9 PM, Friday
Inside the immense 140-story ATNN Broadcast Building in Tellerus, crews bustled about. The 9:00 news were about to go live. With a nod from the technical crew, the lead anchor, a pretty woman with brown hair, began the broadcast.
"Hello, and thank you for joining us on the Ancient Terran News Network. I'm Melissa Ariya..."
"And I'm Koushiro Iyagi. We have several news reports for you tonight. First, we're going downtown to report on protest occuring in fr-."
Koushiro stopped talking abruptly as a message popped up on his recessed flatscreen monitor. He paused and read the report, gulping a bit as he looked back up at the camera.
"Well, loyal viewers, it appears that we have a report just in!"
The words "Breaking News" flash up on the screen, followed by a computer animation of a large, flaming freighter. This is quickly replaced by Melissa again, although the words "Breaking News" remain at the bottom of the screen.
"Just minutes ago, reports were recieved indicating that a Terran freighter has suffered severe damage in international waters. It is unknown at the moment whether this is an accident, or deliberate. The vessel in question, according to the Terran coastguard, is the Fairweather Night, a massive Ponderous-class freighter. The Ponderous-class are easily the largest freighters operating out of Ancient Terra."
Melissa stopped speaking for a second, and Koushiro picked up where she left off.
"The Fairweather Night is operated by Terran-Gradenk Shipping, a massive shipping company jointly owned by Terran and Gradenk Investors. Terran-Gradenk Shipping was celebrating a 40% profit increase in this quarter."
Melissa nodded at Koushiro and started talking again.
"We've just recieved a report that the Terran Coastguard is responding to this incident. The location of Fairweather Night is estimated to be 350 miles of the western coast of Ancient Terra. An unknown number of Coastguard vessels have deployed from the naval base located at the edge of Lokanii Island, approximately 70 miles from the stricken vessel."
"Please stay tuned for further updates as information comes in."
All around Ancient Terra, people flocked to their TV sets as news of the tragedy spread.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, the first Terran Coastguard vessels have arrived on the scene of what could be the worst maritime disaster in Ancient Terran history. Earlier this evening, the Fairweather Night, a massive bulk freighter, was severely damaged. We now bring you live to the scene of the disaster, with Kai Okita."
The telltale scrambling from a satellite uplink is apparent as Kai appears on the screen, but it is still possible to make out the massive burning wreck of the Fairweather Night. Explosions light up the night sky like firecrackers, while the water is ablaze with lit oil.
"Thank you, Melissa. As you can see, it is quite hectic at the moment. No fewer than eight Terran Cyclone-class cutters have arrived at the scene, but the blazing wreck of Fairweather Night is pretty much preventing all rescue efforts. The oil burning on the surface has made it impossible for firefighting boats to get near the stricken freighter. An unclear number of survivors have been picked up by the Coastguard, however the vast majority of the crew is trapped inside the vessel."
The camera panned towards the Cyclone-class Cutters, each of them emblazoned with the Terran Coastguard's crest. The vessels were arrayed in an encirclement formation around the burning freighter, clearly searching for survivors. A helicopter buzzed overhead. The camera returned to Kai, who was standing on the deck of another Cyclone.
"I'm aboard the lead ship in the rescue taskforce, the cutter ATN Raymus. The commanding officer, Commodore Farr, should be joining us shortly. Rescue attempts have been further hampered by rough seas and a deluge of rain, brought by Hurricane Lordin as it passes by less than 150 km away. Until more information is available, back to you Melissa."
The screen switched back to Melissa and Koushiro, who immediately continued.
"Thank you, Kai. According to preliminary reports from the Terran Coastguard, who has been interviewing the few survivors, this was not an accident. One survivor reports hearing several muffled thumps before the vessel lurched wildly. The Coastguard is focusing their rescue attempts on the friehger's bridge, believing that the command crew will be able to shed some light on what happened. In addition, the Terran Navy has dispatched 4 Destroyers from the 2nd Defense Fleet. These vessels will rendevous with the Coastguard taskforce already on the scene, and assist with rescue operations."
Melissa picked up where Koushiro left off.
"The perpetrators of this act are not yet known, but some suspect the Core, a radical paramilitary group well known for their daring raid on an automotive complex 3 years ago. A massive, 4-nation effort smoked them out of the jungle and all members of the Core were proclaimed captured. This may not be the case. We will have more information soon."
(ooc: The Core is a radical antigovernment group that resides in Terra, and is pretty much the only one that has ever had any success. An earlier RP took place where they attacked an automotive factory, and Terran forces retaliated, along with several other nations' forces. We thought this was the end of them, but the Core is like a cockroach: You can damage it, but it won't stay dead.)
