Nuclear Crisis Between Apolyton Axis and Assimilation Corp

Centralis

IC:
Address to the Centralis people by Andreas Von Weiser, Minister for International Affairs, forwarded to all major media organizations on the planet:

Fellow citizens of Centralis, and of the world, it is time for me to once again speak to you regarding the crisis between our nation and the fascist Apolyton Axis. With their latest threats, the Axis leadership has crossed a line: we have the choice of moving the line, and submitting to their domination, or moving them back across the line. The former is clearly unthinkable, so the latter it must be, one way or another.

Many of you, no doubt, especially those from outside this region, will not know what I am talking about. That is part of the reason I am addressing you now: that those from other nations may know the danger we face, and, hopefully assist us in overcoming it.

Some time ago, from among our old regional rivals in the Treaty of Mt. Gravatt - most notably the nation of New Sheepsta - and some others, a new alliance was formed, the Apolyton Axis. This alliance, true to its name, proclaimed itself dedicated to Nazi ideology, and, as its first action, demanded that the Assimilation Corp alliance, of which our nation is a member, leave Apolyton forever. The alternative, they threatened, was nuclear war.

We, of course, refused to bow before this blatant aggression, and remained in the region. Since then, the Axis has made numerous threats, rejected an offer of mediation by the neutral Kingdom of Wine (which we accepted), and recently declared its intent to begin a nuclear war against Centralis and every other member of Assimilation Corp. In response, we again refused to bow before their demands, and appealed to our allies and the international community for help. We now repeat that appeal, in the interests of peace and sanity. Though we believe we would prevail in a war against the Axis, both they and we would be desolated and tens of billions would die. Though the Axis may desire this, we do not, and we ask that other nations with some concern for human life aid us in ending this crisis, by whatever means necessary.

If there is a higher power out there, may they protect us from this madness.

OOC:
The origins of this crisis can be found in the following threads:
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=101325
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=101591

This RP has been moved to the NS forums in order to allow non-Apolytonian nations to participate. All nations are invited to participate.

For those who can't be bothered reading those threads, the speech above is a rough summary. For those who want it further distilled, here it is, in roughly chronological order:

1) The Apolyton Axis is formed, an organization avowedly dedicated to 'national socialism' and the expulsion of all nations part of the Assimilation Corp alliance from the region of Apolyton.

2) The head nation of Assimilation Corp, Pharaoh Gunsanroses, receives the following telegram from New Sheepsta, head of the Apolyton Alliance.

I tell you now. Remove yourself from Apolyton. Do not return. The Assimilation Corp does not trouble me. Our missile defece [sic] system is advanced along with our robotics division. If attacked we will retaliate with our entire strategic force upon the civilians of the Assimilation Corp.

3) The Kingdom of Wine offers mediation. Assimilation Corp accepts the offer, while the Axis refuses.

4) The Sheepstan leadership proclaims it's intent to launch a nuclear war if Assimilation Corp does not quit the region.

5) Assimilation Corp again refuses to leave, and appeals to allies for assistance.

Let's cross directly to the President, in the Emergency Conference Room at an undisclosed location in Karakas.

Brian Adams has just been elected President of Karakas for the second time. His silver hair is combed and he is sharply dressed, as always; but the weight of the crisis weighs on his shoulders.

Adams:

My brothers of Karakas; my cousins of Apolyton; my friends throughout the polyworld. I speak to you at a time of great uncertainty, a time in which all men will be tested, in which nations shall rise and fall, in which the fate of the world will be decided for a hundred years.

Brothers, cousins, and friends; I will not waste words. The actions of the Apolyton Axis are unacceptable, in this or any other time. By now you have heard and read the words of Minister Von Weiser. The world will know that he and I, Karakas and Centralis, speak with the same voice. The Assimilation Corp will not leave Apolyton now or ever. The Apolyton Axis must stand down, or be thrown down.

Brothers, cousins, and friends; the danger is immense. The prognosis is uncertain. The cost may be incalculable. But the price of freedom is never cheap. Tolerance of totalitarianism is no virtue. Appeasement of aggression inevitably brings ruin. There comes a time when each nation must make the decision to stand or fall; when every man must choose either to resist or serve.

This, brothers, cousins, and friends, is our time! The Apolyton Axis represents a gigantic step backwards. It crystallizes in a living mirror an abomination that all civilized men thought was dead and buried. Ignore it now, and soon enough it will spread across the face of the polyworld like a choking weed, and plunge all the nations into a thousand years of misery and horror.

Brothers, cousins, friends, behind us to this day we hear the warning voices of forty-five million ghosts, urging us to stand against the Axis now, to pay any price, to fight to the end, to never surrender. Hear their call, brothers and cousins and friends.

