PDG Proving Ground Actions (CLOSED RP)

24-01-2004, 20:32
Welcome to the Proving grounds! This thread has been created to mark the movements of troops participating in the Protectorate of Darien The Great's Military Proving Grounds.

This is a CLOSED RP; only forces previously commited will be allowed to RP. All others will be ignored (no offense; just hard to keep track.)

Teams are as follows:

Team ALPHA:
 The Forces of Barentsburg
 The Forces of the Knights of Falmir
 The forces of No-Dachi Yo
 Elves Security Forces (Awaiting confirmation)
 The DIRT Team of Remboland(Awaiting Confirmation)
 The Forces of Tal-Kerillion (Awaiting Confirmation)
 The Forces of Sambizie (awaiting Confirmation)

Team BRAVO:
 Myself (great teams, eh? :D )

Initial Rules:
 A Map of the Proving Grounds has been provided: web.njit.edu/~dsa4/NS
 Activity on the Proving Grounds will be held for approximately 2-3 months (2-3 IRL weeks, maybe more if things go well.)
 You will be assigned to either A or B team. At the start of this exercise, You will start at either an A or B base; no other areas will be claimed at the beginning.
 Bases will be capable of launching, arming, refuelling, and repairing aircraft.
 Bases CAN BE CAPTURED.
 FARPs (Forward Arming and Refuelling Points, marked on the map) are areas suitable for ammo/fuel dumps. These areas are where ground vehicles and helicopters can take on supplies. NOTE: Because of their small size and remoteness, airplanes CANNOT land at FARPs.

The Initial Situation:

A unified force of Team ALPHA has come to liberate a city held by BRAVO. As of late, a small guard unit of 100 men is in the city, interspersed throughout sector (1,1) until reinforcements can arrive from either BRAVO bases in Sector (0,2) or (2,2). ALPHA has set up bases within (0,0) and (2,0).

BRAVO Team has begun the exercise by moving His Fourth Armored Division into Sector (1,2), hoping to secure the roads leading to the City.

Fourth Armored Division consists of:

6,000 foot soldiers
25 M1A2 MBT's
25 M2A2 IFV's
10 GU-13 SAM's
Artillery suport provided by 10 MLRS and 10 PzH2000 SPH, attatched to the unit.

The 6 patrolling MiGs are diverted to back up the advancing forces, 2 more are scrambled, it is estemated however that these 8 planes will not arrive until around 8-10 minuites after the enemy planes. This is radioed in, and the Leflasys AA prepare themselves and the Black sharks move closer to the ground to make it harder for the 4th Ground Attack Squadron.

OOC: 100 KM sounds perfect.

IC:

In the command bunker, a jumpy lieutennant turned to General Dowd. "Sir, the 5th and 4th Squadrons have Confirmed targets. Weapons have been released..... Enemy Contacts! Migs! A full squadron, sir! They're vectored towards 2,1! One ZF-26 has been painted by enemy radar. They have been 'shot down,' sir."

Dowd Gritted his teeth. " Have all fighters make one more pass on the ground forces. All Ground attack fighters are to break off; scramble the F16's on Alert 5, full AMRAAM Loadout!" He then looked at his Army Commanders. "Colonel Harrison, deply the ninth Recon division. If the airstrikes weren't enough and they encounter heavy resistance, pull back, and secure the FARP at 1,2."

"Understood, sir." the colonel turned to the comms station.

"Status on the 4th Armored?"

General Dowd looked at Colonel Hasgood, Command of SpecOps in the Army. "Colonel, I need you to secure the FARP at 1,2. If you do, we have a good position to push into the city and outward from there. Can it be done?"

"It will be by the end of the night, sir."
"Excellent." He saw the Colonel turn to a comms station. He in turn looked at BGN Lawley. "General, deploy a detachment of the 7th Armored to the FARP. After it is secured, have them swing south into 2,1 and help secure the FARP there. Understood?"
"Perfectly."
Dowd then Picked up the phone to the southern base. "Colonel McCleed, I want a bomber strike on the Southern ALPHA base. Runway cratering loadout."

Inside the lead APC

-"We've got missiles locked and coming in!"
-"All units take evasive action, send the stingers in from the Leflasys"

*Vehicles scramble to get away from thier previous course, the Leflasys fire 2 stingers at the low flying bombers*

*the enemy missiles impact*

-"We have lost one Leflasys entirely and an AMX is destroyed, but it seems the crew is safe"
-"Damn, get the men out, take up positions, a hit on the APC from the air will wipe us out; where the hell are those MiGs!!!"

*the men jump out of the 2 APCs to take up dispersed poitions, the 4 AMX crewmen join them, the remaining Leflasys releases its second stinger*

In the air

-"Right, within range, everyone got a lock?"
-"Confirmed..."
-"One missile on my command, then try and get on their tail...FIRE...!"

