ROOIVALK?AATTACK HELICOPTER, SOUTH AFRICA
http://www.eloptro.com/objects/desig/rooivalk.jpg
The Rooivalk is a latest generation attack helicopter
from Denel Aviation of South Africa. The South African
Air Force ordered 12 Rooivalk AH-2As, the first of
which entered service in July 1999. The helicopters
form part of No 16 Squadron at Bloemspruit Air Force
Base (near Bloemfontein). Final delivery is scheduled
in mid-2003. It is envisaged that the Rooivalk will
provide a key element in peacekeeping operations in
which South Africa is increasingly involved.
The Rooivalk has a crash-resistant structure and is
designed for stealth with low radar, visual, infrared
and acoustic signatures.
WEAPONS
The Rooivalk carries a comprehensive range of weaponry
selected for the mission requirement, ranging from
anti-armour and anti-helicopter missions to ground
suppression and ferry missions. The aircraft can
engage multiple targets at short and long range,
utilising the nose-mounted cannon and a range of
underwing-mounted munitions.
The 20mm F2 dual-feed gas-operated cannon fires
high-speed (1,100m/s) ammunition at a firing rate of
740 rounds per minute. Two ammunition bins hold up to
700 rounds of ready-to-fire ammunition. The slew rate
of the cannon is 90™— per second. The cannon is chin
mounted on the helicopter.
The Rooivalk is armed with the Mokopa long-range
anti-armour missile developed by the Kentron Division
of Denel. Mokopa has a semi-active laser seeker head
and is equipped with a tandem warhead. Range is over
8.5km. Rooivalk can also fire Hellfire or HOT 3
missiles.
Rooivalk can carry four air-to-air missiles such as
the Kentron V3C Darter or MBDA (formerly Matra BAe
Dynamics) Mistral. The V3C Darter has an infrared
seeker and a helmet mounted sight for target
designation. The Mistral, which has been selected by
the South African Air Force, has an infrared seeker
and range of to 6km.
Rooivalk is equipped to fire 70mm Folding Fin Aerial
Rockets (FFAR) from the company Forges de Zeebrugge of
Belgium with a range of warheads, selectable according
to the type of targets being engaged.

Mi-28 HAVOC, Russia
http://www.tribulation.com/images/mi28.jpg
The Mi-28 Havoc is a new-generation attack helicopter
that functions as an air-to-air and air-to-ground
partner for the Mi-24 Hind and Ka-50 Hokum. The
five-blade main rotor is mounted above the body
midsection, and short, wide, tapered, weapon-carrying
wings are mounted to the rear of body midsection. Two
turboshaft engines in pods are mounted alongside the
top of the fuselage with downturned exhausts. The
fuselage is slender and tapers to the tail boom and
nose. It features a tandem, stepped-up cockpits and a
cannon mounted beneath the belly, with fixed landing
gear. The tapering tail boom with a swept-back fin
has a flat high-mounted on the fin and a rotor mounted
on right.
The Mi-28N and Kamov Ka-50 are competing to fulfil the
Russian Army Aviation requirement for a night-capable
anti-tank helicopter, a replacement to the Mi-24
created 25 years ago. The Mi-28N is based on the
Mi-28A, a daylight helicopter first flown in December
1982. In comparison with the AH-64D Longbow Apache,
the 10,5-ton Mi-28N is some 2.5 tons heavier, partly
due to its more powerful cannon. In general the two
helicopters have similar flight performance. Two
Klimov TV-3-117 engines of 2,200 hp each allow the
Russian aircraft to show a maximum level speed of 300
km/h and maximum climb at sea-level of 13.6 meters per
second.

reconnaissance, forward air control, close and deep
air support, and day and night strike missions. The
F/A-18 Hornet replaced the F-4 Phantom II fighter and
A-7 Corsair II light attack jet, and also replaced
the A-6 Intruder as these aircraft were retired during
the 1990s.

The MiG-21 is the most built jet ever. Fast, small,
agile dependable (performance data), and above all
simple, it could be turned out in prodigious numbers,
and was. It flooded the skies above Europe, Asia,
Africa, and even Central America with literally
thousands of modern, deadly fighters. It has flown in
more wars than any other airplane in the world. An
estimated 10,000 (some sources state as much as 13,000

Union, it's allies and (without license) China. The
MiG-21 is outnumbered only by WWII airplanes and in
modern days only by one, the Lockheed C-130 Hercules.
First introduced in service with the Soviet Air Force
in 1959, it continued front line service for more than
30 years. A record equal, and parallel, to the

fitted with a single baffle open type muzzle brake and
a reinforced epoxy resin fume extractor.

Firing ports are provided for the crews' personal
weapons and a machine-gun mounting is fitted on the
left turret cupola with an optional machine-gun.
The G6 is equipped with eight launchers which fire 81

protects the crew against small arms fire and shell
splinters. The crew are protected against TM46 (or

front, and all around counter bombardment fragment and
impact by 7.62mm ammunition.
The driving compartment is fitted with large bullet

The RBS 70 short-range anti-aircraft
missile is operational with the Swedish armed forces
and has also been exported to 13 countries worldwide,
including Australia, Argentina, Bahrain, Brazil,
United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland,
Norway, Pakistan, Singapore and Tunisia.
RBS 70 MISSILE
The basic RBS 70 comprises the missile in a launch
container, a tripod firing stand and an optical sight.
It is operable by one and portable by three persons.
The missile is equipped with a solid propellant
booster motor developed by Bofors and a solid
propellant sustainer motor by BAE Systems Royal
Ordnance and Imperial Metal Industries. When the
operator fires the missile, the booster motor is
ignited inside the launch tube and the missile is
accelerated out of the tube. The control surfaces and
the four fins open into position as the missile leaves
the tube. The sustainer motor ignites after the
missile has travelled a safe distance from the launch
position. The booster is subsequently jettisoned.
The RBS70 has laser beam riding guidance, riding a
laser signal being beamed from its own launch station,
rather than being guided from the front towards the
reflected signal from a laser designated target.

RBS 70?ASHORT RANGE ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILE,
SWEDEN
http://www.ifrance.com/ArmyReco/europe/Suede/Armes/RBS-70/RBS-70_Suede_03.jpg
