(ooc: We are post-modern, but can interact with future-tech, as our main economic department is ground-to-space and space-to-ground trading. This fortress may seem like godmodding, but I can say with my best judgements that it is not. It is a defensive system for an entire region, and we put a lot of time and money into developing it. In no way can it destroy anything over your own countries, and it is purely defensive in nature, the exception being the ICBM silos, and the entire idea of this thing is to be an extremely strong deterent to attacking nations.)
5:30 RST (Relic Standard Time)
"......we stand on the brink of a new age, an age where we know that our skies are safe from the greedy hands of space-pirates, and the prying eyes of nations that would seek to harm us!" The audience cheers wildly as King Viktor Sileetris XIII (http://www.freewebs.com/nsrelicinfo/notablefigures.htm) addresses them, standing before a wall of concrete of almost unimaginable massiveness. The news cameras scan about wildly trying to take in the bulk of the building behind him. ".....as your spy satellites have no doubt already seen it under construction, I would like to keep this speech short and say that we are not attempting to threaten anyone in doing this, and that we seek only to make the world safer from power hungry military factions. So without further ado, lets watch some neat airshow stuff and party a whole bunch!" The crowd roars as a claw formation of Valefor 29A's (http://www.freewebs.com/bluebomber/storefrontaircraft.htm) flash overhead, lasers from the tremendous building slicing narrowly between them. The anthems of the Relic countries compete over the speaker systems and researchers can be seen crying with joy in every direction. At home, people accross Relic stop what they are doing to watch the spectacle, and internet chatrooms fill up with inquisitive and joyful people.
Today is truly a great day in Relic.

Megalith Installation (http://www.freewebs.com/nsrelicinfo/megalith.htm)
Location: Megalith Isle, inside the Great Relic Crater Lake. The crater itself is 140 miles in diameter, and filled with water except for Megalith Isle which is located dead in the center and is 20 miles in diameter. The outer rim of the crater is lined with mountains of around 4,000ft.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Facility Layout: The central facility is H-shaped, and the entire island is covered in supporting military bases.
Outer base: The island surrounding the H-shaped facility.
16 ICBM platforms
8 runways
800 sam sites
1200 flak sites
20-foot seawall
400 150mm shore defense guns
Underground hangers for 1600 planes.
Underground barracks for 1 million troops.
Arm(one out of four): The arms of the H-shaped facility.
5 Megalith Lasers(detailed below)
8 surface-to-space missile silos
22 SAM sites
22 flak sites
30 phalanx close-defense turrets
Central Base: The crossbar of the H-shaped facility.
1 Inter-Planetary Ballistic Missile Silo(detailed below)
4 Megalith Lasers(detailed below)
44 SAM sites
44 flak sites
60 phalanx close-defense turrets
The Megalith Lasers: Possibly the largest beam weapons ever made in post-modern Nationstates, they are capable of reaching out into orbit to vaporize almost anything; they are powerful enough to be able to effectively attack even future-tech surfaces, to discourage future-tech spacepirates from preying on our customers. The beams can also be directed against air targets in a cone; above 5,000ft towards center to above 10,000ft near the end. Anything that comes over the lip of the crater is fair game. They can cover all the airspace in Relic, but in no place extend into foreign territory.
Inter-Planetary Ballistic Missile Silo: At the moment we have only 10 IPBMs, and we hope we never have to use them. If it is necessary to attack a spacefleet out of the range of our ground-to-space missiles, we may employ these. They are, however, tremendously expensive and intricate, so they are only to be used in dire circumstances.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Power systems and armor:
Power systems: The facility is powered by 10 nuclear reactors, with 2 on standby. 8 square miles of solar-panels are used for day to day operations; the reactors only see full use during combat while firing the lasers.
Armor: The outer areas of the base are networks of trenches and bunkers, below which are armored bunkers for 1 million troops. The main facility itself is covered in a sloped layer of titanium reinforced concrete 30ft thick.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Population: while the base can accomodate and supply up to 1 million soldiers, typical operating crew is limited to around 250,000, who man the center facility, ICBM pads, and the airbases.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cost: The construction of Megalith was paid for by all the nations in Relic, as part of the CRDF combined funds pact.
In total it cost $14 trillion to research, design, and build.
Every year it has a maintenence cost of around $5 billion.
