Portable airstrip research begins.

Raysia is currently researching possible plans for a portable airstrip. Their goal is to develop something that can be collapsed or stacked in layers, loaded onto a super-zeppelin (max lift: 2,500 tons), and dropped onto a relatively flat area of land in invaded territory, where it can be unfolded into a 10,000 foot runway, capable of landing larger aircraft, such as Raysia's Megafortress Bombers, or UCAV carriers.

Yes, this does seem somewhat far-fetched, but nevertheless, engineers are hard at work, testing models of several different concept.

OOC: any ideas?

OOC-Titanium... Can't be using anything heavy... Lighter version of a carrier deck?

Anyway, wouldn't large bombers have global range anyway?

For transports, this is a good idea though...

For transports, this is a good idea though...yes, they do have great range, but right now our only method of deploying tanks etc to an airfield-less battleground is to drop them from the sky (which is very possible with Raysian technology, just kind of expensive...)

It could be feasable, there is a firm out there who produce small light weight helicopter landing pads that fit in the back of a pickup and can be set up on all sort of gradiants, the pikcup mounted version can support most light to medium helos.

Big logistics planes are another matter but i imgaine that the idea could be scaled up. you could reduce the weight of it my making it limited use (say 10 landings/take offs before replacement) but that could prove more expensive in the long run.

OOC: What is it with you and airships? To lift 2,500tons you need over 5 MILLION cublic meters of helium space so that 1 huge target that can easily be hit.

IC:Have you tried daisy cutters+cargo planes? Even your AN-225's are rough field capible and a couple of daisy cutter would make a nice runway(thats was there original job)? Sure you need to fly in cargo planes to drop the bombs to make the runway but who makes runways in enemy territory.

This would be a cheaper sollution and cargo planes can carry much much more per cublic meter of plane than airships.