Dowd Rubbed his eyes. He had hoped his nap would put him in better spirits.
He would be Wrong.

As the door opened, commanders were scrambling for his attention. "Gentlemen! One at a time!... Status of the FARP in 1,2?
"Secured Sir. Seventh Division det is in range of the southernmost FARP now."

"Air Attack on the Southern Alpha Base?"
"Not Looking good, sir. We've lost 3 F-16's to Enemy Fighters, but we're putting up a good fight. Lancers will be in range of ALPHA South Base momentarily...."

Inside Halo 4, Lead B1B Lancer
"Flight, check in."
"Two."
"Three."
"One."
"ETA: 45 Seconds. Prepare to --"
"SAM Launch! Shark bears 087 for 10! Two is Defensive! Repeat --!"
Halo 2's Radar signature faded from the screen. Halo 4 Lead swore. That was one of the Runway Craterers. "Command from Halo 4, two is down, repeat: Two is down. Halo is over Gondola. Rain has been released!"
Buzzing filled Halo Lead's helmet. "Halo 4 Engaged and Defensive! Evading Incoming Shark!"
Halo 4 would join Halo 2.

In the dogfight over 2,1
"Flasher 250 is going down repeat, two-five is --"
"I've got Tone! Fox Three!"
"Runner Eight-three, Fox Two!"
"Gold two-six-six maneuvering in! Engaged Offen--!"
"Hunter six three six to all pilots! Bug out, repeat: BUG OUT! Halo has Released Rain on Gondola! Fall back to bases, our mission is over! Buster to Nearest base!"

Back in the command center
"Dammit!" Dowd Was thoroughly displeased. The Satellite Imagery said it all. Three of the four bombers released their ordinance over the base, but at the loss of two-fifths of his staged bomber force. Worse still, He could see the transponder signals of 5 Fighters had faded from view. Casualty counts of ALPHA were yet to come in; that would follow in the hours to come.
"Status of 2,1's FARP?"

Sector 2,1 in the northern forested area
Major Geffen peered through his binoculars. ALPHA seemed to have not noticed their placement. The men were out of the Bradley's; the M2A3's Had locks on all the vehicles outside. "Flasher 6 Actual to all units: Go-code: Litterbug."
30 TOW Missiles streaked out of the green forest, into the perimiter of the FARP. 90 Assaulters charged forward.

The Sambizie Security Force has been deployed along with the forward assut team. They depart Alpha Base within Sector 0,0. The two Black Hawk, escorted by 4 Hokum and 2 "Littlebirds", Fly under cover of the "coalition" dogfight at an alt. of 100 ft.. The helos skirt across sector 2,1, where they are offloaded on the far side of the rivers, at the mountain range in ,(SE) 2,2. A base camp has been estiblished with communications and a 1 mile, 180 degree perimeter has been secured.

An Elite team is moving East through the mountains on horseback...

As the darkness falls upon the mountains, the Elite group of "Special Operations Mountain Rangers", (SMR), have been in this position before. Even arriving on horseback, provides them the advantage of faster travel through the mountains and out of range of armour.

The mountains provide cover as 2 Hokum conduct foward Recon for the SMR. A temporary Coalition LZ in SE 2,2 has been estiblished>>*transmits encrypted co-ordinates to Alpha Commanders*<<. The LZ will be "restricted" after 0430 and "re-established" at 0030 tomorrow.

OOC: DG I'm assuming since you were tied up in a dogfight in 2,2..that my "party" made it safely. However, if you would like to contest their presence, I'll RP a "counter".

Within the City, Northwestern end...
Staff Sergeant Lazlow was exhausted. He had gotten little sleep on the ride into the City; He was never comfortable in the tin box that was his GU-13. He was near the vehicle, lighting his cigarette when he thought he heard his stomach grumble. Realizing it wasn't him, he looked skyward.
There, high up, but unmistakably there, was a Predator UAV. He ran to his vehicle. "Troy!" he shouted, trying to get his gunner's attention,"Troy! Contact North! Call it in to HQ!"
Specialist Troy Hangler was already wheeling the turret into firing range. He waited for the solid hummmmm of the SAM's seeker head. He closed his eyes and squeezed the trigger. "Sky sword 5 launching at UAV. We are under observation and possible attack."
"Hangler! Multiple contacts on radar! Helicopters! Get on the radio!"
In minutes, the sky was illuminated by flashes of SA-13's streaking towards the incoming helicopters from Elves Security Forces.

City Outskirts, main NW road...
Colonel Hagery didn't like the situation at all. "Have the men pull back to the City. In the morning, we'll push them back with air support. It's too late to fight. Have the Artillery battalions give us smoke cover; the MLRS units will use our Smart-rockets."
"understood, sir," his aide replied.

