Candlelight Vigil

Unum Veritas
21-11-2003, 02:20
Following the naval battles off the coast of the Supreme Imperial Republic of Unum Veritas, the government has called for this to be a day of "rememberance and thankfulness" to all those who lost their lives. A candlelight vigil shall be held, in honor of all those (both friend and enemy alike) who lost their lives during this conflict. Representatives of any government are invited to attend, for this situation should be a lesson to all nations of the world.

"I see in your eyes the same fear that would take
the heart of me. There may come a day when
the courage of men fails; when we forsake our
friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is
not this day. This day, we fight!”

The Ships moved into position, leaving the 1st fleet behind in International Waters. Because of the current wars near the Agrigentian homeland no officials will be leaving there for the time being. Instead attending the vigil will be Admiral Giancaldo, Rudolfo Turtello, a Press Attache and the Fleet's highest ranking Chaplain, Tomaso Divino.

Corollan Park has been cleared out for the candlelight vigil. The High Chancellor of Unum Veritas will be speaking (feel free to add any of your own speakers you wish) to the assembled crowd from a platform erected over the lake. All lights within the city and surrounding areas will either be dimmed or off entirely in order to increase the mood of the event.

Krostovia's Chairman Karakov will arrive to mourn the losses of UV in one hour. God rest their souls. View them not as soldiers or sailors but of men as their countries.

Accomodations have been set up for all visiting dignitaries at the Highland Palace. Transportation, meals, etc will be provided by the Veritasean government during their stay.

OOC-Tomorrow afternoon, we'll start the actual vigil, so until then countries can still send representatives.

In a suprise move, the nation of Jahagyar sends a squadron of torpedo bombers to level the fleet.

Considering their are more ships in the area than you can count, all of which are at an increased state of alert, this would be an extremely dumb thing to do, especially during peace talks. Plus there's the fact that your bombers might not have the range, and the fact that a single squadron couldn't possibly level a fleet this size, even without the fleet firing a single shot (the bombers just can't hold enough munitions).

Who said anything about the bombers comeing back? We needed space in our hangers so we figured we might as well kill a few hairless apes while we were at it.

OOC-The ironic thing is that up until this point most nations didn't even know I existed...yet now it appears to be conflict after conflict. Also, my last post was directed at DT.

Chairman Karakov has been met at the airport (I have its name somewhere but am too lazy to go look it up) by the Knights of the Order of Truth. He was safely transported, via helicopter, to Highland Palace and is currently resting in the areas set aside for his private use.

They will be met and escorted in by a flight of F-14E Ultra Tomcats as soon as they pass over Veritasean territorial boundaries. (ie-over the water)

Excellent, then the Sukhoi jets can turn back for refueling and whatnot.

The jet passes into UV territory, still flying at mach 2 speeds.

The DT jet has been met by the F-14E's and has landed safely at the airport (I really ought to look up its name). The DT representatives have been transported to Highland Palace without incident.

Agrigento, that is perfectly alright.

I'm out for the rest of the night, but I'll post again tomorrow afternoon, and will start the actual vigil.

IC:
*8 PM @ Corollan Park*

The High Chancellor stepped up to the lectern that was erected on the front of the barge on the lake. Spread out before him were countless lights, each representing a citizen of his country. For as far as his eye could see, there were small lights. The local media had been told to back off out of respect, and so there were no annoying flashbulbs or videocameras. He paused to collect himself, before glancing down at his notes and speaking into the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, citizens of the world, over the past week we all have experienced a wide range of emotions. We have seen unparalleled valour, as well as unprecedented sadness. All of us have tasted the bitterness of mortality, and yet still we remain strong. Each nation rallied around its soldiers, but all the time desiring only their return. Behind me sit dignitaries representing almost all of the countries involved in the conflict, from both sides of the spectrum. Yet, I can bear no ill will towards any of them, for they merely did as best they could. But perhaps I should back up and explain.

"International relations is perhaps, one of the most challenging fields ever devised. It has always been about convincing another country that they want exactly what you want, in order to garner their favor. Over the years, the art of diplomacy has been invented to help smooth this process. However diplomacy was made by men, and like all such things, is imperfect and subject to the trappings of humanity. When diplomacy fails, nations resort to armed conflict to protect their interests. This is not always wise, nor compassionate, but sometimes nonetheless necessary.

"However, we are all here together once more, to salute the fallen and honor their memory. On my desk back at the office are the plans for a memorial to be built as a reminder of this battle. It shall be erected on a small island in international waters, to symbolize the multi-cultural nature of the conflict. At the center of the island there will be a giant waterfall, and inscribed in marble under the pool of water beneath the waterfall will be the names of all of the fallen soldiers. At the top of the pinnacle from which the water spouts will be an eternal flame, and surrounding the entire setup will be a flag display, with the flag of every nation involved permanently at half-staff. Soon the plans will be forwarded to all other nations, so that they may sign off on it and ratify it as they see fit.

"As a nation, we banded together during these trying times, however I now ask that you not hold any ill thoughts towards our former enemies. It has been said that one way or another we all fight for what we believe in, doesn't that give us some common ground?"
