What's the minimum wage for "free" workers? They're generally a better bargain than slaves. Work a slave to death, there goes your investment. Bondservants are the way to go; Work them to death just before their terms are up, & you avoid having to give them the contracted land. Slaves are more trouble than they're worth, unless they're really cheap & fit.
