:twisted: The Sultanate of Gnot, grand and powerful nation that it is, wishes it to be known that it is declaring open war upon the people of Hartfordshire. Too long has this snivelling commune existed near our borders, and we feel it is time to rid The Baenlands, and indeed the world, of this festering den of inequity. All those who stand in our way, shall be considered enemies of the greater good of the Sultanate of Gnot. :twisted:

The Free Land of Hartfordshire greatly resents being referred to as a commune and a den of inequity. We have always been a peace loving nation and we are truly horrified that Gnot has declared war upon our good nation. We urge The Sultanate of Gnot to cease in this foolish act, and we also call upon the greater Baenlands community to condemn this terrible attack on not just ourselves, but upon peace and love.

As United Nations Delegate in The Baenlands, Sentria condemns this hostile and unprovoked action against Hartfordshire by The Sultanate of Gnot. We ask Gnot to stand down from this act of violence, lest it triggers a regional war. We would also ask other nations from outside The Baenlands to respect the borders of our region, and not to interfere in this strickly local matter.

Tradehaven officially declares it's neutrality. That is not to say we condone the actions of Gnot. We condem the use of military force used within our Region. Our Arms Manufactures have henceforth only been granted export liscences with Heartfordshire and her allies.

We are also asking for a regional council to enforce sanctions, particularly in relation to weapons. Tradehaven currently has a total trade ban and would seek the formation of a multinational force to make such sanctions stand.

Our own military forces have been instructed to go onto 'Alert' Status for the near future. We warn that any wider war will force us to commit military force to restore balance and assist democratic/liberal forces.

We also stress that this is a regional dispute and any external forces should remain neutral and not intervene in any way.

An emergency meeting, late at night, in a secured classified location:

"The current situation is this: Gnot has invaded Heartfordshire. There appears to be no provocation behind this attack. We had no warning the Gnot forces were mobilising or had even increased their training regime. That means they might not have taken much territory as yet. However we do not know this for certain."

Said the anonomous aide, he continued uninterrupted.

"Koobeton has, not suprisingly, offered military assistance to Gnot. Thankfully Gnot has not taken up this offer as yet, however we are unsure of what Gnot will ask when, and if, pressed. The same applies to Lordsberg. This, gentlemen, does not look good."

Some figures around the room have the aide a reproachful look at his personal comment, but did not interrupt.

"Sentria is condeming the attack, but otherwise looks to be taking a similar
position to our own: neutrality. We have sent a telegram asking if they are interested in sanctions and other assistance that we are organising for Heartfordshire."

"Wekillfor Pleasure, as expected, is sending forces to intervene in both sides. Our intelligence doubts this will be of any major size, due to the current situation in that nations government. Besides, the two forces will probably, if anything, cancel each other out."

"Oldnewcastle is, again unsuprisingly, out to make a quick kreditt buy selling arms to both sides, if they get the chance. They will undoubtedly prove to be an obstical to our arms sanction proposal."

"Our own military is on 'Alert' status, and units report near 85% readiness after 24 hours." The aide finished and, knowing his place, quickly moved to the back of the room and sat down. The lights came up and the men around the table started to talk.

"So you are saying we had no warning, have no idea about the size, abilities or progression of the Gnot forces, have two other nations willing to commit forces against Heartfordshire and no active supporters?" First Minister Bignell asked of the room.

The chief of intelligence replied "Our assets were simply not tasked to enable us any optimum level of surveliance upon either Gnot or Heartfordshire. Heartfordshire has never been a concern on any national risk assesment and Gnot, well we have had considerable trouble infiltrating Gnot... but we have already dispatched official and unofficial assets to Heartfordshire and expect somthing from them soon. Our one agent within the Gnottian government has considerable difficulty supplying us with data on a timely basis, as our only agent we have to be exceptionally careful."

The defence minister spoke up "And impending war was not urgent enough to get to us in time? What is the use of 'assets' if they are of no use!"

The intelligence chief replied "We are currently evaluating our asset enabling. Stick to your tanks, General."

"Regardless of the deficient intelligence situation, which is being rectified, I need to know what happens if this becomes an open, regional war. Worst case scenario." First Minister asked.

The general looked into the Ministers eyes "Bad. Very bad. As it stands on one side will be Heartfordshire, assisted possibly by ourselves and Sentria. Stanging with Gnot are Lordsberg and Koobeton. At this point there are still some nations which are uncommited and may swing either side." Pulling up a tactical display the General gestured towards it...

"As you can see we have the advantage in manpower and arms production. Our economies are roughly equal, thanks to a better per capita performance than our own nations. Fortunatly populations bring us to parity. If this becomes a conventional war, attrition may be our best strategy, due to our larger numbers. Fortunatly no nation within the Beanlands has a nuclear program capable of an active bomb within 5 years."

