More Piracy on the Fringe - Sol under attack.

04-11-2003, 05:06
Merchant Shipping near the fringe going 1000ly inwards on the 'west' side of the galaxy has been disrupted by heavy pirate activity, and is on the virge of collapsing.

A merchant ship launched a distress probe inwards towards earth orbit, containing information regarding what might be the largest pirate vessel ever built.

A pirate communications probe has been sent to Earth orbit, to transmit a message that they now control the outer fringe, and includes this message:

3 Gorgon class Carriers and 6 Tugger class Cruisers, and a new ship, never seen before by survivors, 1 Pestilence class Dreadnaught, are on the outer fringes of the Sol system, near the Kuiper Belt, with full cloak on, mining the Kuiper Belt objects under near complete cloak, building fighters, small capital ships, and munitions, for the oncoming attack.

IC:
Untill today no pirate group has ever tried to attack any NG convoy but in reaction to these alarming news further convoys to destinations next to the occupied space will be escorted by more than the usual two LCs and four DDs.
The Homefleet (1st fleet) will be made ready for possible battle.

We will not allow those pirates to take over control.

Commander Kees Shumacher was awoken by a blaring alarm. He stumbled into the bridge and loudly asked what was happening.
"We found a ship, sir," said a scared-looking underling.
"So?"
"Uh, sir, it's... dead, sir."
"We find a lot of those too."
"With tortured bodies?"
"What doo you mean?"
"I think you should see this..."

After Commander Shumacher's vomit was cleaned from the bridge, he sent a message back to fleet headquarters near New Jupiter recommending war on whoever would have done such a thing.

OOC: We don't torture bodies, we only kill the people. It is more efficient to just shoot them in the head.

IC (somewhat secret, depends)

To this date, 300 planetismals have been used as resources along the Kuiper Belt. A small shipyard equipped with a prototype cloaking decide is being used to manufacture medium sized ships, like Tugger's. About 600 Fighters total have been manufactured. Several constructed Tuggers set up bases of operations in other areas of the Kuiper Belt, and have been launching pirate raids using the manufactured fighters.

Some Heavy Fighters have been seen orbiting Pluto, and Charon.

OOC: I control a good portion of the Kuiper Belt, and am based there. The Belmore Family and The Snel Race are partially based on Pluto.

IC: "Radio message in from a miner," reported an officer in one of the control rooms. "It's a distress signal. They're not under attack, but some on the asteroids are exploding. They suspect mines. Admiral, what are your orders?"

"Dispatch a battle group to see what's going on and tell the miner pilot to get out of there," Admiral Henderson replied. "Send 6 Patrol Boats, 6 Missile Boats, and 5 Escorts. Let's find out who's in our territory."

IC: "Captain, there's nothing here," reported the sensors officer of the escort.

"That can't be, we were getting readings from here less than an hour ago that couldn't have been asteroids. Saturate fire where we last got those readings, laser batteries only."

"This is Admiral Henderson, currently in command of Pluto Fleet. It's good to hear a friendly voice. I don't think we need help now, but we may as the situation develops. A while back we detected some odd readings back in the Kuiper Belt, just a little outside of our territory. We sent out a task force to check it out, but recalled them when to reading disappered. We still don't know what they were. Fearing attack from the pirates, which had been getting closer recently, we deployed a good portion of our fleet. We recently sent out an escort to investigate similar readings around Charon. The captain decided to fire weapons at the location of the readings, and that's what you saw. It seems that they hit something, but they con't see what . . . one moment please." He cut the transmission.

"Admiral, incoming communications probe. It seems to be a request to settle on Charon. That appears to be what was hit by the lasers."

"Why would anyone want to settle on Charon? Whatever. Have a Patrol Boat take in the probe, and refer the request to Snel"

He switched the transmitter back on.

"Sorry about that. As I was saying, they seemed to have hit something. New data indicates that it may have been a probe. Once we examine the porbe in question, we'll know if it was hit. Still, the probe doesn't explain the odd readings from the area, and we can assume that something hostile, possibly pirates, were there. If whatever was in the Kuiper Belt and around Charon comes back, we may need your help. Not for now, though. Feel free to enter our territory though. The defense systems wo't shoot at you."

Aboard of the NGNS "Attila", flagship of the first flotilla.