In the command center...
"Colonel McCleed, prepare an Air Tasking Order for Tomorrow. I want a CAP up on the city by 0545 today, as well as some sorties to help out the 4th."

---------------------------------
Summary:
 Rather than engage, the 4th Armored Division has used the cover of darkness to pull back for the night. Artillery strikes have been ordered; smoke to cover the retreat, and the MLRS battalion is launching smart-rocket anti-armor bomblet dispensers.

 Just before dark, the UAV's are spotted, along with Elves' helicopters. They have been engaged by the 10 GU-13 AAA batteries assigned to the 4th AD

 A Combat Air Patrol will be stationed over the City as of 0545 on 25 JAN of 8 F-16's with an AMRAAM Loadout. A-10s will take off at 0945 and be on station until 1200 hours.

 Ground Forces will begin Jump-off at 1030 hours on 25 JAN, supported by an artillery strike and 2-ship B1B Bombing run, commencing at 1000 hours. Lancers will be carrying a CBU (Cluster Bomb Unit) mix, as well as standard Mk-82's

OOC: Sambizie: Your party has made it safely; my fighters were too tied up. However, will you accept that they were spotted by returning fighters, but due to a lack of munitions could not engage your forces and that your position was relayed?

OOC:Yes that's acceptable, as they would have been spotted on radar as were you. You would have noted "LZ" co-ordinates also, But the group has covered signifigant ground and may have estiblished a new one. Be kinda hard to spot a few soldiers at night

-"BS001 to base, we need fuel but we have enemy activity, we suggest an air attack."
-"Confirmed, they are on thier way, you four come back for refuelling"

*at the base 4 Black Sharks take off and head to 2,1*

MiGs over 2,1

-"Bam, got hi... damn, im locked on... cant shake i..."
-"Ive got one coming in... evasive action taken...God, that was close"
-"Right boys, they are heading back, we need fuel, lets go"

On the ground in 2,1

-"INCOMING!"

*the Lancer bombs impact*

-"Whats the damage?"
-"We have lost an APC and an AMX tank, with two dead and 5 wounded, we need to get out of here, there is a large number of enemy moving towards us on the ground."
-"Right, radio in, get us a Chinook, we will fall back from the FARP..."
-"Sir, enemy movements in the forrest up ahead"
-"GET DOWN!!"

*The roar of TOW rockets, and crash of impact*

-"We have lost another AMX, have two men wounded, and have no Leflasys left"
-"Get the wounded into the APC as best you can and fall back, get as far back as possible, the Chinook is on its way, and the Black Sharks will deal with them."

*As they pull back 2 snipers take shots at the advancing troops and the remaining AMX tank is able to send two shells into the forrest where the enemy vehicles are positioned.*

The command base

-"Whats the damage from the enemy bombing run?"
-"Well, we have lost a T72 and a MiG got damaged by the blasts, its fixable, but it will be out of order for a month or so (1 RL week)

Near to the FARP in 2,1

The Chinook moves in to land, firing its machine guns wildly at the advancing troops as they must be nearly out of range. The 2 snipers continue to target the troops as the wounded are put onto the helicopter, followed by the active troops, the snipers fire off one more round each and jump into the Chinook as it moves off, still firing the machine guns. The AMX throws another 105mm shell, hopefully, towards the forrest. The tank and remaining APC drive as fast as they can towards base.

As the Chinook moves off 4 Black Shark attack 'copters whizz overhead firing thier 30mm cannons at the troops below, then, tuning thier attention to the vehicles, throw 8 guided AS missiles towards them, adding a non guided rocket each for good measure. As they pass overhead they rattle off their cannons at enemy units below.

(sorry i just got back from work)

In 2.1 (following the road from the base in 2.0)

The Knights of Falmirs Infantry moved out transported by theire M-809 5-TON Trucks. Not a single man needed to walk. 2 Full Battalions started to dig in at about 30 km from the city.

They were In four Threnches 500 Man per thrench and 1km inbetween each thrench. And About 5-10 Km behind were the heavily fortified artillery positions. Falmir trusted heavily on Artillery.
(I have modified bravehearts, they can fire over 40 KM).

A Infantry Battalion had been dug in around the artillery position and one of the tank hunter battalions had been posted in the forward threnches (500 men) and both anti air battalions had been posted along both positions.
The rest were held in reserve at the base.