The general continues "Of course we dont want attrition and other nations have yet to weigh in. Besides Sentria and, I might say, our own electorate may leave Heartfordshire high and dry. Our main adventage lies with supply. If we can contain Gnot and her allies, they have no industries capable of supporting a protracted intense conflict supply wise. Any Oldnewcastle arms shipments to Gnot will have to go through either Tradehaven or Baliol. Baliol may be sympathetic to our side."

The foreign minister speaks up "We need more nations to defend Heartfordshire. Outnumbered and surrounded, Gnot and her allies will listen to reason without any more bloodshed. A diplomatic cooalition should be formed to condem Gnot. If we don't then the war will widen, Heartfordshire will probably be occupied and thousands of our young citizens will..."

"Yes very sentimental" interrupts the First Minister "but a cooalition will almost certainly widen the war. We will worry about cooalitions and troops when, and if, we need to. As it stands we dont have near enough information to make decisions on. Maybe Heartfordshire has defeated Gnot already, well ok maybe not, but the situation may not be as dire as we think. We will send out diplomatic telegrams to all non-involved Baenland nations, ready our military, cancel all leave until further notice, and gather as much information as humanly possible." The minister specifically looks at the chief of intelligence for the last sentance.

"Any arguements? No? Well dismissed" The First Minister Concludes the meeting.

the Dictatorship of Rickinstine's neturial observers have arived at the conflicted area, and have set up base.
The main objective is to gather military intel. on all partys involved, and sell guns to all.

Vordis will stand beside Sentria in requesting that no outside nations take an interest in this conflict. This is a regional conflict, and it will be settled regionally.

The Sultanate of Gnot would like to enter into negotiations with Oldnewcastle for the purchase of arms.

It is with a heavy heart, that Hartfordshire concedes defeat in its war with Gnot. Our Capitol, Hartfordshire City, fell a short time ago. A few hours later, the concession treaty was signed by High Brother Rhet Hart, and handed to the Sultan of Gnot. As of this date, the Free Lands of Hartfordshire are part of the Sultanate of Gnot. In accordance with the treaty, all government access codes have been handed over to Gnot officials, and the former government of Hartfordshire is evacuating. We wish to thank all nations who supported us in this conflict, and regret any inconvenience we have caused you.

The Sultanate of Gnot, grand and powerful nation, wishes it to be known that it has defeated soundly, the pitiful nation of Hartfordshire. A treaty has been signed and all territory formerly belonging to Hartfordshire, now belongs to Gnot. All Hartfordshire officials have been escorted to the closest border (Eltsa), and have been issued specific orders that if they enter this territory, they will be shot on sight. All nations that have mobilised and sent troops to the region, are asked to leave immediately. All nations that supported our actions against Hartfordshire, we thank you.

Captain Olaf were shocked. The war was over before they had arrived. Still he wasent done yet. Many people were suffering in this country and he were here to help them. Medical aid and supplies. He wanted to help the poor people and so he did.

Tradehaven maintains it arms embargo against Gnot, Lordsberg and Koobeton. Furthermore it entends the embargo to include the illegal government of Heartfordshire. Food and aid will not be hindered.

Tradehaven along with Sentria, Eltsa and Baliol, are announcing, in light of the recent conflict, the formation of a new defensive group. The Baenland Defense Federation (BDF) has the following goals:

1. Defending againt aggression and blatent military adventures by rogue states.
2. Promoting peace, stability and mutual respect among peoples, to prevent future conflict.

While we currenmtly have four members, membership is open to all who want to promote the ideals espoused above. Military forces remain under control of respective nations, however we will coordinate actions using secure communication networks. Commitment of all members is to:

1. Providing facilities and bases to host mobilisation of greater BDF forces when intervention is needed in adjacent territories.
2. Providing Logistical, Intelligence and Military support to BDF actions.

In any conflict, the BDF expects it members to provide all support requested of it, including commiting troops. The scale of commitment is a decision that still resides within national governments.

The BDF is a non-aggressor alliance. When not in combat, BDF forces are identifiable by white armbands with national unit patches on them. We will defend any nation that is attacked and requests assistance. Any decision to intervene will be made by a simple majority of members. Any members engaging in aggressive, unsanctioned military actions will not be allowed to vote.

DO NOT TEST OUR RESOLVE.

The Commonwealth of Tradehaven Tradehaven maintains it arms embargo against Gnot, Lordsberg and Koobeton. Furthermore it entends the embargo to include the illegal government of Heartfordshire. Food and aid will not be hindered. A government in exhile has formed in the old Heartfordshire embassy which Tradehaven recognises as the true and legal government of Heartfordshire.

