OROGOR DEFECTS FROM PANTERA!

01-01-2004, 07:56
Illur, Orogor - Today, several nations were stunned when the territory of Orogor, formerly under the control of Pantera, unexpectedly defected from Pantera and proclaimed an independent protectorate. The territory of Orogor, a historically unstable region, has demanded that all prisoners who served the OSF - Orogor Separatist Front - be sent to Orogor immediately. The OSF was originally a radical organization dedicated to freeing Orogor from first the Commonwealth of Armustelia, then the country of Pantera over the course of several months.

The reclusive leader of the OSF, a man named Leonidas, is said to now be the head of the Orogor government, setting up a rubberstamp parliament in the capitol of Illur earlier. Leonidas was apparently optimistic about his abilities to keep Orogor free, judging from the intense propaganda campaign launched just hours after he took office. In particular, he reviles the now-defunct Commonwealth of Armustelia for "crimes against humanity and lesser races," and openly challenges Pantera to "spill Reaver blood to try and take this pitiful land." In a departure from his normal inflammatory tone, however, Leonidas now seeks to gain a more peaceful understanding with his neighbors. He has already established diplomatic relations with the Communist governments of the island nation of Keppel and the island city of Letrograd, and is evidently engaging in talks with other former Armustelian holdings, especially Mitaxis.

Regional experts admit that they are baffled by Orogor's sudden declaration of independence, given Orogor's extremely troubled history. It was only several months prior to the decision that Orogor came under the control of the nation of Pantera, both to avenge the sinking of Reaver warships by the OSF, and to punish the OSF for their attacks using the toxin Argola-C. Although most Orogor citizens felt quite comfortable with their Reaver superiors, the OSF nevertheless continued operations to free Orogor. The suddenness of the independence seems to suggest, as analyst Edmond Claymore says, "a puppet master at work in Orogor."

Leonidas remains confident in the success of the new Protectorate of Orogor, despite the terrorist actions of the OSF and the bitter resentment of his rule by several major nations. He has proclaimed Orogor to be "free and independent for all time, regardless of the cost in human life we may incur for our freedoms." Even with these words, the region of Armustelia sits silently and waits for more word on the surprising story of Orogor.

(OOC Note: I used to play the Commonwealth of Armustelia, so I have a little background on it. Let's assume that the Commonwealth, weakened by internal struggles and by attempted coups, has collapsed and that each region under Armustelian control is now an independent nation. Orogor will be the main focus of this RP, of course. I see a number of nations I've played with are still around, though. If you remember me, then let me say...I'm BAAAAACK!)

OOC: I don't remember you, but I do note that this will probably be a very interesting RP. Also, I wonder if you are able to defend against the rest of the APTO, as I'm sure that the others will pledge support, even if I have to sit it out.(damn new years nukes)

(OOC Note: Can't say I blame you for forgetting, considering it's been months since anything on Armustelia has appeared at all. Still, I figure that this will be a good RP of sorts...full scale secession doesn't happen too often. If anyone needs a good geopolitical reference for the regions I'm talking about, I've been working on a map of the region for a while now. When I finish it, I'll see if I can put it up somewhere.)

Illur, Orogor - Today, tensions mounted within Orogor as Leonidas, the self-styled ruler of the country, announced a massive armament program, with top secret research programs reportedly being preferable. Among the provisions of the six point program included measures that environmentalists see as an open declaration of war on forests, which apparently hold deposits of uranium. Despite the armament program, Orogor has opened negotiations with several nations, including Crimmond, who several months earlier participated in the Panteran war against Orogor. Leonidas is apparently banking on the relative obscuraty of his regime as an advantage, considering that most citizens of Crimmond, Pantera and other nations were at a loss to tell reporters what they knew about Orogor.

Locally, Orogor citizens were of mixed opinions about the armament program. Some conservative factions within the country applauded Leonidas' move, citing a general stimulation of the economy, which according to recent indices has reached a thriving level. More liberal factions decried the move, arguing that the armament would turn the OSF into a gigantic terrorist army capable of wiping out all neighbors. Even with only about 7 million citizens, Orogor nevertheless is dealing with problems that are not uncommon in larger, more established nation-states. Whether the conservatives or liberals are right seems to be a moot point for the time being, as Orogor tools up for home defense and, it is rumored, international espionage. Orogor officials denied any ties between the armament program and clandestine intelligence operations, categorically denying that the latter even exists in Orogor.

In the region of Armustelia, now split into provinces, are also skeptical. While the island of Keppel and city of Letrograd seem to be quite content with Orogor, others are not so certain. In the northern nation of Hollander, for instance, former Secretary of Public Information Robert Darlington said, "Orogor is obviously trying to stir up a fight. They must be mad if they think they can take on a billion soldiers. It's just not possible." The nation of Polta agreed with Darlington, and also agreed with the statement of Consul Darius Forbes: "Orogor is the bloodiest place on earth. Something about the place seems to make people bloodthirsty." Officials in Mitaxis, bordering Orogor, declined to give comment at this time.

International opinion has been sporadic at best, owing to the relative obscurity of the region. Only Panteran officials had any official stance on Orogor, and even that was unsteady. Most other nations do not even know about Orogor, although it appears Leonidas is doing his best to rectify the situation. The ruler of Orogor has reportedly called a press conference to gain recognition for the new nation of Orogor, and has invited several diplomats, among them Robert Darlington, to attend. Despite rumors of a growing, corrupt police state appearing in Orogor, it seems that Leonidas is quite willing to set the record straight.

Good afternoon, this is deejay Greg Baxter, bringing you the tunes of WPMJ, THE place for afternoon jams and enlightening talk! Let's take a look at our news...our top story, as you know, is the sudden secession of Orogor from Pantera, our lovely and angry neighbor. We here in Mitaxis have been quite away of Orogor's plans for some time, but what's surprising here is that there's been very little action in the last few days. Along the border, folks have been throwing up barriers in anticipation of a massive OSF initiative. Speaking of the OSF, I hear they've been officially designated the military branch of Orogor by order of - who else? OSF leader and Orogor's ruler, Leonidas. Now they're calling themselves the Frontline Army of Orogor, FAO. And THIS FAO doesn't sell toys, let me tell you that right now! Even as the OSF becomes the FAO, it seems Leonidas wants to be our "friends." That simply means he'll give us a three-hour grace period when we're being marched off to the executioners!

Moving on from Orogor, here's the latest chart-breaker in Mitaxis, the song "Missing Time" by the Existentialists. Hope you enjoy it, this is Greg Baxter with WPMJ!

(OOC: Okay, Orogor is this little country that used to be part of a Commonwealth, the Commonwealth of Armustelia. It separated from it in a way, then became a territorial holding of Pantera in a brutal terrorist war, then seceded just recently to proclaim itself the Protectorate of Orogor. You can read up the rest of the posts here to get a better idea of what's going on. And...er, tag?)