18 MiG-29 were launched to fly air superiority missions over the defense perimiter area.

The fight for 2,1

"GO! MOVE UP! Suppresing fire on the right! Get that MG Moving!"
Orders spewed from Major Geffen almost as fast as the rattle of the 25mm Bushmaster cannons on the Bradleys. The attack was initially successful; the Ground forces of ALPHA had retreated, and he noted the smoking wreck of a few vehicles. Streaks of missles --
--- headed the wrong way. He got on the radio. "Flasher 6 actual to all Wheeler: Incoming fire! retreat to the forest until I call for you." he looked at his men. "CHOPPERS! TAKE COVER!"

As the smoke cleared, he took note of his losses. 8 men dead, 4 wounded one Bradley totally destroyed, and 3 were damaged, but still usable. Geffen redeployed his forces in a V along either side of the valley.
Apaches and Comanches had landed on the FARP and were taking arms when the radio call came in. "Incoming aircraft. scramble!"

Summary:
12 men lost
1 bradley lost
2 Apache, 4 Comanches take to the skies to recieve No-Dachi's helos.

Northwestern outskirts of the City
Lieutennant Dunlop was having a bad day. The UAV Spc. Hangler had shot down was currently lodged in the turret of his M1A2. as far as he could tell, the tank could still function, it just couldn't swivel its turret. He would have to sit out the coming battle. Overhead, the silent hum of PDG F-16's could be heard overhead. The smell of battle was in the air. He had to admit, despite the fact that it was all an exercise, and that everyone would go home after this, the thrill-- and perhaps the fear --was still in the air. He looked at his watch. No doubt Colonel Hagery was doing the same.

"0924. half hour 'till we start this attack. It must go through," Thought the colonel. "We need to take some steam out of these guys. But we're so new to this. We've never been in battle. No matter. The men are trained. We can have this day."

In the command center...
General Dowd looked over the morning reports:
:!: 987th Engineers successfully created a dirt road leading to the South FARP, branching off from the small 20km of road in (NE) 2,1. Food and Fuel is on the way.
:!: the remainder of the 7th Armored has been committed. They will be moving north into the city. taking position in the SE outskirts.

:!: Remainder of 7th Armored:
- 25 M1A2 MBT's
- 10 M2A3 APC's
- 10 MLRS
- 10 PzH 2000 SPH
- 10 GU-13 Mobile SAM Platforms
- 10 M6 Linebacker Mobile SAM platforms
- 10 Leflasys Mobile SAM Platforms
- 8,000 ground troops, transported by remainder of 100 MB-1's

:!: ESF forces have retreated, but were replaced by the Knights of Falmir. They are currently heavily fortifying their positions, and anti-tank units have been spotted.

:!: An enemy helicopter managed to sneak into 2,2 and deployed an unknown composition of forces. BRAVO base South has been put on high alert.

Dowd brooded. "Falmir has committed, but so have I. I will have to drive them out in the coming days, keep them contained. I can only hope my men can do this."
He looked at his watch. 0959. The battle for the North was about to begin.
25-01-2004, 16:07
The screech of rockets filled the morning sky; Copperhead artillery pieces were thundering over head; the 4 A-10s were being guided by Forward Air Controllers; and Lancers had flown in overhead, releasing their payload on Falmir's men. The barrage would last for a full half-hour.

Summary:
 My artillery battalions have opened up; 10 PzH 2000's and 10 MLRS are firing!

 4 A-10s with a full anti-infantry loadout have begun their attacks, each with:

-96 rockets (anti-personnel flechette rounds loaded)

(Im to slow to write im gonna die before I get to act :P)

------On the ground--------

The Falmir Artillery Fired at the Enemy troops, the sound of the initial burst thunderd the surrounding lands. The 150 Braveheart howitzers fired a burst in unison. In about 10 seconds 450 rounds had been fired upon the enemy. No one silenced the guns of The Knights of Falmir. After the initial burst the artillery kept up a sustained fire of about 300 shells a minute.

The Enemy artillery hade hit the fortified lines of Falmir causing substantial damage, it was estimated that the first thrench would need to be abandond due to damage. Also some 100 men had been injured or killed, the 1st Medical Platoon got into action swiftly in theire armourd ambulance vehicles.

-------In the sky--------

The 18 Air Superiority MiG's intercepted the enemy aircraft as soon as they showed up on scope. Also the 200 CV 9040 locked theire guns on the aircraft should they happen to break trough.
(well im not sure about how fast those planes are, but since my planes were in the air it shouldnt be to hard to intercept 6 aircraft when there are 18 of us).

------Towards No-Dachi Yo-----

9 Su-35 had been dispatched to cover the No-Dachi Yo forces, the dropped theire full payload on the enemy forces in a quick hit and run airstrike upon which they swiftly returned to base.

