The Memoirs of a Bygone Hero (UV Takeover of Wishik)

OOC-Okay, for those of you who like randomly jumping into conflicts, this thread is not for that. You see, my friend had a country (Wishik), but he got tired of playing so he gave it to me and told me to RP a takeover of it with my country (Unum Veritas). Wishik is now considered a region of UV, but I've had some trouble thinking of how I should RP it, but now I've decided. This will be solely from the point of view of Wishik and so it will be one-sided against UV. And for those of you who would normally jump in and send your own forces into the fray, keep in mind that this has already happened and therefore you can't commit any troops or ships or whatever. Any OOC comments on how to improve the storyline etc, will be accepted, but please keep the IC comments to a bare minimum.

A weathered old man, the commander of Wishik's once-proud navy sits at his desk writing in an old, leather-bound journal as tears drip onto its yellow pages...

"So much death, and for what? Our government brought this on us, and so the entire nation must suffer. Everyday I see men who I am sworn to lead and defend die at the hands of a faceless enemy. I can only hope future generations will learn from our mistakes, however I am beginning to believe there will be no future Wishik children. It has become obvious that the Veritaseans do not wish merely to destroy our government, but rather to play mind games; to force the entire nation into despair. The could easily swamp my forces at any time they choose, yet instead they sit off our coasts, like circling vultures.

"Oh God, how did it come to this? Just two years ago I remember striding through a harbor, looking at all the mighty ships of our navy and their proud sailors, yet now over half those ships lie on the bottom of the ocean and those sailors walk with bent backs and weary eyes. Someday historians will look back at this event and comment on my own stupidity and the lack of useful intelligence at my disposal. All our indications were that UV was only massing a small group of ships, and so I sent our carrier battle groups after the random massings of enemy ships. I could count on the fingers of one hand all my ships that returned. I had sent my CBG's against full fledged armadas, much like lambs to the slaughter. To say that they were outgunned is to put it nicely.

"The ships of Unum Veritas beat my forces back across the nation until they were within site of Wishik's shores. Now they sit there and reinforce themselves. A blockade has been imposed on this poor country and starvation is becoming an increasing problem. I have been forced to concentrate my forces in one area to keep open a "corridor" so that supply ships and planes can get through. The Veritaseans could close this opening at any time they choose, however they allow it to go on. Perhaps to give us some sort of false hope? But how can I have any hope at all when every day brings new reports of enemy ships massing everywhere? My government looks to me to save them and my people look to me to protect them, yet the people blaim the government for this catastrophe. What am I to do?

"Just yesterday we had a large convoy of civilian supply ships coming through our corridor. A fierce battle had raged for days as the Veritaseans had attempted to sink these ships and their escorts, however our men fought bravely. Finally it appeared that the enemy had grown tired of the fight and would allow these ships to get to our coast. Unfortunately this was not the case. The convoy was within site of the shore when explosions rocked the early-morning stillness. I rushed to the deck of my command ship to see the first of the supply ships founder and sink. The other ships and their destroyer escorts soon followed suit. It turned out that late that night a small Veritasean ship had layed several strings of mines throughout our corridor without our knowledge.

"It is because of things like this that the morale of my sailors has never been lower. They know they cannot win this fight, yet they have no choice but to continue. I have seen actions of bravery unparalleled ever before, however even such miraculous acts cannot save this doomed nation. Our military communication satellites have been disabled by land-based lasers and all civilian traffic is monitored by the Veritaseans. We can get no message to the outside world, but even if we could, who would come to our aid against so strong a foe? And even if someone were to come, they would be too late. Our enemy could crush us at any moment, but instead is content to sit and play mind games to see the effect they will have. Perhaps they wish to make life in this country so horrid that the people rise up and overthrow their own government and then welcome the Veritasean soldiers with open arms. There have already been several revolts in the smaller provinces that the central government has had to quell. How many more can they stop before they lose control?

