Massive revolt at New Jupiter

Thunderstraat
20-11-2003, 01:33
Nations of the galaxy, I come before you tonight to announce that the Star Empire of Thunderstraat has been divided. The planets at New Jupiter have declared independence and slaughtered Imperial marines. Our fleet headquarters and main shipyards are there, so we fear for our fleets' mass-production capabilities. There is nothing we can do on the planet; our police offices were looted and burned, our officers slaughtered. We request military aid in engaging the rebel fleet. Please help. We do not know what evils these people may eventually be capable of.

"Would you look at this!"
James B. Cox, the new New Jupiter president, turned from the screens to look at his advisor's TV set. On it, the somehow extremely popular King Karl was talking.
...officers slaughtered. We request military aid...
"Son of a..."
"That sure puts a spin on things, doesn't it?"
"It sure does, Tom. We new they were lying, sadistic, unfeeling politicians, but never in my wildest..."
"Jim, we've got to put in a press release. If those Nuboer dictators get the aid of some of their imperialist friends, then we're done for. I don't think we'll get even minimal rights if they win again."
"My dad died fighting them in the last revolt. Shot in the back while he was guarding an airlock on the Shipyard World. They never, ever give anyone a fair fight."
"Shot in the back this time? I thought they called him something first."
"Well, it was in cold blood anyway."
"So, are you going to do the press conference? The wise advisor? God knows you did most of the work."
National Advisor Thomas Grant typed something into an IM box and looked at his friend.
"It never would've happened without you, Jim. It would spread a message that you're too good for the universe if I was on there anyway. Brush your hair and put on a tie. You're due there in five minutes."
"Five minutes? There's no way we'll get back that fast."
"We're holding it in the bunkroom. I'll try to get it presentable."

"Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Jim Cox. I'm the president of the United States of New Jupiter. We have almost bloodlessly overthrown the oppresive Thunderstraat regime, and wish to take our place among the nations of the universe. I am sorry for my appearance; I am on the command ship Constitution, in orbit around New Jupiter itself. Ten minutes ago we destroyed the last imperial ship. We've noticed that the dictator of Thunderstraat has released a message crammed full of misinformation and lies, so we've called a press conference to answer any of your questions."

"Who is 'we'"?
"'We' are the government of the United States of New Jupiter, currently myself, my Chief Advisor, Tom Grant, and a few mob leaders, preachers, freedmen and pilots back on the surface. The whole planet revolted with us, but they didn't pick us as leaders. There will be free elections once this state of emergency is over."
"What of the reports that you have slaughtered Thunderstraat soldiers and police?"
"Completely false. We didn't kill nearly anyone, just the governor and a few pilots, regrettably, plus those killed in the riots."
"What is your government?"
"Our government is based on the old United States of America, modified for space of course. We don't have a full government yet."
"Isn't New Jupiter the fleet headquarters for Thunderstraat?"
"Yes, we are. Fleet Headquarters escaped before we could get to it, though."
"What forces do you have ready?"
"Uh... That is classified for the moment, but we have more ships than we have men to pilot them, plus a giant shipyard that until recently mass-produced Thunderstraat warships."
"What do you plan to do with this shipyard?"
"Currently, we are building more ships for national defense, but we plan on selling it to a private corporation."
