"A national treasure was nearly lost today, as the Palladian Ninja-to was stolen from within the Ninjao Citadel. Fortunately, the thief was caught by the elite samurai who patrol and guard Ninjao, and the Ninja-to was returned to the Citadel. The identity of the thief, however, still is in question as there is no international record of the man. What is apparent is that he is not of Ninjao descent. How he got past the LWECS protective force-field is a related story.
...
Active Field Shaping Tower # 755 lost power earlier today and opened up a large hole in the LWECS. This is theoretically how the thief entered Ninjao. Fortunately, the AFS Tower was repaired within hours, and no other incidents have resulted from the mishap.
...
On the outskirts of Joshu, a large group of extremist evangelists were arrested today after a month-long investigation. The group was planning to enter the Citadel and, using illegally-acquired grenades, other explosives, and sub-machine guns, destroy every non-Christian place of worship. They also planned to capture and execute every religious leader in the Citadel. Fortunately, they were stopped.

In other news, the Science & Technology Department of Ninjao has announced it's plan to build a "space elevator" of sorts. The plan is currently only in its early developmental stages, but if such a project became a reality, it would mean a great many things for not only Ninjao, but the world. (For more details, visit http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/space_elevator_020327-1.html )

And finally, a "special surpise" has been arranged for the New Year's celebration tonight. Not many details are known, but what we have been told is to watch the LWECS shield. Also, whatever the government has in store, it is said to be visible for many nations near Ninjao."

Dr. Bing Bingston, a researcher at the P4lladian Institute for Apathy and Irrelevancy was walking through the corridors of the PIAI section of the Ninjaon Citadel. It was a busy, exciting time, and most people in the complex had moved outside to the mountainside where they had the best view of the night sky in the whole country. Only LWECS operators and essential power authority personell are left. Bingston, the man in charge of night operations at the LWECS command center, was very excited about the upcoming event. He was nervous, but quite sure it would come off as planned.

11:50. The provincial governors are now on TV, after addressing the nation on the nearly-explosive events at the citadel earlier, telling the people of Ninjao to look up, and expect power outage.

11:55. Bingston pulls the plug (er, pushed the button) and the whole island plunges into darkness. He is ready at the controls, ready to begin the show.

11:58. Time for the show to begin. The specially-designed plasma cannons fire into the air above the island. Much of the sky takes on a faint red glow. The glow becomes more intense, building up to...

12:00. The show is on. Bingston brings the plasma emitters to full power. He turns on the 3D imagery displays to get a good look.

"I knew that electromagnetic shield would come in handy..." Bing thought to himself, thoroghly enjoying the show. Visible for hundreds of miles, from many other nations, the man-made aurora borealis is a very nice way to start off the new year.

"It is now 9:14 am on the first day of 2004, and there are still many Ninjao citizens enjoying the celebrations. The Citadel has been an epicenter of emotion for over 24 hours now, but even so, nothing else can compare to the spectacle of last night. Many citizens married under the man-made aurora, and there are still many more vows being made.

With a new year comes new ideas, such as the Science & Technology Department's plan to eventually create what is currently being called a "space elevator". While the idea has been in circulation for some time, the Ninjao scientists are formulating ways to improve the experimental designs. No word yet as to when development is expected to begin.
...
Also, the current state of High Alert, which the Ninjao military has been under for some time, has been cancelled. Air patrols have been called off, and the extra troops which were deployed to guard the LWECS Active Field Shaping Towers are now back at home with their families. Border patrols have slackened off a bit, as well.

Yesterday, the Palladian Ninja-to (Ninjao's National Treasure) was almost stolen, but the thief was apprehended. His identity, still unknown, will most likely remain a mystery, as the suspect killed himself in the prison where he was held. He died via the painful method known as Frisbee Seppuku. The suspect obtained the frisbee from Physical Activites Officer Jonathan Marks, who was on duty at the time, and had no idea of the man's suicidal intentions.
"The suspect came over to me and asked me if there were any frisbees. I gave him one, and he walked over to the corner of the courtyard and sat down. Then he rolled it up, placed it in his mouth, pushed until you couldn't see it anymore, and then he died. I can't believe he pulled it off. Everybody was like 'HOLY CRAP!' It was amazing." said the PAO, who retained his job.

In a small, seemingly unrelated story, the nation of Joshu has been accepted into the hallowed halls of the United Nations!
...
And, in a final story, the government is expected to reveal a series of new reforms, which may help to improve the economy, civil rights, and political freedoms. These changes are due to the ever-increasing population of Ninjao- Joshu, for example, has gone from a population of around 6 million to a population of 8 million in just a few days. The changes are expected to go over well with the general populace.
