Trimaran Hull Advantages
Here are some advantages of trimaran hulled ships.
Reduced hull resistance at higher speeds resulting in typically 18-20% less installed power for an escort sized vessel required to achieve 28 knots
Wide range of propulsion options
Greater fuel economy
Improved stability and reduced motion.
Increased directional stability.
Top weight growth margins are greater. There are significant additional stability benefits in the area of growth margins. This will allow equipment upgrades during the life of the ship to be easily accommodated .
Increased deck area (up to 40 per cent) on 1 and 2 decks for a given tonnage, offering more space for hangars, helicopter operation and weapons. Some of the greatest advantages for the trimaran comes from the improved effectiveness of the whole ship design afforded by this very large deck area.
Improved sea keeping performance at higher speeds, operational in higher sea states.
Increased stealth - potential for reductions in radar cross section and infrared signatures. A reduction in heat signature could be gained be exhausting between the side hulls rather than conventional main structure funnelling.
The side hulls can be utilised for configuring a multiline towed array sonar.
As you can see, Trimaran Hulls are better

More information about the Skjold Class
The Skjold class of missile fast patrol boats is characterised by its speed, reduced signatures, small size with heavy weapon load and its littoral combat capability. The Skjold ("Shield") has an air-cushioned catamaran hull (surface effect) which, with waterjet propulsion, provides high speed and manoeuvrability.
Covert Operational Capability
An important capability of the Skjold is its covert operational capability in littoral warfare, particularly in using Norway's coastal topography with its islands and fjords, to carry out surveillance and engage hostile forces from a close distance while remaining undetected. The shallow draft of 0.9m to 2.3m allows the ship to access very shallow waters denied to other vessels.
Air Cushion Catamaran (ACC) Design
The ship's configuration uses an Air Cushion Catamaran (ACC) design, which is an advanced variant of Surface Effect Ship (SES) technology. The ACC is based on a catamaran hull with an air cushion between the hulls and has been successfully proven with the Norwegian Oksoy class minehunters and minesweepers which entered service in 1994. The low area of wetted surface of the hulls gives an improved level of shock resistance and significantly reduced wave resistance compared to that of a conventional displaced or semi-displaced hull configuration.
The elevated position of the magnetic components reduces the magnetic signature. The combination of the twin hull and water jet propulsion provides very high and very responsive manoeuvrability. Vital systems have been duplicated for enhanced survivability and the ship remains operational with one engine room set lost.
The low draft of 0.9m on cushion gives an advantage of access to shallow coastal waters and lower vulnerability to impact against surface or tethered mines or other debris.
The hull is of composite construction. The hulls are laminated inside and outside with fibre reinforced plastic composed of glass fibre and carbon laminates bound with vinyl ester and polyester resin. A scrimp manufacturing process is used in construction, involving vacuum assisted resin injection. Carbon fibre and carbon loaded materials have been selected for the beams, mast and supporting structures, which need high tensile strength, for example the support structures for the gun and the electro-optical and radar weapon director.
Radar Absorbent Doors, Hatches, and Windows
Radar absorbent materials have been used in the load bearing structures over large areas of the ship. This strategy leads to significant weight saving compared to conventional construction techniques of applying RAM cladding to the external surfaces. The ship's profile has a faceted appearance with no right angle structures and few orientations of reflective panels. Doors and hatches are flush with the surfaces and the windows are flush without visible coaming (edge of window aperture) and are fitted with radar reflective screens.
Senit 2000 Combat Management System
DCN International (now Armaris) and Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace have jointly developed the lightweight Senit 2000 Combat Management System. The system has been selected for the modernisation of the Royal Norwegian Navy's Hauk class fast patrol boats and for the first of class Skjold with the option of supplying a further six ships of the class.
The Senit 2000 combat management system uses operating modes for littoral warfare and is interoperable with tactical datalinks 11 and 14. Senit 2000 gives fast response to pop-up air threats such as helicopters or other aircraft that suddenly emerge from cover.
Kongsberg NSM Anti-Ship Missiles
The ship is armed with eight Kongsberg NSM (Nye Sjoemaals Missiler or Norwegian Strike Missile) anti-ship missiles, which have been developed for the Skjold class ships and for the Fritjof Nansen Frigates. The NSM missile is equipped with an imaging infrared seeker and has a range in excess of 150km.
The ship's short-range surface-to-air missile is the infrared-guided MBDA Mistral in a portable configuration. A twin launcher will be deployed on the deck or on a land site. The missile is armed with a 3kg warhead and has a target range of 4km.
The ship's gun, for deployment against aircraft and other vessels, is the Oto Melara 76mm Super Rapid. The gun has a burst-firing rate of 120rpm, firing 6kg shells to a range of 16km.
Gas Turbine Propulsion Engines
The main propulsion is by waterjet, which gives a very shallow draught and extraordinary maneuvering capabilities. The waterjets are normally driven by gas turbines but may also be driven by small diesel engines in order to reduce infrared signature. The waterjet nozzles can be moved independently to manoeuvre the Skjold sideways without side propellers or bow propellers. The Skjold retains its ability to turn through very sharp angles even at high speed.
The prototype has two Rolls Royce Allison 571KF gas turbine engines, each rated at 6,000kW (8,160hp), driving two Kamewa water jets. These provide a maximum speed of more than 100km/h (55 knots). The new series of Skjold class ships is being fitted with four gas turbines from Pratt & Whitney, two ST18 rated at 2kW x 4,000kW and two ST 40 rated at 2kW x 2,000kW, driving the two Kamewa water jets. There are two auxiliary engines, MTU 6R 183 TE52 rated at 275kW and two manoeuvring engines MTU 6R TE92 rated at 3,700kW.
Two MTU 12V TE92 lift fan engines, rated at 735kW, drive the air into the air cushion between the hulls. A computer controlled ride control system controls the air cushion at a 0.5m water column pressure.

