Inauguration (Open Semi-RP)

05-11-2003, 01:33
The scene is Belem, the capital city, and a small podium has been set up on the lawn of the capital building (OOC: I need suggestions for a name…). A small crowd of people are standing on the lawn, awaiting the speech of Thomas Harlan, the future president. As he steps up onto the stand anxiously, he is presented with a Bible. Placing his right hand on it and raising his left hand in the air, he swears allegiance to God and the principles of his country. And now his speech:

My fellow citizens, we are entering a new era in the history of our nation, and I’ve deemed it fit to christen it with a little prayer, and I ask that you bow your heads:

Almighty God, as we all stand before you in reverence, we ask that You will strengthen the commitment of our republic to the people, not only in the throng before us but throughout the land. Give us the power to discern right from wrong and justice from inequity. Allow us to protect all Your children regardless of race, creed or ideology, so that we may work for the good of the Nation and Thy glory. Amen.

Friends, these are turbulent times we live in, and we must be vigilant as never before. We must be careful not only to look out for out brethren but for those different from us as well. Our nation is growing at a faster pace than it has in decades, and we must be prepared for the changes that will inevitably result from it.

From the men who harvest on the plantations, to the men out on the frontiers toiling away so that we may all prosper, to the businessmen in the cities, we all have the ability to alter and refashion the course of this nation, for good or ill.

We must also make sure to strengthen our ties with nations both near and abroad, for the one thing we all share is that we all inhabit this little green Earth.

We are a young nation yet, and we still have a long way to go, but with the help of the Good Lord we will prevail throughout the twenty-first century.

Thomas Harlan, President-elect

(OOC: This is just an announcement that a new president is entering the executive office and we’d like to make peaceful relations with all nations. React to it how you want. And I know the speech was bad but hey, if anyone wants to make it better please do)

< WHITE HOUSE RESIDENCE, 8:03PM >

President Richard Gephardt
"Obviously, our ideals of the separation of Church and State don't get out to too many other nations."

Chief of Staff Leo Magarry
"Well, it is a different culture, Mr. President."

President Richard Gephardt
"Yeah... nothing says political freedom like not being able to get elected because you don't believe in the same imaginary friend as someone else."

Chief of Staff Leo Magarry
"That 'someone else' consitutues a hell of alot of their population. Besides you're a generally religious man."

President Richard Gephardt
"You're right, I am. On Sundays from ten to twelve. If you haven't noticed, there are no pictures of His Holiness up on the wall."

Chief of Staff Leo Magarry
"One quick call down to the Vatican and I'm sure we can get some nice ones to paste up on the wall."

President Richard Gephardt
"Don't test me, Leo. Have Mary draft a congradulations. Something like 'the channels are open to a friendly neighbor' or along that lines. Make them feel we care, so that we can all move on with our lives."

Chief of Staff Leo Magarry
"Would you like me to make sure that they put the whole 'make them feel like we care' thing?"

President Richard Gephardt
"You know, I bet there are lots of people who would love to have your job right now and there aren't too many reasons keeping me from giving it to them."

Chief of Staff Leo Magarry
"When you run out of them, Mr. President, just remember that I love you."

President Richard Gephardt
"Good. I like to be loved."

The two men enjoyed their sarcastic musings, then moved onto other subjects.