Address from the President to the people of Seran in a live broadcast:-

"My People, I condemn the actions of The Apolyton Axis, and with your desicion, i wish to aid Centrialis in this crisis, if war cannot be averted, which i dearly hope it will be, Seran will rise in arms up against the Apolyton Axis. It has Ideals that probably would not be tolerated in other countries, but when they start to put those ideals onto other countries, that is when the free countries of the world should rise up and stop them."

"You heard this news, Director?"

"The nuclear threat?"

"Yes, sir. It's serious."

"Damn. Why must someone always be pointing the WMD stick around, Agent?"

"I don't know, sir."

The Director sighed, stepped up from his chair to approach the viewscreen. Data flashed across it, and constant satellite feeds flipped back and forth. On another portion, there was a map of the planet, with orbits marked in an almost opaque wall of space clutter, but with the Kaukolastani Satellites color coded. He leaned against the screen. "We don't have the power to deal with nations of this strength, and the last thing I want is to bring the nuclear fire upon us... but we cannot sit by while some tin-pot dictators destroy us all."

"Sir?"

"Contact Centralis, offer our covert support. Maybe our Ionic Tethers or Pure Fusions could help neutralize the first strike capabilities. Offer them use of the Hunter/Killer Teams."

"Sir, do you really think-"

"Size is one matter, skill is another, Agent. We offer what we can, and our quality is not dependant upon our quantity." Director Kerrik turned to look down at another tactical display, this one on a table projector. He leaned over it. "We'll do what we can... but always in the shadows... offer them ISA help as well."

"Yes, sir."

OOC: This is considered a later time than other RPs currently involving Kerrik as a young man. He is now Director of the ISA and about 42 years old. This has been a technical reminder.

"We strongly condemn the actions of the axis, and will definitely back our SATO- and WBO ally Centralis.

We cannot allow the evilness of fascism to spread any further, and we agree: There is a line that we cannot allow to be crossed.

We made the mistake once, with Iesus Christi.

We wont make it again.

Our satellite defence network is of course available to Centralis, and i`m sure so is the SATO satellite defence network.

Nuclear threats are horrible, but we cannot, and will not, fail to face this threat.

This is a situation that demands but one thing: No surrender, no retreat."

Despite no further threatening actions (and practically no communications of any kind) from the Axis, Karakas' military and security forces remain on high alert as of this date.
12-12-2003, 04:52
We the member nation of the Apolyton Axis still state that our nuclear aresnal is at the highest alert and in 30 seconds could launch. Our army is at stand by to affect the invasion of Assimilation Corp assets in Apolyton. Our navy is blockading the Asismilation's coastlines and our air force is partrolling the border regions.

Any refusal for Assimilation Corp entities to leave the Apolyton region will be met with futher repreisal.

Any entry of Axis ships into Assimilation Corp territorial waters, or any attempt by the Axis at interference with Assimilation Corp trade, will result in the destruction of the forces responsible. Additional forces from Assimilation Corp members in the Black Pit of Charr are being moved into member nations in Apolyton to ensure that the seas remain open, particularly from the Empire of Patagon.

Centralis, as a former member nation of the Daiel Treaty Organization, we would be glad to render you assistance in this potential military conflict. The aforementioned alliance may have been dissolved, but Copiosa Scotia does not forget its allies. The following strategic defensive forces are available for immediate deployment to your nation, should you request them, and conventional forces can also be deployed if requested.

2 ABDFL anti-missile aircraft (18 hours)
20 Arrow III ABM mobile batteries (72 hours)
1 Defender-class DEFCLADS (1 week)

Copiosa Scotia: We would be very glad to have your assistance in this matter - anti-missile defences have the highest priority, but conventional forces would be welcome as well, and, depending on your wishes, can be deployd either to hardened bunkers in reserve areas or to similar fortifications near the Axis border.

An assortment of Assimilation Corp reinforcements have begun to arrive at the port of Adailton in eastern Karakas. The western border with Axis member New Griffith is in complete lockdown. Medium-range multiple rocket launchers have been moved into position to strike Griffith cities.

The government of Karakas reiterates its demand that the Axis stand down its military forces immediately.

"Are those Sheepstans mad?" someone asked, for the hundredth time that day.

"Quite possibly, Mr. President," replied Minister Von Weiser, "It would certainly explain a lot. Thankfully, it doesn't seem to be winning them any friends; every outside nation that has commented on this matter has backed us."

"Yes, Weiser, and let us be thankful for it. General Hawkwood, are the Midnight Sun systems ready for activation?"

"Yessir. If the Axis invades, they're going to have one big surprise waiting for them."

"Good. Dr. Graves, that new ABM system I authorised?"