"Our land based aircraft have been permanently put out of business and our shipbuilding facilities have been completely demolished. The government has ordered reconstruction to begin immediately but it is a waste of manpower and resources. The enemy's stealth fighters can strike at any point in this nation they choose. They sit still merely out of their own restraint. Already I have begun making plans for a final effort on my navy's part. The best I can do is to mass my ships as best I can and hurl them at the enemy. However what will that accomplish other than have the remainder of my brave young sailors go down to join their comrades?"

***This is only the beginning, more will come along with more in depth details of operations and the reasons behind this Veritasean blockade/invasion of Wishik***

Kilean

The Peoples Republic of Kilean views the situation in Wishik with a greedy eye. Recent reports have rated Kilean as having the largest military in its region, yet those billions and billions of thalers have gone to a force that has not yet seen a major war.

The Officers of the Kileanishes Heer have little combat experience, and their tactics are still but pure theory.

After a few tenative meetings with the state department of Unum Veritas- not asking premission, simply informing Unum Veritas- Special Action
Teams from Kileans Internal Security Directorate are inserted into Wishik's costal areas via small watercraft.

As they crouch amidst the beachside sand dunes, they see the ragged line of Wishik's ships left harbor on one of the furtive, directionless operations that had become so common of late.

The signal went out.

Kileans military is a regional one- although massive, the roughly 100 million strong nation has put (relatively) little money into power projection. Their small blue-water navy has barely enough resources to mount Unternehmen Wasserfall, but they do have enough.

The six ground-effect missile craft, refueled from Kilean merchant ships at sea, scream out from the open ocean. Normally terribly vulnerable to air attack, Veritasean destruction of Wishik's air force has left them free to work their slaughter. Moving at hundreds of miles an hour, the ex-soviet Lun-type missile craft* salvo their SS-N-20 "sunburn" missiles at the tired, beleaugered Wishik ships. The Kilean suprise attack on Wishik has begun.

"Operation Waterfall"- the english term for kileanish "unternehmen wasserfall" ends up to be the most spectacular part of the early phase of the attack- an out of the blue attack by high-speed ground effect craft using advanced antiship missiles against ships with poor matinence, and skeleton reservist crews- tearing into the naval group, but waterfall is not the only operation.

Kilean-flagged merchant ships moored at a mid-sized port city in one of the southern provinces of Wishik open their holds, revealing the men of the Kilean Naval Landing Force. Taking the local police and milita units by suprise, by sundown the port is in control of the brigade of light infantry that is the KNLF. Late that night, a squadron of Kilean ground-attack jets ends their long ferry flight at a small Wishik airfield, becoming the first KAF unit to enter a combat situation.

Kileans forces in the theatre are small, but their presence marks yet another dark day for Wishik. The world knows that Kilean has simply invaded to gain a piece of the pie. The news is greeted with celibration in Kilean, but in private the general staff are nervous. Veritas has yet to state an opinion on the kilean invasion, and likewise, the ability of Kilean to send forces to far-off Wishik is limited. Although the Kilean army is massive and well-trained, only small forces can fight in Wishik for the time being.

*note- not gomoding here, the Lun is an actual craft prototyped (although never deployed) by the russians:

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/row/rus/903.htm

It uses the ground-effect principle to skim over the water, moving at immense speeds. Its sort of like the bastard child of a boat and an airplane.

Given the wealth and size of Kilean, I think that operating a small squadron (6) of these, built in and purchased from Russia, is not out of the question.

Hm. Skimming the (awesome) short story, I must have missed that.

Really sorry about that.

Well, in a funny way, its sort of more real world this way, isn't it? some country calls everything a regional dispute, next thing you know every joker with an army jumps into some regional conflict?

Aah, I kid. Sorry for the over-enthused whatnot.

OOC-Yay, I got comments. Kilean, I'd love to make this more of an open RP, but the way I'm doing it, there's not much chance for that. I plan on doing something like this with another country that was taken over in much the same fashion, and I'll make that freeform RP. In fact, I think I'll go ahead and start that and send you a TG. Anyone that wants to join the UV takeover of Pink Pin Stripes is welcome to do so...it will be open, however this one will remain closed.

