Begging of constuction of ballistic missile fleet

06-11-2003, 22:55
The Lima Been navy is getting a very big boost when it launches the Igor Leninlima ballistic missile fleet, it will include 6 Minsk class, 12 Typhoon, 12 Volga class and 24 Alfa class submarines. This fleet will cost 150 billion dollars to make, to be paid over 5 years, nearly all of the Navy's budget, and it will cost 10 billion dollars a year to maintain. it will hold 510 Sir Jono the second SLBMs any help will be greatly appreciated. It will be operational in 5 years.

OOC: Do you mean the same Alfa the Soviets operated which has a liquid-metal reactor and a titanium hull? A very bad choice for a submarine. If you do then firstly it's an attack submarine not a ballistic missile launching platform, secondly it has a liquid coolant which requires a heater to stop it from freezing, when it's docked you have to keep the reactor on - which is not normal practice for nuclear submarines - to stop the coolant from freezing, thirdly it is very noisy at high speeds and at low speeds is pretty average of Soviet SSNs, fourthly it's poorly armed, unreliable and it's unique sensors are hard to maintain and fequantly deffective.

Overall a bad choice of submarine for any role unless you heavily re-design or you just used the name for something completely different.
If your basing it on actual submarines though the Minsk is a design dating from the 1950s, so go figure how ineffective it is and again it was meant as an attack submarine.

The Alfas and Volgas are to defend the Typhoons ande MInsks, we did rework the reactor.

You're a nuclear power,anti-matter producing nation and your using a design from the 1950s as a missile launching platform which is gonna need more then a reactor to let it launch SLBMs. Have a look at this http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/russia/ship.htm it has information about russian naval assets, specifications, evaluations plus links to other places etc etc, have a look there and re-evaluate your choices.

I wouldn't use 1950's nuclear reactors on my subs. Not the best track record for safety.

Whoa, I'm gone for two weeks and Lima Beens has started to RP correctly? Has hell frozen over?
:P
j/k, actually I'm happy you've stopped godmoding.

no I didn't adapt it to an SLBM platform I just reworked the reactor for the Alfa so that it can defend the Minsk and Typoons.

Hello, this is just a note that your invited to attend Credonia's summit meeting to discus the terms of that alliance you proposed.

Have fun with the Alfa class of submarines. The Liquid metal drives caused the USSR navy quite the problems. Also, they cannot dive very deep.

I am having fun. Ad I said the reactor problems are done, and theres nothing better than 43 knots, (that is other than the Volga class which can reach 55 knots)

OOC I don't think he has been. His first order of business' has been super ships, nukes, and anti-matter... now this. Hmmm. This can't be just me...

Lima Beens, as you ally, I am recomending that you use more modern submarines. Try the seawolf Class.

Or, I would use the Akula class. They are fairly new and if you want to keep it russian..

no, it really is just you. He's doin good.

Seawolfs can't go at 43 knots. How fast can the Seawolf go? he Alfa is exelent in combat. We do have L.A. classes, but we prefer our Volgas as attack subs

Yeah, but once a sub goes past 20 knots it can be heard.

Also you have to factor in the listening capabilities of subs at high speeds. It's zilch, nothing, nada, zero. Because water is rushing over subs at high speeds, the sonar can't detect anything because of the interference. So speed is bad, unless you are completely sure there's nothing out there that can detect you. Short of having a psychic on board your craft (and it also depends on the psychic's strength), you're basically blind at high speeds. So speed underwater is not the best thing to go by. you want the sneakiest, quietest sub you can find on the market. You want a sub that is like a black hole in the water, sucking up sonar like dust.

There is only one ship like that on the market and that's an Ohio-class ballastic missile sub (762s). Read Tom Clancy's Debt of Honor for the performance capability, but the short version is, they may not be as fast as a Los Angeles, but they are real damned quiet. Quiet, my friend, is a submariner's best friend.
