Attack on Auman's Northern Port

21-12-2003, 21:35
The small Aumanii base constructed in former Kinslayer territory that had caused such a commotion on Mars was perhaps the most heavily garrissoned town worldwide. Intelligence had been able to confirm that it held 400,000 Tannelornian Knights & 500,000 Aumanii crack troopers in addittion to a further 700,000 assorted Aumanii & Norieganian military personnel- posibly more.

Though it had- coupled with the Lord Melkor's planetfall -been the primary catalyst for disaster on Mars, it had been largely ignored. The main part of the fighting had been in orbit & on the ground at the southern pole. For all the trouble it had caused the Aumanii port remained totally unscathed, forces hostile to the Vascilians perhaps dissauded by the fact that it was locked within Mangalan territory.

No longer.

High above the red planet- less than a hundred klicks out from Mangalan space -a lone Imperial cruiser held its position.

Previously it had been thought that the Aumanii port was to all intents & purposes untouchable. Inside Mangala, it looked as though one would have to invade the Democratic Imperium in order to get to the Aumanii, & it would be unprofitable to provoke the Mangalans into escalating the conflict. Certainly the Mangalans had already defied the anti-League powers by sending troops to reinforce the Hellespontos, but the country had little stomach for the war; what little support there was for it had dwindled almost to nothingness, & with Maya Toitovna's return to Martian space the nation seemed on the verge open rebellion.

The Dark Lord was of the opinion, then, that with Mangala in dissaray the time had come to strike at the Vascilians & their irritating little port.

There was a single approach to the trading base that the High Command would be able to exploit that the Aumanii had missed. A narrow "tube" extending upwards from the port town & through Mangalan space- a dropship landing that went straight down this tube would avoid violating Mangala's sovereign territory in any way if attempted from free space.

This now was what Sauron's forces had set out to do. A dozen fast-moving military dropships had launched stealthily from the malformed cruiser whilst the Mangalans & Toitovna's insurgents faced one another, & now they screamed straight down towards the troublesome port through the constrictive tube of Vascilian space, the light glittering brilliantly on their hulls' reflective surfaces, straight towards the the immense garrison that would await them on the ground...

The battle began in earnest, the troops defending the port had much time to prepare for the invasion, seeing as this was the most likely place for fighting to begin.

The forces of Lord Sauron had taken advantage of the 10 km port authority set up by Auman and launched an assault via the conduit, though the speed of the enemy insertion was great the space they were confined to made them easy targets. Aumanii Air Defenses began to pop away at the dropships, 250 high energy versions of the Laser AA were installed in lieu of the usual light cannons due to space restrictions(These guns are pretty powerful, probably knock out one of those ships in one or two shots)

Combat analyst's didn't have to work hard to determine the enemy landing positions, the port was built at the foot of a large mountain and there were only two possible landing spots, the first being the sanctioned landing zone of the port which had been blocked off by the troops or, a small valley that was overlooked by several hundred batteries of artillery. The terrain in and around the port was in the Vascilians favour, rough and riddled with caves it was the perfect spot for a well dug in infantry force to defend. Armoured vehicles would be almost useless and movement of supplies was done via beast of burden.

The Aumanii troops were some of Overlord Marduks personal elite, grizzled combat veterans they were the most seasoned force in the port authority. They quickly began setting up positions blocking off the most likely routes into the port area and booby trapping damn near everything. Though lacking airsupport they had the advantage in numbers and firepower at the moment and they knew exactly how to exploit it.

OOC:

The defender picks the battleground in warfare...the port was designed to be damn near impervious to anything but attrition. This is gonna be a tough fight for sure, mostly in close infantry fighting and artillery duelling. I wanted this to be different from the plains fighting and urban combat that is being done in the other threads.

I may not be on to much as its christmas in a few days so...just bare with me.

As soon as the incoming bogeys were detected, the subs in the gulf deployed once again, surfacing just long enough to deploy 20 gundrones and 6 Entopters which quickly made their way towards the port.

It becomes readily apparent why the dropships glitter & shine so in the sky as the laser AA batteries spring to life, the powerful beams glancing & defracting all over the place as they meet the fast moving craft- plated, as they are, with the same type of high quality mirrors as are used to focus THELs & the like. Evidently the craft have been customised for their dark purposes.

One dropship is unlucky, however, entry into the atmosphere of Mars having compromised its reflective plating & allowing for multiple contacts with the defensive lasers to slag its armoured plating & blow out the cockpit. The craft is promptly burned up, molten debris raining down upon the town as the dropship is ripped apart by G-forces.

The remaining craft continue to scream down upon the town, achieving ridiculous speeds, all the time juking & jinking around in the small space allowed them in the conduit, their cannons firing in sporadic bursts at the AA defences & fortifications when the opportunity comes.

OOC: I've always said that good old-fashioned ballistics were superior to all this plasmic lasery crap. The above is a reason why  .

