Speed Cameras
Speed cameras were introduced to New South Wales in 1991 in an attempt to deter speeding motorists and reduce the number of road fatalities. Speed is involved in 36% of deaths and over 20% of serious injuries resulting from traffic collisions. How does a Radar Speed Camera operate? A camera is attached to a conventional radar unit. When the radar unit detects a vehicle exceeding the speed limit, the camera is activated. As a vehicle passes along the road and intersects the radar beam, the unit measures the speed travelled. Speed equal to or greater than the radar unit's setting will activate the camera recorder. A single photograph is taken which records the date, time and speed travelled.
