intelectual war

10-12-2003, 15:03
Some (including me) might think that not being allowed to declare a war to another country can be quiet frustrating. It could actually be fun:)
Anyway, how about being able to declare intelectual war? That should lead to some interesting ideas and conflicts, and I don't mean rude or obscene.

What do you mean by "intellectual war"?
10-12-2003, 15:37
ooc:

Burberry do you really think you should be declaring intellectual war when you can't even properly spell "Intellectual?"

You know, it so happens that there are other languages in this world, apart from English. And, surprisingly, some people are not native English speakers. I can give you more details, as I think this is, indeed, breaking news for you.

OOC: Of course there are other languages in the world. But for the most part, the NS forums use English. Look at this another way. I don't speak Chinese but I want to have an intellectual war with a native Chinese speaker. Do you think that person will take me seriously if I mispell or mispronounce words in his native language? My credibility would be strained.

People who ruin topics by correcting small errors are assholes, and idiots, they think everyone should be like them and type perfectly. But as long as your post is descriptive enough, and understandable by english terms, it's okay.

OCO: Well, sure. But certainly you can see the irony? It's like the 98 pound weakling walking into Gold's Gym and asking for a benchpress war.

That being said, I wonder what the thread starter has in mind.

bet you went through that post again checking and correcting errors!

I disagree. I think a native chinese speaker would appreciate the effort you made to learn (at least) the basics of his language. And that, far from questioning your credibility, would be a plus for you in terms of image and credibility.

LOL! Of course I did, I always try to correct my own errors with typing.

Also I agree with Burberry there. One question Burberry, what language is your first language?

I do not correct small errors, personally, but I would like to say that I find it most annoying when people mutilate the language completely. For example, people who use '4' for 'for' annoy the shit out of me. That is not English.
Just wanted to get my opinion on that out there.
What was this post originally about? I forget...

OOC: To a certain extent, the natives will appreciate and admire a foreigner attempting to speak the host language. But that only goes so far, at least in my experience.

I'm wondering claytoria, have you got any idea what the word LOL means??
i see it being used all the time but i don not think any of you know the meaning and origin of the word.
Furthermore i am dutch and in my country we need to learn: german, english, french and a bunch of other languages. When i go to another country nobody even speaks english. And they do not appreciate it at all that i have to learn their language, i think that is unfair. And when they come to Holland they all start talking french and stuff, not even trying to speak dutch or english.

I used to be a bit of a grammar and spelling nazi, although I'm not really bothered now! As long as a post is understandable, it does not matter whether or not every grammatical error is corrected.

Romanian. I live in the UK now, among people who don't ignore me because I can't speak English perfectly.

And this could be an example. I could declare war to Eizen and provoke him or her to prove that (s)he's clerever and perhaps more cultivated than me (as I assume {s)he suggests). But I don't feel ofended. Hoever, I think a nation could fight, for instance, to prove that its "most famous writer" is more valuable than another nation's. It could be anything, any reason however stupid, however serious.