Littoral Combat Ship - Frigate
©Copyright
The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is a fast-track program to develop a new, small, high-speed combatant for coastal operations. It is planned that the vessel could rapidly switch equipment for a variety of missions, such as coastal ASW, minesweeping, patrol/interdiction, or perhaps logistics. In this way the ship could perform a variety of missions, without carrying all the equipment for all the missions simultaneously.

Two workstations
Photonics mast workstation and Command workstation
Two displays on each workstation
Upper display for real time video
Lower display for real time, recorded, or still frames
A handgrip is used to control the sensor head, select views, select contacts, and take still frames
Additional information on the powerplant/propulsion system:
With the Astron Class submarine, we utilize an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system that allows the submarine to operate on battery power for weeks. Albeit, a nuclear powered system would allow us to sustain months, it also is nosier comprimising the main advantage to submarines.. and what they thrive on, acoustic stealth. Since the nuclear reactors pumps must be on, we developed the AIP. The AIP allows the submarine to submerge for weeks without refueling(snorkeling). This allows the submarine to maintain the advantage of submerging for a long period of time, without the noise.
Other Innovations:
[list]
Modular Isolated Deck Structure (MIDS)
The entire command center will be installed as one unit on cushioned mounts
Will utilize Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) components which allows for easy upgrade to new state of the art technology. Much cheaper then refits required for previous submarines to upgrade to new technology.
Fly-by-wire:
The helm and dive controls will be replaced by a four axis joystick.
Redundant electronic data buses operated by a fault tolerant set of processors to control the operator?s commands to the control surfaces.
This replaces the use of hydraulic controls between the ship control station and the control surfaces.

This tank was designed arround its main armorment, a 155mm high velocity cannon. This gun is the most important feature of this tank. 35mm bigger then the M-1A1/A2's cannon, the 155mm fires an extreemly high velocity round, that contains a powerful charge. A charge powerful enough to destroy an Abrams at 7 miles distance.
Cost is 3.5 million USD per unit.
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/leopard-c1_12.jpg
The Tiger is vertually identical to the Ocelot externally, with most diffrences being related to the engine and armor composition. The origional name for this tank was Ocelot T.Mk.2, but it was decided to make it a new type.
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/leopard-05.jpg
The engine in the Tiger is a 24 cylinder W diesel, developing 2,400 bhp. This large reserve of power is used to give the Tiger around the best acceleration of any tank ever. This engine is also highly efficent, giveing the same range as the Ocelot, but with twice the cylinders.
http://military-graphics.net/leopard2.jpg
The armor is where the diffrence between the tank destroyer and MBT is evident. The Tiger's armor package is mostly of light weight composites, with steel in small quanity. The purpose of useing composites is to keep the weight down, while the plastics themselves are over 5 times stronger then the steel that would normally have been used. This also has the advantage over Depleated Uranium of not being radioactive.
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/leopard-c1_58.jpg
The cannon, which made the Ocelot so desired, is the same. 155mm HV. The diffrence is, this time the shell information has been released. The 155mm HV cannon fires a green round. This green round is a Shaped charge composite round, with 55lbs of explosive contained inside of it. In order to defeat newer types of armor, a small explosive charge is carried on an extention on the front of the projectile. This charge acts to weaken the armor, literally "cracking" the armor, allowing the shaped charge to destroy its target.

