Fuel Alternative Project: Plant Oils

Zvarinograd
12-01-2004, 11:33
The United Communist States of Zvarinograd has begun research on an alternative to petroleum in the manufacture of high octane fuels for aircraft due to the fact that the growing and already massive airforce of the country requires an unimaginable amount of petroleum.

Plant oils consist of 14 to 18 hydrocarbons. Kerosene (a group of alkanes and aromatics, some of which used for aircraft fuel), consists of 10 to 18 hydrocarbons. Though, there is a problem with using plant oils as aircraft fuel outright, the molecular structure of either does not match. However, there is a possible solution. In the refining of petroleum into various products, there is a process called alkylation which rearranges the molecular structure of hydrocarbons. In alkylation, low molecular weight compounds, such as propylene and butylene, are mixed in the presence of a catalyst such as hydrofluoric acid or sulfuric acid (a by-product from removing impurities from many oil products). The products of alkylation are high octane hydrocarbons, more commonly referred to as aircraft fuel.

Unfortunately, the agriculture of the United Communist States of Zvarinograd has always been restricted to small greenhouses. Now, our researchers have begun development of a genetically modified coconut plant which will produce a large amount of coconut oil, a perfect base for the alkylation process. Finding the correct process for the alkylation of coconut oil would not pose too much of a problem granted our technicians’ experience in oil refining gained from isolating the amidoxime fanction from polyethylene required for our earlier Seawater Uranium Extraction project.

OOC:
This is based upon layman’s knowledge of the oil refining process. Anyone care to correct any mistakes or comment?

OOC: seems good.

After all if a bunch of isloated rebels can produce cocnut oil of a quaility that allows petrol engines to run better when using it then i would imagine a scientifically inclided nation such as yours could make progress.

Anyway we might be interested in supporting this, after all most of our entire military machine runs on alcohol (ie we got the woodchipping and automobile manufacturing as 2 of our main businesses to start with so i extrapolated from there).

Sir KnowsAlot quickly scanned through the news item, that had been handed to him by Alfered Mankind, the minister for transportation and energy.

Is this real!, and if so, WHY have we not started to support this project yet!.

Alfred started to stutter

With a snarl, Sir KnowsAlot scanned through his personal "Slush Fund" regarding his budget, Ah HAH, he cried.

We wish to support your studies, and development as far as we can allow. Unfortunately, i am only able to offer you 500 billion dollars (US) for this product, and also we will allow you to use our highly advanced petroleum processing and refining plants.
We have wired this money to your swiss bank account, reference ID #AWM439010.
We hope that you will find this injection of funds benefical to your project.

Truthfully enough, I can't say thanks enough to the world. It's from research projects that my country was recognized in the international community. Science built my military, my economy and my diplomacy.

Good concept. In reality you can get used cooking oil and turn it into a diesel fuel for use in transport like cars and boats. It's all possible, we need more research! It's called biodiesel.

You can get natural methane (i.e. pig's fart) and use that as an energy source. It's called biogas. :D

Seriously though, what I just said is true.

Lately I have been looking for ecologically sound alternatives, botany came first into my mind, actually.

Well biogas is cool as you can make it nice and easily out of all your rubbish and sewage.

Hence why we use it as a back up to our massive energy harnessing projects (wind farms, wave generators, hydro dams) of course being situated in the middle of the north atlantic means we have wind, rain and waves aplenty...)

Your research interests us and we would be most interested in forming some sort of joint collaborative effort. Our research institutes lead the way in recycling technology and are now diversifying into biogas. They may have some related experience in this area.

This has also been forwarded to our Military Research Division and please expect an answer from that division shortly.

Crookfur: The United Communist States of Zvarinograd is situated in the Ostrova-Zemlya Russian Federation claimed islands, it's a fairly wide archipelago. The near-arctic climate is what puts my country's agriculture in small greenhouses. However, it's a good thing for genetically modified crops, they can't damage the environment outside plus they'd help me even more than it would help third world countries.

Please wait for my IC response for a bit. I'm a little busy.

Your help would be welcome in our research, our researchers will be willing to exchange methodologies with you. As for your military division, this research will most definately give aircraft a cheaper, more efficient fuel from reusable sources, reducing costs of maintaining a large airforce and subverting the growing lack of petroleum.

Jason Sheppard poured the first drum from test (a) into the car, and stepped back, while making a special signal. The driver turned the key, and shoved his foot to the floor.

The car spluttered, semi-started, and stopped

Suddenly Jason's mother comes running out "Have you seen my coconut oil soup?"

With a sigh, the scientific team started the experiment again.

After many more hours of research regarding the soup, it was eventually worked out that Jason's mother's soup was so incredibly potent that it was able create semi-hydrogen bomb explosions.

While experimenting the Team has discovered the following:
1) Jason's mother should NEVER cook
2) As above
3) And again
4) Did they mention that Jason's mother can't cook?

The latest trials are going to plan; they are able to burn processed & refined coconut oil for about 25 minutes continuously before the incredible fumes overcome the entire petroleum complex.

They have been given the week off to recover from their smoke inhalation.
More news coming to you shortly.

*the president looks at the project, then at the people involved, the president then jumps and heads for the diplomatic room at an obviously unhealthy pace, demonstrated by the demolition of a wooden door that didn't open fast enough*

'what is this, why are those nations trying to get an alternative fuel like coconut oil?'

diplomat: 'err, no idea sir, you should ask the covert intellegence section'

'we don't have a covert intellegence section.'

diplomat: 'err, ask it to the region's intellegence group?'

'Much better, send a request for that information, maximum security transmissions only'

diplomat: 'err, wouldn't it be more usefull to send an airplane then sir?'

'Just do it, i want that report within 8 hours !'

*the president then turns and leaves, the already broken wooden door now getting ripped out of its hinges completely*

The team of Vrakian scientists settled themselves comfortably after meeting their counterparts in Zvarinograd. Word was also out that reps from AWM might also be here, which perked up some scientists. With much of the Drakonian crisis dealt with, they looked forward to future collaboration with fellow FKC nations.

The TDP tech scientists, while specializing more in recycling, were keenly interested in the usage of grains for oils and were eagerly pointing out how oil and other valuable minerals could be harvested from "alternative" sources. Some of them passed out some brochures displaying the new TDP tech logo.

Valkonezh Research Complex,
Valkonezh (Capital City of the United Communist States of Zvarinograd)

I thought I could never see any more scientists crammed in one place in my life.

Dr. Sergei Valkov weaved in and out crowds of scientists working, talking and walking all around. Local scientists, Zemlyan, Ostrovan, to foreign scientists, Iuthian, AWM and Vrakian. The facilities were teeming with men and women holding clipboards and ballpens, papers and paperclips. Everyone stopped for a moment as they witnessed the sputtering of an engine at the far end of the massive room, only to find that it blew in an abrupt fury of scrap metal and fire, the fire was quickly doused by some courageous Zemlyan researchers and so was the lab coat of the researcher who stood a little too close. Everyone went back to work so fast that it was almost comical, ignoring the weeping of that same researcher over his 'masterpiece'. The hustle and bustle of the large crowd was comparable to a city street, no time to stop and look, it just motivated you to move, to work.

Dr. Sergei Valkov finally reached the other end of the room, opening a door to another. He sighed as he looked into the other room, which was also filled with researchers from near and far.

I thought wrong.
