Simple enough. You play for about half a year, get really well known, and then get asked to be one. If you ask to be made one, they usually cross you out of the running, so watch out....they don't like people saying "I should be a mod, make me one". Besides, they also only make mods when they need them - when one drops out (very rare) or when membership is high enough to warrant more mods....
