(Pics show Batch 1 without ski ramp - otherwise Batch 2 is essentially the same.)
Displacement: 25,700 tonnes
Length: 213.4m
Beam: 38m
Speed: 20 kts
Armament: 3 x Phalanx (CIWS), 2 x 20mm Close Range guns, Passive Decoys
Aircraft/Landing Craft: 12 x Sea King HC4 Medium Support Helicopters
6 x Lynx AH7, 6x Merlin Medium Helicopters or 6 x Gazelle Light Helicopters
(no crumbling crash-prone Sea Knight transports here)
or
15 x Sea Harriers
or a combination of all aircraft.
5 Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP) Mk 5 Landing Craft or LCAC
Sensors: Signaal/Marconi S1850M Long Range Radar (LRR) for air/surface search and air wing control
UAT Electronic Support Measures
Propulsion: 2 x Diesel motors, 2 shafts
Cost: £1 Billion
Currently the one of the two best Amphibious Assault Vessels in the world. Its small size allows it to get closer to shore than the U.S Wasp class, giving greater flexibility and power projection to its air group. Also, reduced costs allow for greater flexiblilty in strategic deployment.
The Batch 2 extends the original class by several metres and increases displacement by some tonnes. The conversion of upper deck includes a ski-ramp, similar to the very sucessful Invincible class carriers. This allows the deployment of a squadron of Sea Harriers or increased capacity for assault helicopters.
The true advantage of this craft is its capable air wing and the revolutionary radar systems that control its deployment. This affords the Ocean class with an unparalleled degree of self protection and the capability to work independant of a battlegroup.
Carring over 1000 marines, the Ocean class gives an excellent assault capability.
(Will put up specs on the air-wing if enough people are interested. Opinions and ideas appreciated!)