NOTE: Falmir, correction, there are 14 craft in the skies. Check my earlier posts; I have an 8-ship F-16 CAP over there. The Lancers will be retreating, and the A-10's aren't very nimble, but I'm gambling on my F-16's to do the job. :)

The northern battlefield
The Artillery display was amazing. Plumes of red chalk exploded everywhere, the effects of simulated explosives going off. It drew some of the reality away, and many of the soldiers of the PDG were glad. They pitied the men on the recieving end....
until they realized they were under attack as well. shouts of "INCOMING!" filled the air. Colonel Hagery radioed to his men:"MOVE FORWARD! GET OUT OF THE COVERS AND DRIVE THEM BACK!"

Over the Northern battlefield
"Basher six-two-six has lock. All Basher, pick your targets at max range...and.... FOX THREE!"
"Hammer one-six has been hit! Right wing is gone, repeat: GONE, I am buster to base!"
"Hammer eight-six is engaged offensive... Fox two!"
"Basher four-five is hit! Engine's damaged, I'm buster to base!"

In the command bunker....
Dowd was making another gamble, but the payoff might be worth it. Using the dirt road, he ordered the remaining AAA units not attatched to either the 7th and 4th Armored into the FARP. Then, as the near-30 ALPHA fighters sped to the South FARP's aid, They would be met by a steel curtain. He was still less than happy. His bomber force was almost gone. He needed to give them more protection, but ALPHA's air resources were undboubtedly superior. This is why the air war had to be decided on the ground.

(ooc: ahh yes, sorry missed that but its still 2 vs 1 and i have alot of AA flak on the ground aswell so i believe theres a sligh advantage in my favour still...
Aslo im shelling 300 rounds per minute on your forces :P thats quite a lot :P Did I get you right? your attacking my threnches?)

-------The Ground-------

The first thrench had been abandoned but the second still had over 500 men guarding it. Heavy machine guns and morters and taken up pre fire positions and stood ready. Javeline missile launchers were on standby along with several other all purpose and antitank missiles. Any armoured veichles or helicopters who strayed to close would pay dearly.

The last of the Artillery was called in to fend of the assault, 100 MLRS launched a full barrage at the incomming invaders.

(yes I have a lot of artillery, 250 pieces).

The Defenders were taking casualties from the enemy artillery but they could be nowhere as hard as what theire oponents were recieving. Now whit the medical platoons quickly getting the wounded out of harms way. Casualties had been cut to roughly 80 or so. Now 180 men were taken outof action with another 600 or so regrouping.

-----The Sky----
-The Bomber force is heading home lets fend of these fighters now, AIR SUPREMACY FOR FALMIR!

A hooray was heard over the com as the MiG's begun to engage in 2 on 1 dogfights. Even though they had the numerical advantage the oposition werent exactly pushovers.

-Shit im hit! ejecting!

The Squadron leader tok a hit in the engine and ejected, unfortunately he landed in front of the Falmir threnches.

The 200 AA-flak units held theire fire for now.

OOC: well I assumed the full barrage of 100 MLRS would somewhat reduce the numbers, also theres 500 only in the first thrench 2 more behind it.

As the attacking forces aproached, the Engineers battalion moved outof hiding, the area infront of the first threcnh(the one we abandoned) was however clear of mines, but the 1 Km run to the next thrench was full of anti personell mines, also 30 HMG and somewhat 50 Mortars stood ready to fire at the attackers, closely supported by the 100 MLRS. The Defenders were in excellent positions and simply awaited the enemy attack.

Behind the threnches the 600 men from the first thrench had managed to regroup somewhat and were being prepared to reinforce the third lin incase the second line fell, since the first line was already empty.

--------The Air---------

The fighters still enjoyed superior numbers, with only 2 MiG's lost.
Also as the first wave of Su-35's had returned the base were now sending out the second wave. The General always wanted atleast one squadron in reserve. Shortly 9 Su-35 were to join in the already lethal dog fight.

Dowd was gritting his teeth. Those artillery batteries were proving to be quite a hassle for him. A voice broke him out of his reverie. It was Lieutennant Shales. "Sir, the Air drop was successful. We lost one C17 to enemy fire, but our fighters kept the triple-a busy. We've landed 500 men and 8 HMMWV's behind Falmir's MLR (Main Line of Resistance). They are engaging the Artillery battalions now."
Dowd sighed. Some good news for once. "And what of the 4th Armored?"
"Well, sir, those artillery batteries were fierce; they're keeping the pressure up, but at this point, all our Bradleys are either out of the exercise, or will be out for some time. We've lost about 800 men total, and the PzH 2000s have pulled back; their barrels are on the verge of overheating. The MLRS battery is still firing strong, with supplies being brought in from the MB-1's."
"And the air situation?"
"There's a lot of activity over the skies right now. We've lost 2 F-16s, and the last three A-10's are damaged to the point that they will be out of action for some time. "
Damn. no air support for my boys on the ground. "The Air drop is complete, get the fighters to base. I'm sure they're low on fuel at this point. What else?"
"well, sir, Reports from the southern FARP are sketchy. They're saying they need support, and fast."
"tell them we're tied up. the 7th Armored will be there ASAP,but I want to make sure we've pushed the Northern front back a bit. I need some --"
"Sir! Enemies have broken past the 4th Armored and are moving into the City!"

