Launch of the Starfleet (Four very small pictures in thread)

OOC: We're set jointly in the Star Trek universe and the Nation States universe. That might make some of the below make sense. Also, if you think we are too young for this, please say so, although I remember someone saying that 300 Million was the minimum point for having a spacefleet, and we are over that.

IC:

After long and protracted purchasing negotiations and modifications, Tirlida has launched their spacefleet.

It currently consists of:

2x Voo Class Corvette

(Voo is Tirlidan for Intrepid.)

Until we can construct, on our own, a flagship, these purchased and upgraded by us will serve as our flagship.

Length: 109 Meters
Decks: 4
Mass: 120,000 Tons
Crew: 8
Weapons:
1x Disrupter Cannon, Total Output 2,500 Terawatts
2x Plasma Based Torpedo Launcher, 25 Torpedos Carried

Combat Systems:
Graviton Based Shields, total output 205,500 TeraJoules
Standard Durainium/Tritanium Alloy Single Hull Single Hull
Structual Integrity Field

Maximum Warp: Warp 8.8

6x Fesaz Class Patrol Ship

(Voo is Tirlidan for Puissant.)

These will make up the core of our fleet.

Length: 40 Meters
Decks: 2
Mass: 45,000 Tons
Crew: 4
Weapons:
1x Disrupter Cannon, Total Output 917 Terawatts
1x Plasma Based Torpedo Launcher. 10 Torpedos Carried

Combat Systems:
Graviton Based Shields, total output 75,412 TeraJoules
Standard Durainium/Tritanium Alloy Single Hull
Structual Integrity Field

Maximum Warp: Warp 8

20x Sepil Class Shuttle/Fighter

(Sepil is Tirlidan for Lightning.)

These will be used as fighters and interstellar transports. Not designed to be carried aboard our ships due to its size. The only ones (besides the warp pods) fully built by us, since we purchased the designs from a distant civilization via subspace radio.

Maximum Warp: Warp 5

75x Warp Pod

These are small, two-person, utility vessels designed to be carried aboard ships. The Voo carries two, while the Fesaz carries one.

Length: 3.5 Meters

Since you last heard from us, we have put into service two more Voo, and four more Fesaz, along with the appropriate warp pods for them.

We are also beginning design of the Varinga class. A Varinga is a predatory bird native to Tirlida. It will be a combat-oriented (rather than multirole like the Voo) corvette/scout design slightly smaller than the Voo.

OOC: You look like your trying very hard to be reasonable, and that is something I appretiate. So I'll try to say this in the most non-hostile way possible.

Be very very carefull with numbers.

Example: Your 2,500 Terawatt "disruptors"....

1 kilogram of deuterium/tritium fused together at 90% efficiency provides roughly 2.589 x 10^15 joules of energy. That is, just over 2,500 Terajoules.

At 90% efficency, your one disroupter would use a kilogram of fusion fuel every single second.

This all translates to about a 595kiloton nuclear explosion in your reactor every second.

Lets not forget that you have to power other weapons, shields, artificial gravity, life support, engines...I hope your getting the picture.

Most experianced players on NS forget numbers completely. They don't want to even bother with the physics...and unless you've taken a couple college level courses and your willing to do the work, I suggest you forget them too.

There are a couple good, non-physics ways to measure ship quality.

You can make a cost/size comparison or a nation population/ship/fleet size comparison. A lot of people also take into account RP quality. The more effort someone puts into RP, the more rewarding the NS community will be to them.

So please, be careful with those numbers. If your not willing to work out the physics, just throw them out. Don't be ashamed about it either, most of the good RPers do.

Best of luck,

I second this - steer clear of most 'real' numbers if at all possible. I've been playing a Star Trek technology centered nation for a long time and I have learned to hate them with a passion. If I were to suggest a way of writting them up while avoiding real numbers I would use the ship statistics from the Star Trek RPG. Thus you know the compartive power level, but it also leaves you free to adjust up and down depending on whether your technology would make the story far too short.

Remember this as well - and this is more directed at the NS community instead of you in particular - roleplaying is about the characters and their thoughts and actions, not about the technology. This isn't hard and fast, but it's a good rule to follow as much as possible. Don't throw numbers at the problem - write about it and the way the character is going to go about solving it. This can eliminate a lot of trouble with numbers as well.

OOC:

Exactly!

Pick up any (good) sci-fi book and take a good look. What will you see? All the technology, all the spaceships and ray guns and what-have-you are all just plot tools. They influence the way people interact.

The best technology in NS is that which makes your nation and characters unique.