The SH-60B has a large suite of electronic sensors including radar, electronic support measures (ESM), forward looking infrared (FLIR), and passive/active underwater acoustic devices (sonobouys). All of this equipment is networked into a centralized tactical computer allowing the aircraft to act as a distant and elevated platform for sensors, remote classification/detection, and weapon delivery. All of the information gathered by aircraft sensors are passed back to the ship via a high speed digital radio signal. Personnel located in the ship's Combat Information Center (CIC) can not only view the "downlinked" information in real time, but can also control many of the helicopter's systems remotely. This system extends the ship's sensor, tactical control and attack capabilities while minimizing the risk of counterattack or detection by an enemy.
SH-60B Aircraft prior to BUNO 162349 are capable of the antiship surveillance and targeting (ASST) and ASW roles only. Effective with BUNO 162349 and subsequent, LAMPS MK III are equipped to employ the Mk 2 Mod 7 Penguin missile. LAMPS MK III equipped with the missile can be used in the additional role of ASUW attack. This recent SH-60B modification incorporated the ability to carry the AGM-119B Penguin missile, giving the Seahawka potent surface strike capability. When used in an ASUW mission, the aircraft provides a mobile, elevated platform for observing, identifying, and localizing threat platfoms beyond the parent ship's radar and/or electronic support measure (ESM) horizon. When a suspected threat is detected, classification and targeting data is provided to the parent ship via the datalink for surface-to-surface weapon engagement. Penguin missile equipped aircraft may conduct independent or coordinated attack, dependent upon the threat and tactical scenario. The Penguin is launched at a surface target acquired on the helicopter's radar. Once launched it becomes a "fire-and-forget" weapon which automatically homes in on its target. The Global Positioning System has also become standard equipment on most SH-60Bs. Some LAMPS MK III Seahawks already carry Hellfire missiles and night vision goggles. In addition, funding has been allocated to retrofit all SH-60Bs in the HSL community with forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensors.
There are two data link antennas--one forward and one aft on the underside of the aircraft. The search radar antenna is also located on the underside of the aircraft. Other antennas (UHF/VHF, HF, radar altimeter, TACAN, ESM, sonobuoy receivers, doppler, ADF, IFF, and GPS) are located at various points on the helicopter.
The left inboard, left outboard, and right weapon pylons accommodate BRU-14/A weapon/stores racks. Fittings for torpedo parachute release lanyards are located on the fuselage aft of each weapon pylon. Effective on BUNO 162349 and subsequent, the left and right inboard pylons have wiring and tubing provisions for auxiliary fuel tanks. All pylons have wiring provisions to accommodate the MK 50 torpedo. The left outboard weapon pylon can accommodate a missile launch assembly (MLA) which is used to mount the MK 2 MOD 7 Penguin air-to-surface missile.
The magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) towed body and reeling machine are mounted on a faired structure that extends from the forward tail-cone transition section on the right side of the aircraft. It is positioned above and aft of the right weapon pylon. The sonobuoy launcher is located on the left side of the aircraft above the left weapon pylon. The sonobuoy launcher is loaded from ground level outside the aircraft. Sonobuoys are pneumatically launched laterally to the left of the aircraft.
The airborne RAST system main probe and external cargo hook are on the bottom fuselage centerline, just aft of the main rotor center line. Fuel service connections, for both gravity and pressure refueling, are located on the left side of the aircraft aft of the weapon pylons. Dual-engine water wash is manifolded from a single-point selector valve connector on the left side of the aircraft above the sensor operator's (SO) window.
The long strokes of both main and tail wheel oleos are designed to dissipate high-sink-rate landing energy. Axle and high-point tie downs are provided at each main gear. Fuselage attachments are provided above the tail gear for connection to the RAST tail-guide winch system allowing aircraft maneuvering and straightening aboard ship and for tail pylon tie down. Emergency flotation bags are installed in the stub wing fairing of the main landing gear on both sides of the aircraft.
Hinged doors on each side of the cockpit provide normal access to and from that station. A sliding door on the right side of the fuselage provides access to and from the cabin.
The sensor operator's (SO) console is located in the cabin, as well as provisions for a removable instructor/passenger seat, a passenger seat, and a litter. The ATO station is located on the left side of the aircraft cockpit. It is equipped with, or offers access to, a full complement of aircraft flight controls and instruments.
The overhead console, located above the pilot and ATO stations, contains aircraft system control panels involving circuit breakers, console/instrument light controls, external light controls, fire-extinguisher controls, engine controls, and several miscellaneous controls. The lower console is located in the cockpit between the pilot and ATO stations. It contains the ATO avionics, AFCS, and communications controls. The lower console is accessible by either the ATO or the pilot. The ATO's keyset is located on the lower console. The multipurpose display (MPD) is located on the instrument panel between the ATO flight instrument panel and a caution/advisory panel. The collective on the ATO's side telescopes to allow improved cockpit ingress and egress. In addition, locations are provided in the cabin for two fire extinguishers, two first aid kits, two canteens, a relief bag container, a crash axe, a map case, and a back-up messenger kit.
The cabin is arranged with the SO station on the left. facing forward. Most of the components of the avionics system are physically located in the SO console rack, situated aft of the ATO's seat, and in the mission avionics rack (MAR), situated aft of the pilot's seat. The SO console contains the necessary controls and indicators for the SO to perform the missions of antisurface warfare (ASUW) and antisubmarine warfare (ASW). To the right of the SO station seat is a seat which accommodates an instructor or, if desired, an additional passenger. The primary passenger seat is on the aft cabin bulkhead, located on the right side. The hoist controls and hover-trim panel are located adjacent to the cabin door. The cargo hook hatch is located forward of the RAST probe housing.

Photonic Masts - The Astron Class does not have conventional periscopes. Instead, it has two AN/BVS-1 Photonic Masts. Advantages of this are:
Non-Hull Penetrating
Includes low light TV, a thermal imager, and a laser range finder