Luckily for Falmir There were 2000 dug in Men guarding the Artillery Detatchments, spotting the paratroopers was not really difficult. And the three dug in battallions all sat waiting on the 500 man group that had dropped behind them. They realised now however that they would have very few reserves to commit if anything went wrong. However a Full battalion stood ready to act incase it was nessecary, the artillery positions had to be held.

(Well well, guess you missed that one? also there were flak cannons, so i dont know how far away you dropped your paratroopers, but some might have been shot if it was close by?)

-------In the Air-------

The Air Battle raged on, now with another squadron of 9 Su-35 air superiority fighters engaging the enemy, they would harry and pursue only so far as theire own lines stretched.
26-01-2004, 00:27
OOC:Barentsburg, I assume you're diverting your KC-130 to that sector, and that the planes aren't landing at the FARP, correct?

Falmir.... You sneaky bastage. :D I'd like to note though that you did place your artillery defense forces in front of the arty placements, so that might force you to draw them out of your fortified positions....

IC:

The 204'th set up quickly; Flak and injuries meant that only 451 men safely landed. The men quickly began taking to the mountains; It was a choice of defense or attack. Dowd wanted infantry lining the valley. Any retreating forces would have to get past them first. When the fouth and 204th were united, he would push forward.
The 4th however, was facing stiff resistance. Falmir's retreat was a long time coming the way the battle was going. Colonel Hagery wanted one more push forward before displacing and calling it a night. He knew the war of attrition was wearing heavily on BRAVO'S air forces. Tomorrow would mean even less support than today. another 100 men were counted dead. The men were still putting up quite a fight, but fatigue was in their eyes, in the sweat lining their faces. Tomorrow would be harder than this. But it had to be done. He knew he could fall back to the City, but that was going to be his last option. City fighting would mark the endgame, and that was still quite far off.

Summary:
:!: The 204th is digging defensive positions into the mountains of 0,0.

The Elites had been on the move through the night, suddenly they could hear the crashes of artillery fire hitting a few kilometers away, they knew the target was the more southern wing of Bravo forces in that area, and they were close to their target. It was up ahead, orders were given and the men moved to take up positions.

...

They had thier orders and thier targets; the attack began, 6 well hidden snipers took shots at any exposed infantry, concentrating on the gunners in Humvees, then, 2 LAW rockets shot forward towards two anti-air vehicles, followed by 2 RPG's at the Humvees. At this the 2 PKM machine guns whirred up and 24 grenades from the launchers on thier rifles were sent in the enemy's direction. The LAW and RPG launchers reloaded as the guns began to fire...

The Second Thrench had fallen now there were only 2 left, hoever the remnants of the first and second had regrouped, and now a full 1000 held the third threnched backed by 50 MLRS, also at hand they had 50 Mortars 50 HMG and 100 Light HMG. And the path to the third threnched was full of mines. They would hold of the assault here, the area infront of the was a killing zone. As all the soldiers fired from pre targeted positions from cover. Mortar shells mines and HMG fire thunderd along with the constant rocket barrages from 50 of theire MRLS.

There were now only 1 full battalion guarding the threcnhes with remnants of a second. But the 2 Tank Hunter battalions were still present awaiting enemy armour. The AA battalains withdrew behind the last thrench. The Engineers battalions were also withdrawing along with the medical platoons.

Geffen was truly in a bad position. True, he was dug in, but his men were taking a beating. Already 30 men were dead. The battle had been 10 minutes old before his radio crackled to life. "Tomahawk 5 to Flasher five-five, Air support is on station. Requesting targets."
"Thank god!" Geffen sighed. he spoke to his Forward Air Controler. "I need anti-personnel sweeps directly west of our position. There's an arty unit here somewhere southwest of me. No sign of fighters in the sky. But scouts reported SAMs."
The FAC spoke to the helos. "Flasher five-five to all tomahawk: Weapons are free. Begin assault, grid ref. six-six-zero-four. target the personnel. look for green smoke."
"Tomahawk 5 confirms. green smoke."
"secondary target: grid ref. five-nine-nine-eight. Target arty attacking our position. Be advised, possible ground sharks on station. Pop and duck tactics recommended."
"understood Flasher five-five. Beginning runs. Your smoke, please?"
"On the way!"
Taking his Grenade launcher, the FAC loaded a smoke grenade, Aimed, and squeezed the trigger. The grenade landed a little bit ahead of the attacking men; the wind drew it over them, covering No-Dachi's men in a blanket of green. The Hum of 3 Comanches filled the air, followed by the hiss of rocket fire.
The other three helicopters headed south, using the mountain range for cover. sidestepping out, they cleared it, smack dab in front of the artillery piece. "Tomahawk four has lock.... Hellfire away!"
"Two....Hellfire Away!"
"Four, Three, We're being painted! Break!"
The warning was too late. A Leflaysys had the Tomahawk 4 in its sights; the remaining two shoved their collectives forward and ran, dropping flares in their wake.
 0956 Hours
The battle was dying down, especially now that the 205th had landed. The mountainous terrain was rough on the men; of the 500, 30 were injured on landing. The remaining men set up defensive positions at the mouth of the valley leading into 2,1. TOWs were set up, and the 7th Armored Detachment swung southward, lining up with the 205th.

