The Shining Path
The MK3 Hoverscout moved slowly up the twisting hillside road, leaving an occasional puff of dust as repulsor coils would kick up a spent ammo casing or an old bolt or nail. The road that led over the Variente Pass was far beyond the clean and well maintained techrete conduits of Thalia City, and was little more than a pitted track of tarred pebbles and dirt. An occasional rusted hulk could be seen protruding from the verdant foliage of the valley floor, where some hapless traveller ventured too far off the narrow path.
The four gun mounts on the Hoverscout were manned by the ubiquitous Operators that made up the Uroburotian Defense Directorate's Operations Sector. Their loose fitting camo belied their strength and agility, and wrap-around vision enhancing units gave them an eerie buglike appearance. The MX42 quad-barrelled guns were all trained on the hillside above them, and from the partially opened rear access door, another soldier could be seen manning an automatic thermo-grenade launcher.
At the top of a rise, the Hoverscout slowed and stopped. Two of the soldiers dismounted and walked ahead of it, their pulse rifles held at the ready. The heat and silence of the usually buzzing jungle was enough to make one's skin crawl, and the dusty road made every exposed surface of Sergeant Krispin's skin itch. Holding up a closed fist to halt his partner and the following Hoverscout, he moved over to the edge of the road and dropped to one knee, his smart scope blinking to life as it tracked an unseen movement in the foliage ahead. He saw the gleam of a scope only seconds before he hear the CRACK-CRACK-CRACK of automatic gunfire. Instinct took over, and he dropped prone and was firing back before he knew it. The insanely loud BBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR of the MX42's firing back gave some measure of confidence, but that quickly dissappated when he saw smoke grenades arc out of the trees on either side and quickly obscure the road. Just about the same time that Krispin began to cough, he heard a hiss and then BOOOOOM and felt heat blossom behind him. Shrapnel whickered into the grass and trees, and then from out of no where, a blow to the side of his flak helmet that darkened the world around him and closed his eyes.