*okay, Kilean's response is probably being moved to the other takeover thread, so for those of you just joining this, ignore it*

"Another day over and I'm still alive. I suppose this I should be happy, but I'm so weary of this world. I can't handle many more deaths, other than my own. I almost envy those who have died in the conflict thus far; they've found a release while I am still bound to continue fighting by my own word.

"Today we saw a new facet of the mindgames being played on us. All last night a fierce battle raged on the southern end of the country and I began to think that this would be the last push UV made before overrunning us, however just when they were in prime position for an invasion, the enemy withdrew. I thought it was just a ploy until this afternoon, when I received news of a large explosion in the capital. Throughout the rest of the afternoon and on into the night I received word of several other explosions in other large cities throughout the country. It has become apparent that the Veritasean's push last night was nothing but a diversion while they inserted saboteur teams into the country.

"We lost another ship today while defending the corridor. The UV ships have moved within sight of our ships defending that lifeline, yet my men can do nothing in retaliation. The enemy sits there, silently mocking us, yet we can do nothing in order to conserve our energy and ammunitions. This war started off with battles happening almost exclusively during the day, but now the Veriteans will randomly take shots at my ships during mealtimes or at odd hours throughout the night, just to make the sailors aboard scramble to their stations.

"Despite the hate I am forced to have for my aggressors, I must still have respect for them. Those warriors have behaved with great restraint, perhaps moreso than I could have in their position. Had I seen images of my fellow countrymen being flayed alive on international tv, I don't think I could sit at a gun console, with the enemy in my sights, and not pull the trigger. Why did my political leaders feel the need to round up the entire staff of the Veritasean embassy and rape the women while the men looked on and flay the children alive? And what madness drove them to videotape the entire event and turn it over to the news media? It is the politicians who are responsible for this massacre. All those brave sailors' souls lie on those fools consciences and my only solace is that soon this will all end and the idiots who started this will die at the hands of their own people whom they were sworn to defend and protect."

"Outside my window I can still see our flag waving proudly. The pole is tarnished, no longer the gleaming beacon it once was. Sailors and soldiers scurry about with their backs bent and their heads down. The stiff necks and pride of youth has long since been ripped from their grasp.

"One of the saboteur teams the Veritaseans inserted finally reached the main power grid for the capital, and now the entire city is without electricity. Our 'brave' leaders have been moved to a secure location for safe-keeping. As if any location can be secure as the pangs of hunger and famine slowly set in on the people of Wishik. The smaller towns in the Northern provinces are already dying off, because food shipments were diverted to major cities instead. Of course I am still given the very best food imaginable, yet it tastes like sawdust in my mouth. I am incredibly hungry, yet the very idea of putting food in my mouth when there are starving children in this country sickens me.

"We lost another ship defending the corridor today. One of the Veritaseans' new Virginia Class Future Attack Subs snuck in close and torpedoed the ship before anyone had a chance to react. A torpedo boat tried sinking the sub in revenge, but failed. The only result of this attack I can see is that another 150 letters stating how the brave, but fallen warrior died defending his homeland against the tyrant invaders must be sent to starving, weeping families who could care less about the government of their homeland; they've become more interested in mere survival.

"A major shipment of food supplies and ammunition is scheduled to arrive tomorrow evening and I pray this convoy makes it all the way to the port. The morale of my sailors has sunk so low that when even a single supply ship pulls up to the port, they feel as if some miracle has taken place.

"I don't know how much more of this I can handle. The sight of my enemies, those who I am tasked with destroying, sitting within sight of my headquarters is maddening. The fact that I can do nothing to change it is already stealing my sanity. When at last the invasion force sets foot on the soil of this country and comes to find me, I begin to believe that they will at last stumble upon me, holed up in this office, pushing small model boats around on maps as I plan an attack against my already-victorious enemies. My sanity is leaving me, my sailors are dying or deserting, and my nation's future is nonexistent. The only thing that holds me to my post is personal honor; honor which is pointless and even as I write this slowly fleeing me and leaving me with even more despair."
