With everybody who would otherwise care in turmoil, and Yggdrasil being the last outpost of stability on the planet (since no sane person would dare risk it falling), the Snel decided to try and get some good out of the situation, specifically the recent weather disturbances and the fact that everybody is too preoccupied to stop them.
The River of Souls was tainted with specially engineered phytoplankton and a minority of zooplankton. The same was released into the Mare Argyre. And, in a move that took advantage of the fact that the terraformation guidelines for the Martian Duma were never ratified, 6-inch wide black spheres began to fall from Yggdrasil into the blood-red waters of Mare Hellas.
