Project: Stronghold

Zvarinograd

Arkenskaya, a town southwest of the capital city of the United Socialist States of Zvarinograd, once was a project to serve as a chokehole entrance to the capital city. That project was abandoned due to the fact that the country's waters became so infested by icebergs (The country is an archipelago north of Siberia and the Russian Federation), a naval invasion would be suicide without prior icebreaker patrols (That wouldn't be possible either, what was stopping the country from sinking those icebreakers?). Of course, that also meant that the country would have no navy and was locked in ice until it came to pass that the country had to rely on airpower to solve it's solidarity to the world. The country became open to the world in September 25, 2003.

As time passed, the country's aircraft fleet grew dramatically. Every year the United Socialist States of Zvarinograd's airforce would double (or at one time, nearly triple) in size. It became apparent that the country's military will find it's greatest success in airpower. Since then, airbases and international airports were constructed nationwide. Air traffic rose to unimaginable heights, billions of dollars were poured into the expansion, research and maintenance of the nation's already massive airforce. Arkenskaya became a staging area for all military aircraft leaving the country, twelve airbases prove this fact.

An aspiring engineer, Natalie Temlyakov, envisioned a project that prove as testament to the United Socialist States of Zvarinograd's claims that it is part of the leading countries in airpower. Her proposal quickly came into realization, due to the influx of funding the country spends in airpower.

Her proposal was to build, not only the world's largest, but the world's greatest airbase. She envisioned it to be the epitome of airpower, superior to any other in the world and she wasn't going to stop there. She was planning for it to be expanded every year, to maintain hold of the record for eternity. The government consented to her dreams.

A total of 1425 square miles of vast winter wasteland, 500,000 workers, the finest machinery and $200 billion was set to this humoungous task. The men were inspired to know that they were to build a wonder of the modern world. They were determined to do it for the only pride and glory of the United Socialist States of Zvarinograd, it's airforce.

Interested in any of my airships? With an air force to fly escort, they are quite powerful.

What do airships do?
21-12-2003, 18:07
They are large craft that fly through the air and carry enough firepower to level a small city. The drawback is relatively slow speed and they need aircraft protection.

I don't mean to rain on your parade of big air bases, but wouldn't something of that size be a massively easy to hit bullseye?

As I was going to say:"Large-ass target for Ortillery"

Or artillery, missiles, or wmds... Also wouldnt the size of that thing make it almost impossible too gaurd thus making the base a easy target for terrorists?

OOC:
Do you want an assessment of my military to question the vunerability of the airbase?

First of all, I would normally take the fight to the enemy. My logistics and airforce almost always provides me with a first strike ability, unless the enemy attacked with ballistic missles, in which case my (still developing) anti-ballistic missle system will attempt to shoot it down.

Keeping pressure on him by sending a relentless wave of aircraft might eventually make him lose hope of an offensive.

Second, it appears you severely underestimate my airforce. I have no navy, my army is small compared to my size but my airforce, however, rivals that of nations far larger than myself.

Third, location. I mentioned that the United Socialist states of Zvarinograd is an archipelago north of the Russian Federation. With waters infested by icebergs and a near-arctic climate, my country is a navy's worst nightmare. That's why I don't have one.

That also means that the only feasible way into my country, short of sending a fleet of icebreakers with a lot of escorting ships equipped with CIWS and hoping that my patrolling anti-shipping aircraft doesn't see them, is by airforce. That leads back to number two, you would be severely underestimating my own airforce.

Fourth, propaganda and psychological warfare. Doesn't the world's largest airbase say, "My country has a gigantic airforce"? You might know that it's vunerable but your soldiers might not. It's never too late to rule by fear, you know.

Fifth, space-based weapons? You have a point but I usually tend to avoid them in a roleplay. (Avoid, not completely ignore, I respect people's decisions when they want to roleplay in modern - near-future technology with those things.)

Lastly, come on, give me a break. For the sake of having fun in this game, I want to have the world's greatest airbase. Please?

What's to stop a submarine (or several) sailing under the ice then lobbing an assortment of cruise missiles at the base, then escaping under the ice?

And what happens if there's a blizzard (or some other extreme weather) which makes it impossible for the helicopters to fly? (this would also cripple the rest of your airforce)

OOC:
What makes you think my aircraft isn't built to resist the climate? I can't just have a gigantic airforce and not think of the cold harsh weather. True, my helicopters might have difficulty flying, but my Su-27PDs (originally, Su-27PDs are built as a prototype for a long endurance version) modified for ASW duty can probably break through the harsh wind and stay there without freezing it's electronics or it's engine.

I am quite open to the idea of having the World's Largest Airbase, however, it presents alot of very serious problems and until you address them, no one is going to recognize the fact that you have it. At least make it so that I can't pummel it with some AIM-7 Sparrows and destroy the whole base in a couple of hours.

OOC: Yes, there are going to be logistical and tactical issues he will have to address... but it makes for good roleplay. Don't read too deeply into this. :)

IC: The Federation congratulates Zvarinograd on its accomplishments in aviation and is looking forward to the strategic competition this new airbase encourages. The Federation Joint Forces Command is also considering the development of an integrated joint services deployment facility.

So, for the most part, it's tactical weakness is a missle attack, from submarines, strike fighters and cruise missles. (I doubt the second one though, my airforce almost always ensures air superiority in the battles I fight.) I will have to have a tight anti-missle defense system, any suggestions?

In case you did not know, The Defender and Sky Base super-zeppelins are up for sale now. Also, orders may be made for special VIP craft, such as one we made recently as special order (i forget who for):

Raysia Aerospace will meet your needs, whatever they are... if we don't make it, we'll try harder.

Virgin Aerospace, a Taiwanese company, has recently bought up ESAA which was in the process of applying finishing touches to the Airbourne Laser. Our minister of Commerce will discuss the sharing of this technology with Virgin Aerospace executives.

OOC: I say go ahead and build the greatest airbase. You've already established yourself as a major air force power.