A single horn could be heard wailing in the distance. A full artillery division was in action, firing upon the landed dropships, two hundred and fifty large calibre artillery cannons and man more lighter mortars and rockets poured into the disputed landing zones of the enemy. Thousands of Orcs(I assume thats what they are?) streamed from the landers like a swarm of insects, firing their weapons every which way...though the Aumanii positions were strong and it was difficult to harm the men within. Lord General Polosh, the acting commander of the Aumanii garrison was worried about the defense of the ridges overlooking the port facility. The ranges were close and Aumanii troops weren't trained for close fighting, the reputation of the Orc hoarde in melee was well known and feared.

----

Trooper Girbert and his partner had been deployed via Hopper to an isolated landing zone, some of Saurons men had been dropped in the boonies to the west of the port. General Polosh had sent a reactionary force comprising of snipers and special forces operatives to head them off. Twenty five hundred men in total were arrayed across the mountain side preparing an Ambush for the enemy(If you'll accept it)
Orders had come down the line, the snipers were too aim for the stupidest looking Orcs...they were the leaders most of the time. Girbert had nestled into a nice cave overlooking a wide valley, vision was limited to almost 2000 meters by a thick mist, Orcs were fast at night and if the wind didn't pick up and blow the fog elsewhere this mission could turn disasterous.

The commander of the reactionary force, Colonel Dautrive, was an experienced, though unimaginative, officer and had deployed the force in a classic formation, emphasizing the firepower that was so famous in the Aumanii military. With the fog as it is though, it would be difficult to call for airstrikes or artillery support. The mist clearly favoured the enemy, artillery would come within a hairs breadth of friendly troops when the attack began.

------

A full Infantry division was deployed in and around the Port Facility. If Colonel Waylands artillery division were to fail in defending the landing zones than it would be up to General Polosh's men to keep the port from falling into enemy hands...it was expected that this battle would degrade into bitter hand to hand fighting in all sectors, the appearance of this fog will prove the downfall of the defenders unless it clears soon.

OOC:

Yeah, I made the western front with the Special forces guys cause I wanted to do some real close range combat with them...I just read the chapter in the Two Towers "The Uruk Hai"...man, the Rohirrim rule!
The Artillery division defending the largest drop zone will most be a shoot out, unless of course your men manage to take the fight to them.
The Infantry are waiting in the port until either, they are needed for a counterpush into the Orc landing zones, or, the Artillery are pushed back and they need to defend the port. The terrain was detailed in the first post...mostly mountainous terrain, llike Hong Kong is how I imagined it.

Lord Sauron Reborn

OOC:

Okay, I vowed I'd wrap up this and any other dumb war threads I'd gotten into before moving onto more worthwhile RPs, so here I am.

Auman, you've assumed a bit much, there (I hadn't even landed yet, assuming that was my interion), so I'm afraid much of your post is null and void. Apologies if this is crap; it's a bit of a rush job and my heart's not in it, so no biblical disaster style or anything. Just want to get it out of the way.

IC:

The remaining dropships screamed downward still, relentless. What sort of new devilry would allow the things to land safely, now? Travelling at the speeds they were, one most certainly have missed the dissapearance of two of them as they plowed through the blossoming explosions in the sky thrown up by airbursting artillery shells from the Vascillian defence. It was hardly of any consequence. The dropships did not level out. They had never been going to. Instead, they plowed headlong into the ground.

And the overpopulated little port town was consumed in a ball of purifying white fire.

Balls, more accurately. The Dark Lord's lieutenants were not fool enough to think they could take and hold an isolated area as densely defended as the Northern Port- not with the troops he could fit on twelve light dropships. And even if they could, why would they want to? What could be capable of pacifying the town and loaded onto said ships, though, had been (perhaps a bit lamely) some of the realm's increasingly bothersome stockpile of obsolescent atomic weaponry. The attack, as would be obvious to analysts who would later observe it, was nothing more than a suicide run.

The Aumanii town was paying the price for its lack of vision--shrouded now by a number of irregular mushroom clouds. The cruiser responsible for their presence was already out of the system.

OOC:

God, that pretty much sucked. Anyway, yeah- that's about two megatons worth of devastation overall, slightly scattered. That's more than enough to devestate an overcrowded little port, I think. Built on a bunch of subterranean caves by a riverside at the foot of a mountain, what's left of it would likely collapse into a flooded pit and be buried by the devestated mountainside.

I might edit this later to tart up the IC section- it's not the most inspiring piece of literature.

The valley lit up in a ball of incandesence. There was no time for panic, only the death and pain brought by a nuclear catastrophy. In a flash over 200,000 Aumanii soldiers were incinerated, even more died afterward from exposure to radiation. The port, the cause of the build up and subsequent war was completely destroyed. Billions of TOI wasted, billions more in trade lost. A disaster, a complete and utter disaster.
