ASNB Special Report by Jack Reynolds

(Begin transmission)

Reynolds: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight on Special Report:

Burning of Books - Has censorship in ASW gone too far?
Christmas Day Massacre - Why aren't we allowed to celebrate religions in ASW?
Midlonian Uranium Markets - Has ASW reached a peak in fighting free trade?

All these stories and more tonight on Special Report. We'll be back after these messages.

-Cuts to commercial advertising Food™ brand food.-

Reynolds: Welcome back to ASNB Special Report. Today, all over the nation, officials have called for the banning of books. The list is lengthy, calling for the annihilation of political, philosophical, historical, religious, and fictional literature. We have a video clip of the announcement.

-Flashes to the Director of Media in front of a podium reading off a prepared speech, waits a few moments and cuts back-

Reynolds: The reasons for the calling of the censorship is to eradicate unorthodox thought against the government. According to the Director of Media, political literature has called for uprisings and violence against established order. In order to prevent anarchy, the government has found it necessary to burn multitudes of books of all different kinds.

Among the books called to be burned are The Communist Manifesto, Capitol, Inferno, Pergatorio, Paradiso, Mein Kampf, Achtung Panzer, The Quran, The Bible (both testaments), Mao's Little Red Book, Effects of Capitalism in Russia, Uncle Tom's Cabin, 1984, Homage to Catalina, The Windchime Legacy, A Clockwork Orange, The Diaries of Anne Frank, and many other great works of the time. Plays, musical recordings, video tapes, and DVDs are even being set to the flame. In the end, the Director of Media theorizes that ASW can be a nation entirely free of "political, religous, and philosophical venom".

...ASWcan be a nation entirely free of "politcal, religious, and philisophical venom."

Ironically, by burning these books, you are turning you're goverment into something much worse than venom. It has no become the snake. People need to read about other forms of government and famous works that deal with that subject. Not only does it mean that your people will be more educated, it will show the good, yes, but also the BAD and sometimes HORRIFIC aspects of some of the less-than-acceptable forms of government.

By doing this you are dooming your nation to people that will in the end, actually, have a more likely inclination to revolt.

Be forwarned.

OoCL 1984 is a superb book. All should read it.

OOC: Yea, I love that book.. you see, my government wants people to turn sheep-like and uneducated, so we're gradually gutting out the education system starting with reading, etc. In the beginning, yes, they will want to revolt, but eventually, they will be so stupid that they can easily be controlled. I mean, if you take the example FROM 1984, books are banned. Most everyone tends to obey the government as well. Through combinations of brute force and censorship, it worked in the story... this is pretty much story-esque, so it can work here as well.

If I may, that's all well and... controlling... but you probably shouldn't announce it to your nation... people do listen on the occasion, you know.
