OOC: Sorry about the lack of pictures, the pic hosting site is down.
IC: A small black SUV pulls up to the gates of what appears to be a tunnel leading into a mountain.
After the guards check each person's pass, the SUV slowly crawls through the tunnel and stops at the end. The Chairman is led out and is quickly ushered into the nearby elevator. When the elevator reaches Sublevel 20, the doors open and the Chairman is greeted by the facility's top scientist.
'Good morning, Mr. Chairman. My name is Dr. Chester Mason. Please come right this way'
'Doctor, What is so important?'
'Remember a few months ago we requested 5 fusion reactors, 1 space freighter, and 40 sq ft of metal?'
'Yes, I remember. Go on.'
'The reactors were not for the spacecraft we said we were building. They were for this research facility. The freighter was not used for reverse engineering. It was used to transport 500 colonists to a planet we have designated as P3X-719. The 40 sq ft of metal was for a project which we will show you later. Now we will show you what was so important that we called you over here for.'
Then Dr. Mason opens the door to Research Lab 1.
'Jesus Christ, what on earth is that?'
'That, sir, is the prototype of our stargate.'
'Stargate? What does it do?'
'It is a universal teleportation device. It uses a system of 7 glyphs. Each glyph represents a constellation. To find a destination within any 3 dimensional space, we need 6 points to determine an exact location. The seventh glyph, called the point of origin, is used to chart the course. Once the 7th glyph in put into the computer, an unstable energy vortex emerges from the gate, incinerating everything in its wake. Once the vortex is gone and the event horizon is established, outbound travel may commence.'
'Does it work?'
'Yesterday, we did a test to see whether or not it would work. The test was a success.'
'Don't you need another one for it to work?'
'That's where the freighter and colonists come in. We sent them to P3X-719 to set up the gate on that planet. We sent them 2 stargates: the prototype and the Mark I.'
'The Mark I?'
'Yes, that is to be the production model which will be sold to other nations. We want to set up a network of gates to bring planets together to trade, make treatys, and other things.'
'I see. How much did all this cost?'
Well, since 15% of the national budget goes to research and all the profits from the storefront do the same, oh....I would say about.....$500 billion.'
'$500 billion!!! Good God, this had better be worth it.'
'It will be. And now I will show you our pride and joy: The Mark I.'
The two of them approach a large sliding door and as it rolls away the Chairman gets the first glimpse of the Mark I stargate.
'How large is this?'
'It's diameter is 22 ft. It's weight is 32 Tons.'
'What are the specs on this one?'
'This one is a massive, circular ring with an inner track of 39 symbols representing star constellations. One side of the gate holds nine equally-spaced, V-shaped locking mechanisms, or "chevrons," capable of locking at least seven constellations in place via a freely-spinning inner track. It also has an iris, which is kind of like a camera shutter, that is pure titanium. It is there to prevent any unauthorized intruders from coming through the gate. It is less than three micrometers from the event horizon, therefore matter can't fully reintegrate. So when someone comes through without authorization, they hit the iris like a bug on a windshield.'
'Unbelievable!!!! To get back to my original question, why am I here?'
'First, If we told you about this project, you would never believe us. Second, we would be honored if you would witness the first dialout of the Mark I.'
'When is it?'
'I can't be sure, but probably in a few days.'
'Ok, thats fine I will stay here until then.'
'In the meantime, I will give you a tour of the rest of the facility.'
