As you know, New American uses the far side of the moon (Selene region) as a source of resources and a nuclear testing site. After one of our tests with a new bomb which has the same power output as the Sun over a similiar period of time, we discovered something quite weird in the crater.
From analysis of the regolith strata, we determined this object had been placed on the moon around 12 million years ago. After analyzing it's chemical compostion with passive instruments, we determined that this thing was an alien artifact. It was roughly spherical, with some swelling toward the ends. Anyway, the funny thing was that it sent a radio transmission...in the general direction of the Oort Cloud.
Anyway, the New American space forces (we're spacefarers, we live in space colonies in earth orbit) has never ventured beyond Pluto. However, we are currently conducting a large scale expedition to the Oort Cloud. Seeing as our current propulsion technology allows us to travel at around a tenth or so the speed of light (you wouldn't believe what fusion engines will do when hybrided with ion drives!) we should be there quite soon.
Anyway, we have managed to get some data off the artifact, and it is now on the market for $2,000,000,000 a gigabyte.