"Captain, we've got multiple birdies incoming. Onehundred ... onehundredandfifty ... twohundred. There are two-zero-zero birdies on way to Pluto."
"WHAT! Where did they come from?"
"Calculating course ... calculated. They came from somewhere within this area."
A map of the Kuiper Belt appears on the display and a small area is beeing enlarged.
"Tell Captain Sarler her flotilla shall try to intercept those missiles if possible and inform IP about the incoming danger although I'm sure they already saw the missiles. We will move to this position" the Captain pointed at the marked and enlarged area on the display " and see what's hiding there. Inform both, IP and Space Command, about what we are going to do and change the condition to red!
Ladies and gentlemen, we are going to war."

The "Attila" and the other ships of the first flotilla head towards the position where the missiles were fired from.
The second flotilla tries to intercept the missiles but the ships can't speed up fast enough. Laserclusters pierce into the darkness again and again and some missiles explode. Anti-missile/anti-torp rockets follow but the distance is too far and the missiles' clocking doesn't allow a constant targeting. So only two rockets hit their aim.
08-11-2003, 01:10
The Captain of the Pestilence chuckled.

"Launch Full Invasion, Phase 1".

All of the fighters within range, about 450 (due to construction on the 'belt and the 'cloud) are dispatched and fly towards the fleet, with missiles armed. The two Gorgons fire their plasma cannon without targeting info, hopefully hitting the N.G. fleet, if not, hitting Pluto.

It is not long before news of this reaches LRR outposts. The Isaac Newton battlegroup prowls through space just outside the Kupier belt going nowhere in particular, although planning to visit Independent Pluto.

Aboard the Newton itself, disturbing readings were coming in.

"Voltaire, compute the trajectories of objects UO-334 through UO-534."
"Done. They are phasing in and out of sensors, but contacts show a trajectory twoards Independent Pluto."
"DAMN!!! BRIDGE, THIS IS SENSORS!!!! WE HAVE A POSSIBLE MISSILE STRIKE ON INDEPENTENT PLUTO!!!!!!"
"DAMN!!!! SET COURSE FOR INDEPENDENT PLUTO!!!!!! FLANK SPEED!!!!!!! ALL SHIPS, THIS IS THE NEWTON!!!! MAKE COURSE FOR INDEPENDENT PLUTO!!!!! FLANK SPEED!!!!"
"ALL WEAPONS ARMED AND READY!!! ALL FIGHTERS READY FOR LAUNCH!!!! CORVETTES ARE IN LAUNCH POSITION!!!!!"

The battlegroup, one of six, is a very fearsome sight. Its 30+ pocket destroyers, as well as cloud of frigates, some armed with long-range torpedos, others armed with flak cannons, are alone a formidible force. Added to this are about 550 assorted strike craft, consisting of the fearsome super acolyte, and Scimitar corvette, and five Abraham Lincoln class battlecruisers. (Dreadnaught sized.) Their antimatter drives are soon at full power, and the group accellerates twoards the IP system.

"Independent Pluto, Independent Pluto. This is the Isaac newton battlegroup. Come in please. Message repeats."

"General Quarters! General Quarters! All hands, man your battle stations! Pilots, man your craft!"

"Frigate group Delta, assume battle formation Yankee One Nine Nine. Power up your shields, and prepare for agressive manouvering."
"Weapons are on-line. Tracking systems 100%."
"Drives are within safety parameters."
"All battle stations are manned and ready."
"Safety and escape systems are ready."
"Lets hope we won't need them."

Aboard the LRRSV Mikhail Gorbachev, an Abraham Lincoln class battlecruiser.......

"Drives functioning within safety parameters. Engineering is fully manned and functioning."
"Thats good."
"Primary cannons on line."
"Point-defense grid on-line. Torpedo bays on-line. Missile bays on-line."
"DR-5783 to bridge, Plasma conduit A-8 repaired. I am heading back in."
"Roger that, DR-5783. Plasma cannon grid on-line."
"Prepare to engage."

From the LRRSV Isaac Newton......

"Unknown hostile ships, please break off your attack now. We will allow you to return to your homeworld safely. We will not fire unless fired upon. But be forewarned, we will not hesitate to defend ourselves and Independent Pluto. For your own good, please break off your attack." (Message repeats)

"Hell and damnation. Where do those fighters come from?" Captain Wallmann, captain of the "Attila" and commander of the first flotilla, asked shocked.
Then a plasma beam streaked the shields of NGSN "Attila" and the whole ship staggered.
The NGSN "Jäger" didn't have so much luck. A plasma beam penetrated the shields and the armored hull, causing a direct hit in the fusion-power-plant. The magnetic bottle of the plant collapsed and the ship passed away in an impressiv ball of fire.
"Helm, nintey-degree turn to starboard for all ships on my sign!
Weapons, I want a whole port broadside of all ships on those capital ships! Missiles and Lasers. They have to be taken out before the fighters come into range. I'm sure they will open fire as soon as they are. Prepare the active defense systems for lots of incoming targets.