Northern MLR
Hagery had to give Falmir's men credit; they were a hell of a good fighting force. All of his morning assaults had been repulsed; his total casualties were numbering in the 1200's. That damn artillery is killing us. We need to take it out if we want any hope of taking some heat off of us. if we can do it, we have earned our break, and can retreat to the city. but until then... "Keep the pressure on them, boys! We have to --"
Hagery grunted, clutched his chest. His hand came away red. goddamn snipers.
He was "dead."

In the following hours, the men of the 4th Armored fell into disarray and retreated, their leader no longer leading. Hagery's replacement, Lt Col Unger, was a far more conservative leader. He had hoped more artillery would be available, but the loss of bombers, as well as the overwheming steel rain Falmir's men were showering left him concerned. He called for a full retreat; the 204th was left to fend for itself.

The 4th pulled back 30 km, and dug in. Attack was, for Unger, no longer an option, until more artillery could be brought to bear.

In the command center
Dowd was infuriated. His push had failed, and 400+ men would now pay the price for his zeal. He could only hope that the 204th could hold out until Falmir's line could be broken.

in the Western MLR
The special forces teams of ESF were very aggressive. the 7th Armored had taken over 200 casualties in just the opening hours of conflict. But they came at high cost. ESF's men were surely feeling the stress of being attacked by armored units; and the 50 snipers were doing quite a number on the few who failed to keep their head tucked away.

(um... Darien, just thought dont know how you fight but. Youve pushed back to lines of heavily fortified men, with alot of heavy weaponry and 250 artillery pieces. Thats several thousands of rounds. Ive lost a thousand men in your frontal assault and you only.... 1200? in the best cases casualti ratings go like 1-20 or so when fighting in these conditions. Just though you should really considder how though it is to run your men in an open field whit 200 pices of artillery, mines and hundreds of men are shooting at you. well just pointing it out)

-----on the ground-----

The line held and this new line was stronger than the other two, the artillery kept pounding the enemy forces, and the Munitions and maintainance battalions were kept busy. The line held... for now.

Our snipers found some abondened buildings and started searching for the snipers and enemy infatrymen. The artilary continued to bombard the city with firing every hour. So far noone had tried to take the artilary positions.2 of the snipers had enemy snipers in thier crossheirs. As they waited for 5 minutes for conformation it wasnt thiers, now they pulled the trigger.

Dowd was groggy from his morning exercises. He looked over status reports for the past two days:

:!: 4th armored is still taking heavy artillery fire
 Casualty count up to 2200
 4 M1A2 MBT's damaged beyond repair

:!: Skies over 0,0 and 1,2 are controled by ALPHA

:!: The 204th PIR is trapped in the mountains of 0,0; they are fighting well, but casualties have gone beyond 200 men.

:!: 7th Armored is having a hard time fighting off the ESF forces
 Snipers, SpecOps teams have killed 254 men
 saboteurs have damaged:
- 1 Leflaysys
- 2 M1A2's

:!: The 7th Armored Detachment, in addition to the 205th PIR, have been taking air strikes on and off:
 30 dead
 Bradleys have gone into hiding until airspace is clear.

Dowd pondered, and finally picked up the phone. He knew it was a gamble, one that could cost him the air war, but at this point, he was out of options.
"Dowd to Command: Set an ATO for the day. All Fighters are to take to the skies; mission: Air supremacy over 0,0 and 1,2. I have a plan."

In the city, Western MLR:
Snipers were having a field day in the city. the rubble and few tall buildings provided excellent cover. One by one, the sharpshooters were taking careful aim. 4 of BRAVO's snipers were killed; the remaining 46 were determined to make ALPHA's men pay for every inch they made into the city, picking off repair crews, tank commanders foolish enough to unbutton their turrets, and patrols trying to sneak forward.
Col Halleck, CO of the 7th, got orders to fold his AAA as well as his MLRS and PzH 2000s into the 4th. He sent them on their way through the city. He didn't like the idea of city fighting; he needed the open space to maneuver his men. He was glad that ESF was at the same disadvantage as he.