"It's being deployed now, sir. Enough FAEs to light up every inch of sky in the country, and we've linked the launchers up to the main ABM control system. If the Axis launches, their warheads will be pulverised as soon as they hit the atmosphere."

"Good."
Karakas

High above Karakas, a Firebrand Alpha satellite floated serenely. The serenity was deceptive. Its fifty cubic foot volume was armed to the teeth. It was fitted with high-intensity lasers, radio transmitters designed to scramble guidance systems, and twenty pounds of micro-munitions to inflict close range damage. It was the crowning technological achievement of the Karakas space program.

But it had never been tested.

Nonetheless, it waited, it and almost two hundred of its brothers, beyond the blue skies of Karakas, awaiting the signal from the ground which would trigger their systems. Over the communications net, digital messages floated back and forth. None of them was the trigger, yet. Members of the defense establishment was speaking frenziedly. Apparently the nation's deadly rival, Kyralia, had offered the use of its airfields against the Axis.

One message shot past, so fast no human would have read it, had there been any humans that high up.

If the Western Line doesn't hold, there is to be no surrender. Burn the homes and salt the land if you have to.

General Westwater

Immedately after that, another message unit entered the central communicator of the Firebrand array. There were no words; its code was a long string of ones and zeroes that would have sounded like white noise to a human.

The Firebrand array powered up. Had any humans been that high up, they would have noticed that the status panels on the satellites displayed "All Systems Armed" in large red letters.

Mark Albert, the President of the Federation of Glorious Humanity, had yet another headache. He was seriously considering seeing a doctor about these recurring migraines. Either that or disbanding the Ministry of International Relations, the source of most of his headaches.

"Nuclear? You're sure?" he asked Frank Pierce, the Minister of International Relations.

"Yup, that big red button seems to be just too attractive to avoid nowadays," Pierce replied. He shifted slightly in his chair. "I say we help Centralis. This is getting ridiculous, and it's gotta stop somewhere."

"What can we give them?" Albert asked.

"El Dorado," Florence Washington, General of the Air Force, answered immediately. She was referring to an elite wing of Glorious Humanity's air force, now expanded to a thousand planes strong since their usefulness had been proven in the Emirates crisis. The squadron's planes, specially designed F/GH-16s, were modified with radar that would track smaller targets easily, as well as additional speed for running down fast targets. The squadron's primary mission was to intercept and destroy nuclear missiles in flight.

"We can give them ground troops too," Herbert Ablegard, General of the Army, spoke up. "We've got most of our forces at home at the moment, and no big conflicts that need our attention. Be a good place to test out PsiComm too."

Albert blinked. "PsiComm? Are you sure they're ready?" PsiComm was a newly developed form of communications. Newly trained telepaths traveled with military forces, and talked to each other with their minds, relaying orders and information to their counterparts in other units, who then gave the information to the commanders. This made for a quick and safe way to transmit sensitive information like battle plans. The problem was PsiComm was in its infancy, with barely two hundred telepaths considered prepared enough to do the job, and the telepaths were untested in battlefield conditions. They were noncombatants, and would see action rarely at worst, but war could rattle anybody.

Ablegard, however, nodded. "Gotta try them out sooner or later. Might as well now."

Albert nodded. "Alright, all of you-" his gaze took in General Allean Hanoway of the Naval Command and Director Harry Fox of Military Intelligence "-start getting together reports. I want to know exactly what we can give them. Meanwhile, I guess I send some messages."

The meeting adjourned.

The Federation of Glorious Humanity supports the Assimilation Corp in their defense against Axis aggression. We are appalled at the wilingness of the Axis to bring nuclear armageddon, and will stand by anyone who wishes to stop such madness from descending on the world.

Subject: Deployment of Copiosa Scotian forces

<begin quantum encryption>

By now, the 5th Airborne Division and the 4th Marine Expeditionary Division should have arrived in Centralis. I would like to offer a few suggestions as to where I believe our forces would be most useful. The 5th Airborne would best be kept in reserve, and ready for a quick counter-attack should the enemy overextend itself. The remaining conventional divisions may be deployed either to the border zones or reserve areas, depending on where they are needed. You needn't hesitate to put our soldiers in harm's way; in fact, the major generals of all four divisions specified a preference for the border zones.

The marines and regular infantry carry the HK G36 assault rifle, the paratroopers the smaller G36K. Additionally, the 12th Armored Division is equipped with 300 M1A2 Abrams MBTs.

Finally, the ABDFL aircraft can either be constantly rotated on 12-hour shifts, or both kept aloft indefinitely with airborne refueling. The first of these arrangements is preferable unless the Assimilation Corp faces a situation in which there is a very high probability of nuclear attack.
