Massive Earthquake Rocks the Republic!

Nucontre News Agency broadcast:
MUTER-FECK, DA'AMFECK -- Da'amfeck's biggest ever recorded earthquake shook a southeastern region Thursday and triggered a series of strong aftershocks. Thousands of people are reported dead, injured, or missing. The property destroyed in the quake is valued near 65 million Da'amfeckian dollars.
The 8.6-magnitude tremor's epicenter was near the city of Coronto'a, about 400 miles south east of the capital, Muter-feck, the People's Weather Bureau said.
The quake was strong enough to shake buildings in Muter-feck and even the northern cities of Virgule and Boste for about three minutes.
Less than an hour later, at least four aftershocks hit the Ashtoner-o'mal region. Their magnitude ranged from 4.6 to 6.1, the People's Weather Bureau said.
The 8.8-magnitude quake was the biggest ever seen in Da'amfeck, the bureau said. This year's second-strongest tremor was a 7.5-magnitude quake in June located in the Belarian Ocean off the east coastal city of New Payse, the bureau said.
Tremors are rare in this part of Jon-was'ir and this quake was unprecedented.

A call to all nations who have it in their hearts to help us! We are desperate. Thousands of people are dead or dying and over a million are without food or shelter. Anarchy is rampant in the stricken regions. It is vitally important that we receive outside aid, as it is the middle of the rainy season and there is severe flooding taking place at this moment in the area around Coronto'a. Also reports of landslides in the Eridanian mountains are coming in. Our army, which is relativley small, can only do so much to aid our people, and many of them are away on peace-keeping missions. Please help us in any way you can. We are very desperate and we need your assisstance badly!

[A small, wiry man approaches the podium of an international telecast. The graphic at the bottom identifies him as Vinz Clortho, Press Secretary for The Doomsday Cult.]
Clortho: Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great sadness today that I inform you of a terrible tragedy that has befallen Da'amfeck. As many of you are aware, recent seismic activities have stricken several nations, and Da'amfeck is one that has been hit the hardest. I urge all members of the international community to pull together and help the people of Da'amfeck in their times of troubles. Alas, the Doomsday Cult has nothing to offer Da'amfeck in the way of medical aide, as that has not been our domestic policy. However, what we offer, if it is accepted, is the use of 8,000 soldiers to aide in keeping the peace during what is sure to be a time of horrific rioting and suffering.
[Clortho shifts the papers in his hands.]
Clortho: As our great Leader has informed all citizens of The Doomsday Cult, the end times are near. We must continue to prepare for the Coming of Gozer. I urge all peoples of The Doomsday Cult to continue our bizarre rituals, in hopes that we will one day bring about the end of this world. The earthquake--- although an unfortunate incident as I'm sure many righteous were slain, just as the wicked--- can only be taken as a sign that the return of Gozer inches nearer and nearer by the day. Stay vigilant, people of The Doomsday Cult, but always remember--- our teachings instruct us to lend a helping hand to those in peril. To that end, we offer our assistance to Da'amfeck. Thank you.
[Clortho steps down from the podium amid the cheers of his public.]
The Germanic State of Zossen is shipping over 100,000 gallons of drinking water and 250k tons of Food. We would like to warn you that it is not a good idea to invite peacekeeping forces in your nation unless they are allies and can be trusted.

Extract from Our revered Triangle magazine from our armed forces
The Japanese army first landed in southern Life of Bryan and northern Jasada on December 8, 2002. This was one arm of a major offensive throughout the Pacific Theatre that included the destruction of the American Fleet in Hawaii and the invasion of the Philippines and Hong Kong. All this took place in the span of several hours. Immediately, the Japanese began air raids upon air fields in Life of Bryan.
Throughout the two-month battle for Malaya, the Royal Army Medical Services fought their own war to save lives.
The royal Army medical services have the highest award for valour of all our armed services both in peace time and war, even beating our elite.
As a result Prime Minister Bottom Burp  and his government would like to offer you the services of 207, 208 Field Hospitals & 5 Rapid Response field Ambulance. This to include medicines, equipment ( water purification & our famour Oxygen technology to generate molecular growth) and personnel. On receipt of your agreement I will authorise a fleet of sea kings to dispatch all to your region.

Zossen: Many thanks. There is nothing else you can do for us, except possibly send some kind of temporary shelter for our citizens. Our army has basically got the rescue situation under control with the help of foreign aid workers, but helicopters or powerboats would be appreciated for the search of missing people in the great floodplains of the south east, north of the Mountains.
We are aware of the danger. Any peacekeepers entering our country are split into very small militarily inconsequential units. But thank you for the well-meant warning.