 Jets from both BRAVO bases are winding up. They will be airborne in an hour:

All 20 fighters launched an AIM-120 AMRAAM missle at the swarm of Gripens. As the craft broke off, a concentrated volley of SAM missles streaked out from the city... In a matter of 2 minutes, 50 missles were airborne, all flying towards the JAS-9's. The Fighters closed in, and the SAMs were preparing a second volley. They would have to launch before the fighters were engaged in ACM. The crews hustled. As the fighters clashed, another 22 missles took to the skies.

"Eagle four engaged and offensive! I've got bogeys on my tail! Eagle 5, where are you?!"

Dowd was starting to worry. the air battle over 0,0 wasn't looking too promising, but radar on the situation was down for now; no status reports were coming in on casualties.

Down in the south FARP, supplies were starting to run low. now they were being beaten upon by heavy aircraft fire. All he had in the sector were helicopters, and the 204th in the north was still taking a serious beating. Not even cargo helicopters could pick the men out of the predicament they were in...
...a predicament you caused....
he forced himself to think about the present. there would be time to brood later. He closed his eyes, thought for a minute, and began shooting off orders.

"Yessir, they are winchester and busterin' to base now."

"Axe lead to Hammer Lead, we have enemy Helos headed back to base. prepare to engage ground forces. We'll go up the gut; sneak around back."

"Hammer lead copies, breaking now." The 10 Apaches peeled to the left, once again using the mountains for cover. The 5 Comanches proceeeded north, and hovered at the fork in the main road leading to the FARP. They waited.
The Apaches flew south, along the southern cluster of mountains, around the 7th ADD. 5 miles from ALPHA's Troop concentration, Hammer lead called out. "Axe lead, proceed with your run. Good luck."

"Axe copies. you too." The stealth choppers pulled their collectives and sidestepped into the valley. Axe lead briefly felt like he was in the mouth of a giant beast, with the moutains on either side of him. He called to his men. "Axe flight, run up the gun, taking out anything on the road. take evasives when you're painted and bug out. GO!" The 5 noses tilted forward and charged at ALPHA's men.
A modern cavalry charge.
"Lead, this is 4, I'm being painted, dropping flares!"

"Lead, we're all being painted!"
Good. Hammer, you better be there... "Axe to hammer - we're painted, GO! All Axes: BREAK OFF!" The Comanches pulled up, rose out over the mountains, and ducked behind them, hoping the terrain would prevent the missles from hitting. Axe Four didn't terrain mask in time; a missle caught his fuselage. His chopper was gone.

The 10 Apaches gunned their collectives and rose out of the mountians. They followed the vapor trails of the freshly-launched SAMS. They raked the enemy line with rockets, Hellfires and 20mm cannon.

The remaining aircraft fled back to the BRAVO bases. Of the 20 that went in, 3 made it out. The consolation was that the skies over 0,0 were clear...for now.
Dowd was still displeased with the figures. His gamble, on the whole, was not successful. He was down to three fighters, and a handful of bombers. His helos were his greatest asset now. He would need a push... a good, hard one, but it would be a long time coming. He turned to the comms lieutennant. "Send a message out to Colonel Halleck. Inform him that he needs to push the Elves back. we need a flanking assault on the Northern MLR. What's taking Halleck so long to push The ESF backward?"
"I don't know, sir," the young placeholder said. "I'll be sure to include that as part of the message."

The western MLR

Colonel Halleck was perplexed. The small size of the ESF unit attacking him made it difficult to take them out; he on the other had had been taking casualties steadily throughout the engagement. Already he had lost 577 men total, and was pushed backwards a good 500 yards into the city. He could only hope that the forces involved were wearing soon. The communique from Dowd seemed urgent, and he knew his counterpart in the 4th had taken a serious beating. The SAMs used in the air assault had returned, and he was back to his normal strength. He needed to think, and think fast.
It was time for a blitz.
He ordered an artillery strike with every available battery to fire on the enemy positions. He spoke to Lt. Col. Unger, and all the artillery from the 7th and 4th was brought to bear. The missles streaked out into the sky; the 2000's thundered equally. Halleck clenched his jaw. He would push these men back. He had to.

2,1
The casualties were mounting, but the lines were holding. the 205th was down to about 320 men; the 7th had lost another 2 APC's. A Leflaysys was able to spot the incoming fighters, warned the helicopters. They fled as the SAM's provided cover. Geffen was exhausted, but the fight was still on.
