Election Special

Todays Parliamentry and Presidential Elections in Bekarus saw the power of the Social Democrats evaporate. The Reform party was the biggest winner but why?

We asked former Social Democrat voters why they voted to abandon Belarus' socialist tradition...

[list]I am fed up of lies and taxes [voted REFORM]

The Social Democrats are ruining the economy, I don't pay my taxes to fund some illegal asylum seeker [voted BELARUSSIAN FRONT]

I'm fed up of these Capitalist pupets. [voted Communist]

We need to liberalise the economy and increase defence spending [voted REFORM]

The Reform Party of Belarus believes:

*the future of Belarus lies in closer Inernational co-operation and Belarussian membership of the EU and UN

*that for the Belarussian economy to prosper it must open its self up to foreign investment and free trade

*thatn our security needs can not only be met by foreign assistance, but by the might of our own forces

I hope that was not intended as a threat? The Reform party was duely elected by the people of Belarus who are fed up of mass imigration and restrictions of private enterprise

The Reform party have been elected because Socialism has almost caused our economy to crash... I am only sorry that the Social Democrats remain a large party in the Parliament.

The President of Belarus speaks frankly to Belarus 1's Mikel Hassan

Mr President congratulations on your unexpected victory, what do you put your electorol success down to?

It is very simple, the good people of Belarus have had enough of good intentions and demand real leadership - that is what my administration will provide.

What are you plands for the coming Parliamentry session?

Firstly end the red tape thats holding bussiness back, open the Belarussian market to foreign investors and lower the tax burden

And how do you intend to lower taxes?

Simple, cut spending, we don't need to have Refugees, and why should the hard working people of Belarus look after the bums and outcasts with extensive welfare packages?! I'll tell you the answer to that - they shouldn't

Sorry, you said 'we don't need to have refugees' what are you proposing?

Kick 'em out - This is a Belarus for Belarussians!!!

Ok then... but you don't expect Parliament to aprove that do you?

[i]Parliament will do what I ask them to do - We have ways of getting contreversial legislation through the house.

Police estimate that over one million people have taken to the streets, although organisers claim that the figure is double that.

The President has down played the protests saying that he was democratically elected by the Belarussian people.

The USSK have no evidence of election fixing and so must accept the result as the true vote of the people and therefore respect that decision. However we place our full support behind the Social Democrats.

A statement from the SDP leader, Miss Tatyana Ruskovich

Yesturdays demonstrations in Minsk which attracted 2 million angry Belarussians represent both the saddest and proudest moments of Belarussian History.

Saddest because only 24 hours after a democratic election the people of Belarus took to the streets to protest over the results and proudest as the lies of the Reform parties right-wing agenda was exposed and the great people of this land spoke with one voice and opposed the planned destruction of our civil rights and welfare state.

I remember clearly my favourate chant
Left and right together - we shall not be moved