People's Daily excerpt:
CORONTO'A, DA'AMFECK -- After the huge earthquake which shook this region Thursday, causing landslides in the mountains and tsunami's as far away as Nucontre, the citizens of this beleagered region are finally getting some rest.
"It was tough for the first day or so," says a truck driver from Eraan, a small mining town south or Coronto'a. "I had just returned from a run up to Stanton and Boste. Around 5 in the morning we began feeling tremors, and around 6:30 the main earthquake struck. Luckily we were high enough in the mountains for our house to withstand the seismic shock."
Others were not so lucky. Anna Belarachi, a native of the small city of Gelerne, says her home in the outskirts was completely destroyed, along with her car, which was crushed by a falling building. "I have nothing left," she sobbed. There is no hope of regaining any of her possessions because the area in which she lived was flooded when the monsoon came and there were no dykes to stop the rain from building up in low lying regions.
She was one of the many Da'amfeckians who were aided by the multi-national aid which came to the help of Da'amfeck. A Jasadi Sea-King helicopter saved her and her husband as they tried desperately to stay afloat in the torrential rain. They were given food brought in by Zossen and then emigrated to Samtonia, where 'it was more peaceful'.
Luckily most of the danger is now gone. All the aftershocks are finished and all the homeless are being housed and the sick treated.
The disastor, while being undeniably bloody and terrible (more than 15 thousand people were killed) was good for Da'amfeck's foreign service. We have established links with many countries previously unknown to us, and have promised a military alliance with many n00b's.
The Prime Minister of Da'amfeck made a speech yesterday in Muter-feck commending the armed forces for their hard work and vigourously thanking the international aid coalition for their help. Each nation was given an IOU of $30 million Da'amfeckian Dollars.

By the way, if anyone would like to see the area struck by the earthquake, look at THIS PAGE (http://www.freewebs.com/paysebasin/prdaamfeck.htm) and scroll down until you see the map. Look at the south-east. The area affected by the quake is a rough sphere with a center in Coronto'a and a radius stretching from Coronto'a, in Demile Province, to Mishover in Ashtoner-o'mal Province. The Mountains are south of Mishover, and the great floodplains are in the triangle made by Salo, Coronto'a and Boro.

It seems that thanks to the international coalition, the crisis is over. Now all we need are engineers. Thousands and thousands of engineers, to rebuild the great city of Coronto'a, once a large city of 5.5 million, now flattened to the ground and flooded at its northern end.
By the way, we are holding a contest for archetectural designs; the best design for the new town hall (to be constructed next spring) will warrant a $25 m DD prize.

Thank you for your gracious offer of mental-health assisstance. However, we are a population of more than 200 million, and we have many councillors who have been flown into the stricken region. Your kindness is appreciated, however.
As for the military alliance, if you don't want our troops in your country, we can simply reserve a section of our army to be on constant standby, ready to drop into your country, if you ever get yourself into a tight spot. Also, our Protectorate, New Da'amfeck, is more than willing to assist you in any way possible.
Unfortunately, we do not usually export couches. The Republic and its protectorate nation mainly manufacture weapons and armaments, beverages, and uranium. If you should desire any of these products we would be more than happy to send some to you. On the other hand, I'm sure that my secretary can find a couch-making company somewhere in the Realm of Da'amfeck.

As the representative of Jasada i have taken advisement of your plight to address mental health well being. I understand that you require a consignment of couches. As a former social worker I feel i need to draw your attention to a few details before we move to trade.
1. Couches for counsellors only encourage the counsellors to fall asleep whilst listening to the moans of "patients"
2. Recent research suggests that getting married is good for the mental health of women (see radio 2 new 1pm 22/12/03)
3. Counselling, prescribing of drugs will in the log term prove more advantageous as you dont have to pay counsellors, drug companies can multi task making different drugs and you can create a dependency culture, which in turn promotes an income and a profit.
I hope that my personal support in this matter is of some use to your country men, alternatively you could request Daamfeck to donate all their spare furniture from the quake (from offices) and use them at least this would be free?!?

The snow will not be needed, but the offer is appreciated. We do not celebrate Christmas in the Republic; instead we celebrate Da'amfeck Day on the summer solstice and many celebrate Nu-allaghrah on the winter solstice. However we are just south of the equator and snow is alien to our population, except those who live high in the mountain ranges.