We, the true people of Hartfordshire, those that were not willing to capitulate to the tyranny of Gnot, are appalled that we are being classified in the same breath as Gnot. While we never respected the nations of The Baenlands that sat idly by and did nothing while Hartfordshire was overrun, we did not dream that they would stoop to this dispicable level. New Hartfordshire wishes to announce that it now considers the BDF, and all its lapdogs, our enemy, to be dealt with on the level that they deserve.

Our arms embargo was extened to the illegal government of the Oppressed Peoples of Heartfordshire. Not to the peoples of New Heartfordshire.

Government Building, Tradehaven City:

First Minister Bignell sat down exhausted after an all day intelligence committee meeting. Eight hours of sorting out what was wrong with the nations intelligence services. It was being addre.... The phone rang.

"Hey, its Abby, turn your TV on now!"

"But wha..."

"Just do it!"

From the tone in his secretaries voice, he scrambled for the remote and activeted the TV. The camera was zoomed in on some flames, but the worst sight the minister had ever saw in his life was one simple line of text, at the bottom of the screen:

"Breaking News: Tradehaven Harbour, multiple explosions rage out of control."

THE NEXT DAY

Over the past 12 hours the picture had become clear. The harbour was alight. Even the water was burning. Apparently terrorists had blown up two oil tankers on or near the harbour mouth, just as the tide would carry the oil into the rest of the harbour. Several chemical plants near the harbour were also hit, draining into the water. A cargo ship carrying fertiliser had rammed the central strut of the harbour bridge, rendering it unsafe.

It was the largest coordinated terrorist attack in history. Reports from Sentria, Eltsa, Oldnewcastle, Lordsberg, Koobeton, Letharg and Gnot also had similar indications. The sheer scale was stagering. The electorate was calling for blood.

Military volunteer enrollments were up 3200%, the nation had sold out of flags and left-wing radio hosts are calling for the people responsible to be bombed back to the stone age.

The government released a statement:

"In response to recent actions a state of war now exists between Tradehaven and New Heartfordshire. Under our authority, Tradehaven is voting FOR B.D.F. intervention. The government in exhile for Heartfordshire maintains it's neutrality but condems the terrorist attacks upon nations that supported us against Gnot in the war."

Radioactive refuse drifted through the landscape. The Wilkinson-Wells Uranium mine no longer existed. A major city of 2m was being evacuated of all company directors, upper level managers and all who could afford to buy a seat being auctioned off on evacacuation transports.

"The houses and government offices of Oldnewcastle are releasing this statement under an exclusive deal contracted with BNN, you total news source."

"Oldnewcastle was last nigh struck at several major uranium production faculities, which are mostly based around the city of Gildrange. An exclusion and quarintine zone has been set up around trhe province, although minor health issues will no doubt affect the entire Baenlands for decades to come. Of course 'volunteers' will continue to mine and contribute to national income, however this attack highlights that a new strategy regarding security needs to be developed."

"Following this development, Oldnewcastle has the following announcements:

1. We will immediatly be joining the BDF.
2. We will mobilise our forces and vote YES for BDF intervention in New Heartfordshire, to eliminate terroirist elements and bases.
3. We can no longer ignore regional stability, as this impairs prosperity of all peoples, and their freedom to buy our products, for example the refereshing Mega-Cola, the soft drink of choice for winning people. We must build peace, because the cost is nothing compared to the cost of not doing so.

The First Minister of Baliol steps forward to the dais, eyes slightly red but looking stern.

"My fellow Baenlanders, today our region has been rocked by terrible acts of violence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims of this travesty. As i speak, aid efforts are underway to prevent more damage from being caused. Having said this however, we in Baliol feel that it is our duty to maintain peace in this time. We admit that action must be taken at this time, but hasty this action must not be. From what we can gather from communications with the attacked nations, there is absolutely no evidence that New Hartfordshire was behind these attacks. The claims of a few rdical nations in the region that they were involved, are at this point unfounded and completely without merit. We urge the right thinking nations of The Baenlands, not to wage a war based on the declarations of wicked peoples. I can only hope that sanity will prevail and peace will return to our region. Thankyou, and godbless."

In a statement released later, it was announced that Balio, would provide humanitarian aid to the attacked nations. They would however, not be declaring war on New Hartfordshire unless concrete intelligence came to light, pointing the blame directly at the ruling government of New Hartfordshire.

Spared from the recent attacks on other natuions, the Empire quickly tripled security around all key facilites.

Pika, emperor of the 12 Skulls publicly condemned the cowardly attacks and vowed to support any movement aganist the terrorists. The Empire's intellegence agenices believe that New Hartfordshire is behind these attacks.

