears to be a mayday as well as data if we are reading this right."

"I knew that was no Merchant SHip. Well they better slow down or else. Fire a second shot but make it closer."

A second shot rings out and lands closer to the ship than the first one.

"Cougar's Pride to merchant vessel, stop, or prepare to be fire upon!" Was the order from the destroyer. It also increased to attack speed, and shot a 5' shell at the water near the 'merchant vessel'.

Meanwhile, a Viking ASW plane lifted off from one of the carriers in the area, and started tracking this boat chase. It buzzed past the freighter, engines screaming loudly. An F-14 also lifted off, and watched the scene, like it was from a COPs show. SEA COPs, looks like.

On the main deck of the M.N.S. Superiority , the President was pacing back and forth. At some point he had got in in his mind to dress up in full naval regalia. While the large blue feather in his hat made him look rather silly, it went well with the sash around his waist that held his sword in its jeweled scabbard.

Looking out across the horizon he could see a number of ship firing torpedoes. His earlier plan to lob massive depth charges at the ships had been foiled when he noticed the Sultan's vessel was practising battleship skeet shoot. In any event it was pleasing to see the ship perform so well.

It was at this point that Johnson wandered over to the President. As the chief aide, he was required to keep President sane at times and to simply let him be at others. Presently he was trying to compromise between the two. Between the Sultan's antics and the threat of an international incident, the President had been willing to lessen the destructive nature of his imagination in favour of a more humourous alternative.

For some reason every Molifodian military outpost was well stocked with a combination of pop rocks, and that green slime that can be found in children's toys. Not long ago, several heavy transport helicopters had delivered several tons of the goods.

"Sir, the catapults are loaded." Johnson spoke from behind the President, causing him to jump slightly.

"Ah, excellent." The President walked over to the console on the starboard side of the ship and picked up the radio. Giving it a good wind up (this was of course completely unnecessary, but the crank had been installed for show) he spoke into the microphone. "Fire one!"

With that, ten barrels went flying up into the air. The catapults had been aimed towards the nearest ship, but given the trajectory of the barrels, it was obvious that they were going to miss by a margin of at least a hundred meters. As the barrels sailed over the ship, they exploded. Pop rocks fell everywhere around the ship causing to snap and pop very loudly.

"Fire two!" Ten more barrels flew up into the air. The followed along the same course as the previous volley and at the same point also exploded. The non-toxic green slime covered the deck of the ship as well as the weapon turrets and command tower.

Struggling to pull himself off the floor and compose himself from a fit of laughter, the President grabbed the microphone once more.

"Excellent job. Now bring us within range for a saturation assault with the silly string cannons."

The Superiority was upon the ship in a moment and proceeded to douse the ship quite thoroughly. After the photographs were taken, the massive ship turned about and sailed off to the south east.

"Sir they are slowing down."

"They finally got the messege."

"Shall we search the ship?"

"Megaphone!"

when a mega phone was handed to him, he yelled. "I want all hands on deck. Be advised, if anything happens to the boarding party, your nation will suffer. I want no funny business when we board."

When he finished his speech, he turned to his intel officer.

"Well Jacob, we finally got them to stop."

"Yes sir. Now lets get on board."

They entered the launch and shuttled over to the Exonerate Ship. When they boarded, the captain of the Tigersville met the captain of the Exonerate ship.

"Captain, our subs reported a torpedo launch from your ship. That can be construed as an act of agression. I have no choice but to search your ship because of that incident. If we find that you didn't due it, we will of course recompsense you for your trouble. I do hope that this won't damage our diplomatic relations. So would you please be so kind as to show us your ship so our forces can look over your ship? But be advised, if you hamper their investigation, it won't go kindly. We want no trouble here."

"I want all hands on deck. Be advised, if anything happens to the boarding party, your nation will suffer. I want no funny business when we board."

"All hands, on deck." he called out. The boarding party came, armed with rifles. Their captain spoke.

"Firstly, our ship is a shipping vessel - we have no torpedo tubes. We detected several torpedos, but assumed they were yours, considering we had recieved a notice that your nations were testing new torpedos. Secondly, even if the hypothetical torpedo was launched by this ship, it was not directed towards your ships. Furthermore, our sonar detected no underwater explosion - don't you think a ship trying to sink one of your ships would remember to arm their torpedo?"

The captain of the Voyeur looked up and down the other captain. He looked quite young. Brash, arrogant, just like he once was.

"This ship is considered the soverign territory of Exonerate under international law. We are in international waters. You have fired shots at us. You tell me if our government will take to this kindly. If you want to see the ship, come." he said, with a wave of his hand.

OOC: I dropped the torpedo into water. This is a merchant ship. It is LOUD. There is no way you would've heard the torpedo being dropped. The only way you would've saw the torpedo being dropped was if you were running active sonar, and in that case, our ship would've known your presence.

Rising from the sea-bed, a lone Akula class reconnaisance sub-fighter begins to head away from the test zone when the pilot intercepts garbled radio-communications from a merchant vessel being stopped illegally in International Waters.

He encrypts the data gathered, quietly confident that his craft could outrun the torpedo, and that the McLeodian Tigerfish was far faster. Then, with a brief description of the situation, he releases a comms buoy, which rises swiftly to the surface, before sending the information in a short burst of scrambled information back to MAFCC NavInt.

Then, his mission complete, he steers the Akula closer to the Tigersville, the ships shape making it difficult to detect from a head on profile, and indeed from any profile but directly above or below.

