Uranium available, large quantities

14-01-2004, 12:19
The people of the Logarchy are intensely interested in mining; we are a young nation, and still growing. We have discovered significant deposits of uranium in our country, along with other metals. However, our economy is not growing fast enough for our tastes, nor is it growing fast enough to arm our burgeoning military. Therefore, we would like to propose a trade: A continuing and stable supply of uranium for builing nuclear weapons or nuclear power plants, in exchange for a complete outfitting of our nation's soldiers.

Be advised, our military is extremely large, to the point where it is becoming impossible to manage and now even more impossible to equip. As outlined in our country's charter, a full third of our citizens must be members of the military; they have no choice. Therefore, we are looking at an extremely large number of troops, troops who are, at present, mostly armed with small arms and such rifles as our arms manufacturing industry can supply. We have no tanks. We have no aircraft. We have scant few cobbled-together anti-aircraft guns. We have somewhat armored civilian ships as troop transports; our navy consists of armed cargo ships. As of today, our military was 26 million strong, counting child trainees, supply personnel, military agriculturalists (enlisted farmers and ranchers, pretty much) , MPs, instructors, and reduced duty (old) personnel. Though certainly not all of these personnel will be armed, we intend to plan for growth, at least until we can get our economy into a sufficiently powerful range to support our own arms.

Please post the arms you are capable of providing (note: this must be a complete air/sea/land armaments solution) and the amount of uranium you require. If our contract is to be a renewable contract, please post the amount of uranium you require per annum. We will perform the calculations and inform you as to whether we can provide the amount you seek. We also have a limited cash budget if we need to negotiate.

(OOC) I think you'd find 1/3 of the population would make up basically everyone who isn't a) a young child, b) a senile old man/crone or c) an invalid. Please note I am not trying to make problems, I am trying to point out a mistake that plenty of people have made in the past, before somebody else does.

OOC: I'm aware of how problematic a military of a size one third of the population can be. I know it hasn't really been tried before on Earth, except in Sparta and a few other highly militarized states.

So far, population-wise, I've managed to get it to work by making enrollment in the military egalitarian- both men and women alike are in it. We figure that's where a lot of little Logarchians come from. It also works because old men and women are part of the military, as well as something a bit more than a third of all of the children (we lose some in training, you understand).

These people are trained from birth to serve the Logarchy. No ifs, ands, or buts. They are, in effect, brainwashed to follow Reason and Enlightenment.

There are still difficulties, of course. How are they fed? How does a highly militarized economy handle this massive population of soldiers? The answer is, after having done the GDP and tax calculations: It's hard, but doable. The problem is, I have no money left to supply them with actual weapons. That was why I started this thread.

I don't want to pick up a reputation as a godmoder- I'm seriously trying to work out this nation concept. I'm keeping books, everything. It's tough, though.

(OOC) I think you'll find even Sparta wasn't more than about 10% at any given time. I'm not hot on the exact stats but it isn't high and often exagerated.

So basically what happens is 1/3 of people are military at birth and stay that way until they die? Heck it probably is doable, provided you don't want to produce anything much apart from soldiers.
Well if you're looking for tanks going cheap Dyelli Beyby is selling of a vast fleet of old Russian tanks while at the same time looking for depleted uranium to use as armour for newer designs.
