I need to learn just how to wage war. I have a pretty good idea. If anyone would like to go through a fake war with me, to teach me, that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'll help you a bit. Me being a helpful nation and all

First, if your attacking a nation larger than you, you might want to get some allies to help you. Although if YOU started the war against a huge nation, people will laugh at you and call you n00b

Second off, you need to have a rough estimate of how large your military is. This link may* help http://www.esyn.org/SOTA/NationStates.html

OOC: If you people are always complaining about newbies not knowing what to do you should answer these questions.

How do you find out what percentage of the budget you spend on defense? Or do you make that up?

You make up the percentage of the budget. But you need to try and keep it realistic.

Yes you just make up your percentage spent on defence, you can use part of your antion's description to aid you, ie. if defence is one of the 3 areas mentioned then there is a good chance it will be in the 15-20% of budget range (i belive the current US level is 18% or so if that helps) but if it isn't mentioned then it will be lower. This of course can be ignored as many people RP thier nation as different from their main description.

The actual NS war can take a number of forms ranging from the "i'm pissed so i'll just declare on you and hope a Dec nation comes in on my side" to far more epic conflicts with a set end goal that has been determined by the participants (these tend to work best and far far more interesting to read, can soemtimes be difficult to follow but are often quite rewarding although have little scope for outside interferance).

Also things can differ in the level of detail, some wars are fought in the purely numerical sense while others are protrayed on a much more personal level. also attention to detail varies, soem have awesome detaila in exact units and feature all the logistics while others are straight action.

Probably the ideal war on NS is somewhere in the middle, for good examples i would recommend giving the (numerous) FPC/attica threads a look they vary wildly but illustrate soem interesting things.

The Sniper country/OMZ22 conflict and the WWIX threads might also useful as examples.

i hope this helps.

If you still feel the need for a conflict of soem sort to try stuff out give me a shout and i'll see what i can do. (perhaps i get a war mad PM who uses a war on a small nation to hide certain blemishes in his private life, just throwing ideas around if you want them).

It just sounds complicated.

Determine what your national budget is. This will help you determine what your military budget is. Make some posts in International Incidents or NationStates forums describing the weapons ystems and platforms you are developing and/or buying (make sure they're consistent- pick a technology level and stick pretty close to it).

Once you have this information, you'll have a rough idea how many troops, tanks, planes, etc you have. Try to avoid saying stupid things like "I send my entire military to invade your country". Be aware of the basic fact that it takes 10,000 men to send one thousand men into combat with a modern military (read most of the stickies at the top of the first page in the NationStates forum for more details).

Invent a reason to go to war. This need not be particularly in depth (or even valid), but it is important to declare your reasons for going to war. Make sure you talk things over with the country you're at war with. Agree on some basic rules.

There are no hard-and-fast rules governing war in the game- other than the rough rules we have developed among ourselves as we've been playing. It is all free-form roleplaying. There are a great many good war threads out there. As you read the stickies, make note of the countries who's posts were most helpful. Look for them in the various war threads. Send them telegrams with specific questions. These threads, and the stickies, will help you understand NS war.