On the Tigersville, sonar is detecting something unusual.

"Commander, I'm picking up what this computer is saying as magma displacement."

"Any sub reports on this?"

"Not a one yet sir."

"Keep on it."

Meanwhile, on the Sea Tiger, sonar was picking up the samething.

"Con, this is Sonar."

"Go ahead sonar."

"Sir, I'm picking up unusual activity. However, our computers are describing it as magma displacement."

"Your telling me this why Petty Officer?"

"Well sir, it is highly unusual. I have never picked up magma displacement in these waters before. And besides sir, it appears to occur above the crest, not below."

"Are you telling me we have a Red October in the area."

"Possibly sir. I advise that all ships be extremely careful. Escpecially with tensions brewing as they are on the surface."

"Understood. I'll send the messege out."

When the messege was sent, the Tigersville picked it up.

"Lt. I want you to track it Radio if you hear something from the Sea Tiger, notify me at once."

"Right away commander."

The captain led him down into the ship's cargo hold.... down winding stairs. Then he stopped and nudged open a door to see a vast cavernous room filled with computer terminals. At each computer sat an individual user, role playing in some sort of bizzare nation simulation.

These odd people really belived that this virtual world of nation simulating could teach them something about human nature. Fools. Each user was strangely transfixed with their screen and completely unaware of the reality around them. Narcissists, he muttered to himself, unholstering his sidearm. No one noticed him walking down one isle of the enormous computer room.

He quickly located the strange group's leader: a "head nerd" judging the thick glasses, greasy face & hair, and t-shirt with computer code on it. Squeezing off a few silenced rounds into the hypnotized cubby man took only a milisecond.

Grimly moving to the room's exit, feeling no remorse for these mindless drones wrapped up in an awful world of self delusion and grandeur, he holstered his weapon. Before closing the door, C-4 was planted. No great loss, he muttered. The ship burned and sank as he rowed away with a smirk on his face. Mission Accomplished.

Aboard Cougar's Pride...
"Sir! Little Cub's picking up a signature!" Sonar announced. Little Cub is the destroyer's helicopter.
"Great! Yankee Search the area! I want to know what's going on!" Lt. Commander Chris Conway, the XO of the Pride said. "Where is the contact?"
"Near the Tigersville (the real name of the Corneliu ship, McLeod03)!"
"Alert that ship! Get our subs in the area! Is that Viking still in the air?"
"Typhoon's on her way! and yes sir!"
"Very well! Arm torpedos! If that contact is hostile, we'll have to deal with it! Alert that Viking, too!"
"Yes, sir!"

The DD used it's active search sonar to spy out the contact. Ping! The sound waves returned a shape very close to the Corneliuan ship. A submarine!

[code:1:e0ad6d64c9]Encrypted: TIGERSVILLE! CONTACT NEAR YOU RPT CONTACT NEAR YOU![/code:1:e0ad6d64c9]

The sonar was also picked up by the Typhoon.
"Conn, sonar! Yankee search by the Pride. I also hear blade screws. Sounds very faint."
"Which sub is it?" Captain Corey Watkins asked.
"Don't know yet, sir. Wait...sounds like a minisub, but very hard to make sure."
"What? Minisub?"
"It's very faint, but I'm almost positive it's that class of sub."
"Damn. I hate spies, ok all hands, man battle stations torpedo! Torpedo room, load tubes one and two, but do not open outer doors!"
The situation is very tense now. What is that little sub planning now?

"Commander, we're picking up an urgent messege from CoreWorlds. They are saying we have a sub right near us."

"Shit, we did have a Red October. Prepare Depth Charges but do not fire them until ordered. I want all anti-torpedo artillery to prepare to fire. We know what type of tech they have but now we need to see how we'll stand up to it."

Klaxons sounded throughout the ship. The crew of the ship prepare for combat but not of the kind they thought of in the beginning.

"Radio room. I want a messege sent off to Command. Let them know what is going on here. Send them everything we have and what CoreWorlds has sent us."

"Right away sir."

"Now what sir?"

"Now we wait Lt. Com. I want you to notify our submarine. Tell them to head for the CoreWorlds ship and assist them."

"Right away sir."

With that, the ship prepares for combat as the submarine moves to its destination.

"Look, Captain. We declared these waters closed for a reason: Safety! We want to make sure that ships are not being targeted accidently during a torpedo test!!! You do realize that a torpedo blowing a hole in the hull will cause lots of problems. You're very lucky, Captain. Very lucky you didn't get hit while in the closed zone. Now let us continue the tour of this vessel, if you please."
"So your idea of safety is to shoot at ships in order to ensure their safety? I'll be talking to your superior officers - your nation has no authority to declare any part of international waters 'closed' for any reason. We have an important shipment to make, and you better not delay us too long."
Captain Giles lead the two other men around the ship.
"There's not much to see - this is the cargo hold... That's the bridge. There are obviously cranes used for loading and unloading. And that's all we have here."

As he goes about his business, he looked over at the Exonerate Captain again. "If we had to hit you, you would be in no position to report Captain because you would be dead. Corneliu - i would be well within my rights to ignore you for godmodding, but i haven't.

The Akula is a mini-sub designed for reconnaisance of sensitive military naval tests. It is highly expensive, and prone to failures. I wrote 'fighter' since whenever i am involved in a future tech, the Akula is used as a fighter, but since this is modern tech (debatable that the torpedo even works...), it is simply one of two covert mini subs. I will edit the post.
