IC: Aide’s scuttled about the Hall of Marshals, putting finishing touches to the meeting room before the attending guests arrived. Four were setting the large square table in the middle of the Hall. Behind the head of the table was the Commonwealth crest. Another aide was up on a ladder, polishing the crest.
Chairman Sondar circled the table. At his side was Chief Marshal Croe of the Commonwealth’s military. He looked around at the Hall, taking in the Spartan look of it. There were no overt decorations here besides the crest, no frieze of the history of Vervun. That was not called for. The Hall of Marshals, named after the Commonwealth’s military leaders, was once used for councils of war in times gone by, but these days for peaceful, diplomatic meetings. It was, Sondar supposed, fitting that it would be here peace negotiations were sorted out.
He looked at the table. At the head, in front of the crest, was two seats; one for him, one for the Vice-Chairman. On the Chairman’s left was a seat for Lecumberry, on the right for Calladria. Opposite the Chairman were two seats for the other two nations in attendance. The aide’s were setting exquisite notepads, pens, jugs of water and glasses and cards with names, titles and nations on.
Sondar stopped before his chair, and looked down the length of the table towards the doors to the Hall at the far end, where he could see a reception room.
“The guests will be arriving, soon.” The Chief Marshal said, after a moment.
“Yes, yes.” Sondar replied. He sighed and looked down.
“Are you alright, Chairman?”
“I’m fine. It’s just…this is an important moment for us all.” He watched as the aides, one by one, finished their tasks and hustled out.
“Yes.” Croe agreed, nodding. “This is the Commonwealth’s time; to be noticed on a world stage. And important for Lecumberry and Calladria, too. There must be an end to their conflict diplomatically.”
Sondar chuckled. At Croe’s look he said; “I’m sorry, but I find it amusing to have a military man, especially the head of our armed forces, want a peaceful solution.”
“The last thing any soldier wants is a war, Chairman.” The Chief Marshal reminded. “We may train for one, we may prepare for one, but we always hope for peace.”
“Well said. Well said, indeed.” He sighed. “I just hope we don’t mess it up, Reginald.” His voice turned grave. “I hope I don’t ruin this for not only Vervun, but Lecumberry and Calladria as well.”
“I’m confidant you won’t, Chairman.” Croe countered. “You are an excellent peace maker, who can see both sides of an argument and find an option that nobody else can see, that makes everybody happy and all can agree to-“ He was cut off by another aide that hurried in.
“Chairman, forgive me for interrupting but the representative of Calladria has landed at Veyveyr Airport. The Vice-Chairman is greeting him now.”
“Then I must go prepare.” Sondar answered. “I will see you soon, Chief Marshal, hopefully with good news, and not to report that our own soldiers must be needed.”
“Me too, Chairman. Me too.” He nodded, but grabbed Sondar’s arm just as he turned to leave for one parting word. “Remember, Salvadore. Keep them talking. I’ve known far too many conflicts start up because people stopped talking.”
The Chairman of the Vervun Commonwealth took note of these wise words, then turned and followed the aide out of the Hall.
OOC: Ok, The following nations are invited to the Veyveyr peace talks (besides Vervun);
Republic of Calladria
Empire of Lecumberry
Free Land of Pablicosta
United States of Credonia **In attendance**
If you wish to be involved as a neutral observer, please telegram me for an invite and I’ll add you to the list. The key players will be Calladria, Lecumberry and Vervun.
To start with, the Hall of Marshals will be closed until all invited nations are in attendance. Until then, feel free to announce your arrival and socialise within the Hall’s reception room, where there is a splendid buffet and a number of high-ranking Vervun ministers with nothing better to do :P
Once everybody has arrived, the Chairman will appear to invite everybody inside the main Hall where the negotiations will commence.
Please note: security personnel will be stationed just outside the reception room and the Hall. Any violent behaviour will be cause from dismissal from the reception until the meeting starts, or if it happens in the Hall then expulsion from the Hall and a halt to the negotiations for the duration of that day. Remember, the idea is to talk, not to fight :D
