Research on Controversial Subject Began

Chellis has begun the strong development of lasers and laser technology. Chellis has long apposed the line of laser technology, and while the civilian sector and to a smaller extent the military, have done development on more practical uses of laser technology, the time has come for chellis to work on laser technology in warfare purposes. Chellis has begun work on a new type of anti-tank rifle, a technology proclaimed obsolete since the information age came into prominence. Using the unique properties of the laser against conventional armour, we find that infantry should be able to take out even the most modern main battle tanks, in a well set up position with such a weapon. Chellis is currently not looking forward to joint projects, or even recieving help in this subject, as most nations deviate in how it works, and Chellis is a pioneer, not a follower. Initial reports of the Anti-tank rifle, the O-1, or Energy Weapon 1, is that it will fire a laser projectile approximatly 8mm x 176mm, which we view as a weapon capable of penetrating a tank, and hopefully damaging either crew, ammunition, fuel, or other vital systems. The rate of fire will be slow, and ammunition will theoretically be limited to 10 "Shots" before the gun needs reloading, and it will take about 4-5 seconds between each shot for it to reload. The 0-1 is set to have a scope, which will be an improved version of the scope used on the old Chellian HOMAR assault rifle, and will have options such as infared, night, daytime, zoomed, and a classified view simply called dynamic. The gun will fire the bolt at a speed of 1.2 kmps, and will also have limited capabilities as an anti-infantry sniper rifle, much as pre-nuclear age rifles were later designated as.

No, I's an intense, coherent beam of light. And if you want to hurt anything besides sensitive optics with it, you're going to have to pump a rather large amount of energy into it. Oh, you're also going to have to focus the light on as small a point as possible on the target, and things like dust storms and smoke screens will be all but impenitrible.

Most 'lasers' in popular sci-fi are nothing like real lasers; the majority little more than 'generic energy weapons'. Go out and buy a pen laser for $20 and you should have some idea what real lasers are like.
