Lord of the Rings RPG

05-11-2003, 02:44
Im going to be starting an RPG for LOTR. I will play as Pippin, and hte RPG will begin as soon as the four hobbits have been chosen as well as Gandalf. I am aware that many of the characters will die off somewhere in the BOOK (strees on the fact that we will follow the book, not the movie) and so I'll create some double-characters so that those who play will not have to drop out halfway through.

Post out of character to apply for a role, and to point anything out. If noone has a problem we might change the plot around a bit.

Here are all the characters that will be played:

Frodo:
Sam: Eredron
Merry:
Pippin: Marshmallowalia
Gandalf/Treebeard/GandalfTW:
Aragorn:
Boromir/Faramir: Ravea
Legolas: Buri
Gimli:
Ravea

I'll be Sam.

So, we'll just RP out the book's plot?

Yeah, we'll just follow the plot. We might change it around though, try to make it a little more interesting, if we can.

I'll be Aragorn, but shouldn't this topic be in the Nationstates forum?

I would voulenter to be Gimli, but it has been awhile since i read the books so i probably couldnt keep up that well.

Should it? This forum said that proper RP etiquitte is necessary, so I assumed this was the forum for RP's. I'll sign you up as Aragorn, and we'll see how it goes. Now, Kihameria, do you want to play as Gimli, or should I keep the spot open? Oh and if your character doesn't do any thing for a while (Legolas, Boromir) then you can act as Farmer Maggot or whoever until we get to Rivindell.

Hummm good point,i will think about it but yeah you should keep the spot open for now.

Alright. If you change your mind, then just say so. In the meantime, yeah follow along as one of the other characters, if you want, that is.

Make lord of the rings more interesting??? HA, can't be done.

That's not what I mean. We've probably all read TLOTR at least once, and are already used to the plot. Changing it around might give it a new twist, y'know? Anyway, if noone wants to change it, then we won't.

OOC: What's the point?

No... seriously.

If you're just following the plot of the book, then your readers would probably be better served reading the book. That's not roleplay, that's summarizing.

And if you're changing things around, then your readers would probably be better served reading the book, because Tolkien almost certainly wrote a better story than any committee, however talented its individuals might be, could produce.

If you're going to go to the effort, why not apply it to something original, instead of either rehashing or fanficking LotR?

What's the point? This is if you want to roleplay the book, if you don't like the idea then, then don't roleplay! You might as well say "I'm not going to go see TLOTR the movie because I've already read the book." Now obviously the movie will be a lot more interesting than an RPG over a forum, so once again, if you don't like the idea, then don't participate! As for Tolkien coming up with better ideas, I agree entirely. I didn' think for a second that it would be better than the original.

Actually, that's not what he is saying at all.

He's saying, this roleplay is pointless, because each character is going to do excatly what the character does in the book, and react the same way.

So, in fact, you are just rewriting the book, which most of us have read at some point in our lives.

The movie is giving us pictures to go along with the book. It's doesn't matter how many times I read Return of the King, I want to see what the final battle looks like.

As for this RP, just read the book, cuase that's what he is going to write.