"Sire, a message form the BDF inviting us to join." Pika accepted the messgae and read it carefully.

"Very well. Send a message to the BDF. We believe them to be a honourable organisation and we will join them. Death to our enemies!"

We join Baliol in calling for calm. There is no evidence that New Hartfordshire was involved and calling for war aganist them is premature.

Even if New Hartfordshire was invovled more violence is not the answer. Violence begets violence

We invite all Nations to sit around a table and try to find a peaceful solution to the crisis.

We welcome the Empire of 12 Skulls into the BDF and look forward to building a peaceful region together.

We are skeptical about the Neutrals ability to resolve this issue around the table, but will try this method first - because WE are reasonable and peace loving, unlike 'certain' nations. If you can get a resolution to our satisfaction, all the better.

Do you know how many people died? How long it will take to repair the environmental catastrophe in our Harbour? We cannot let these things go unresponded to!

Tradehaven has been concerned for some time about the direction this region is taking, with liberal and democratic ideals pushed aside in favor of war-mongering and terrorism. We are doing all we can to meet this threat, we feel that, despite our want for somthing else, the only way to obtain peace in our time is to fight for it against 'certain' nations.

As such, under our aliance terms, we are placing defensive forward units in all nations bordering non-BDF territory for rapid response to crisis situations.

"People of 12 Skulls. In recent weeks several of our neighbouring countries have been attacked by cowardly terrorists! Millions of innocent people were hurt or killed.

There can be no other cultprits than the rogue state of Newhartfordshire. Not only that but our intellegence agaenices believe that the Newhatfordshirians may have WMDs.

Because of this, our Emperor, along with the BDF have decided to take military action in an effort to defend not only our borders, but those of our allies. Our troops are currently being deployed and our security has been tripled.

Some countries will think to protest this action. To those countries I say there is no fence to sit on. You are either with us, or aganist us! Effective immedatly all trade has been ceased with Netural and Baliol until they see sense and send troops to aid us. Also all peoples from those countries in our fair land are require to report to the authorites within 78hrs, where they will be sent back to their home countries. After 78hrs, any forgeinor from those lands will be treated as a spy.

Your emperor asks for your support in this. Arm your self. Report to the recruiting offices. Should you see people acting strangely, report them. It is up to all of us to protect our land.

Squadron leader Smithson held his squad in place over friendly airspace, waiting for the 'go' signal.

Captain Davies, 12 Skulls Special Ops, surveyed his men next to him on a hidden grassy knoll. The equiptment was ready, all that was left was the confirmation signal.

The mercenary leader checked his watch, scanned the horizon and climbed back into the lead attack helicopter. This contract would make him rich or kill him. He mostly prefered the first.

The Emperor, High Lord and First Minister looked at each other. "Go" they said simultainiously.

The fighter and heli squadrons approached New Heartfordshires Air Defenses...

Captain Davies gave the order and three air burst infantry launched missiles streaked towards the power grid transmission centre. The missiles exploded in mid air and realesed a rain of small copper wire and tubes, into the middle of the complex electrical distribution system.

Air Defense Marshal Verdan saw the incomming fighters, "Launch Fighters and Fire SAM's!" he shouted with a grin on his face. The whole complex blacked out before the private could execuite the order.

Squadron leader Smithson led his fighter squadron over the inert defenses and launched a full salvo against the opposition's airbases, disabling their runways.

Attack helicopters moves over the border and began an assault against all SAM sites stationed in the border region.

Veran was stunned. Emergency power had come online within two minutes, but that was all that was needed. The whole area that was his responsibility had been neutralised and couldn't repel an aerial force of any size. "Call Command, we need reinforcements!".

Squadron leader Smithson sent the signal "Area is clear for operation 'aerial cleanup', lets get those terrorist bastards and go home!"

...Minutes later every designated terrorist target in the area had been eliminated.

The First Minister released a statement:
"Today the BDF has struck a desicive blow for peace in our region. In conjunction with two foreign governments, Tradehaven forces have completed an aerial campaign to eliminate the terrorist scurge within New Heartfordshire. We report no losses and no civillian casualties. We advise our population to be alert but not alarmed, the remaining terrorist cells already in our nation may seek revenge, but none of their comrades will be joining them in the future."

"We bear the government of New Heartfordshire no ill will, and again invite them to join the brotherhood of nations and accept our aid. Our quarrel is not with you, but criminal elements that have infiltrated your nation. We also warn any foreign government not to get involved. This dispute, as far as Tradehaven is concerned, has been resolved. We also warn New Heartfordshire not to retaliate, we are prepared but dont want war."