"Sir, capital ships are locked as targets. All weapons clear for fire."

"Helm, turn now!"

"Turning. Thirty degree ... fifty degree ... seventy degree ... ninety degree, Sir!"

OCC: They saw the missiles, not the bloody ships. And if I recall, I was talking about Independent Pluto, not the planet pluto. And if I recall correctly, Indenendent Pluto is located in the Kupier belt. Not to mention, LRR is nomadic so we can reasonably participate in space RPs anywhere in the galaxy.

IC: The ships continue to limp twoards indenendent pluto. The few sensors still on-line pick up IR spikes in the distance, but the frigate crews decide to make for the cover of IP's fleet instead of waiting out in open space for the hostiles to reach and destroy them. (LRR engineering is not very good. A single frigate would not stand up to even two of the vastly superior and all-powerful Galactic Pirates fighters.)

In an area farther from the point of activity in the Kuiper Belt, the Dreadnaught temporarily decloaks and fires off 200 (the Pestilence class is a huge ship, in relative pirate terms) Skipper II Ground Attack missiles towards Pluto.

OOC1: Skipper II missiles are basically nuclear-tipped missiles that have small cloak generators, going in and out of cloak to keep guidance functioning.

OOC2: Five Civ Nat, i never stated i planned to attack, so how did you get this 'information'?

OOC: There's something called sensors and scouts... I have Meteor Class Assault Frigates patrolling the fringes of this solar system...

IC: A trio of Meteor Class Assault Frigates were dispatched to the Kuiper Belt to investigate the abnormal amounts of energy being emmitted from that area. In addition, the 3rd Carrier Battle Group has been activated at the Perseus Naval Base orbiting the Earth and has been dispatched to Pluto to reinforce the Pluto Naval Base.

But the Galatic Pirates attack took the fleet positioned around Pluto by surprise. The Admiral in command was not stupid and moved to counterattack...

About 5,000 km from charon, there appears a huge number of hyperspace signatures.

*Plays Psycho Killer, by Talking Heads*

One by one, the vessels of the Leonardo Da Vinci battlegroup rematerialize in normal space. This group is about the same as the Newton, except bigger. There are easily 700 fighters and corvettes, 150 frigates, 35 pocket destroyers, 6 battlecruisers, and, of course, the Da Vinci itself.

Aboard the LRRSV Leonardo Da Vinci.........

"General quarters! General Quarters! All hands man battlestations!"
"Weapons grids on-line! Primary cannons tracking 100%! Point Defense tracking 100%."
"Engineering?"
"All set down here!"
"Good."
"All fighters manned and ready for launch. All corvettes manned and ready for launch."
"LRRSV Leonardo Da Vinci to Independent Pluto and allies, would you be so kind as to give us a recap of the situation?"

Aboard the LRRSV Thomas Huxley, an Abraham Lincoln class Battlecruiser.......

"Everything's ok. Were ready for battle."
"Fighter wing is ready for launch."
"Engineering is all set."
"Helm?"
"Yes cap?"
"All set up there?"
"Aye, cap!"
"Repair bots report that they are ready for launch on command."
"But them on automatic."
"Aye. Repair bots, automatic mode. Damage is 3/3%."

Aboard the LRRSV Steely Dan, a Demios class Corvette (Frigate by LRR standards)........

"All systems functioning within normal parameters."
"Weapons on-line!"
"Roger that."

Aboard the 100 Super Acolytes of Red Group.......

"We are ready for launch. Systems checks?"

A resounding "All set" can be heard in the intercom.

"Ok, then. When we get out there, claw formation. Shunt power to drives."

The battlegroup prepares for action. Corvettes can be seen launching from the Da Vinci. The 10 corvettes carried by each Abraham Lincoln also launch and form up.

Multiple hostile contacts detonated on the surface. Not enough to harm the Node, but plenty to send plumes of flash-boiled nitrogen into Pluto's tenuous atmosphere, resulting in multihundred kph winds. Not good for any surface installations.

K.

The battlegroup begins a sensors sweep of the area, hoping to find the hostile ships. IR sensors are also used, but are not very helpful in scanning for cloaked ships at long range. They rely mostly on an extremely prescise and versatile LIDAR, which would be able to pick up any pirate ship that had to de-cloak. Visual sensors are sometimes able to pick up discrepancies in the visual image of space, but this only works at short range.

"Multiple anomalous IR signatures over pluto! Probably cloaked fighters or landing craft!"
"All ships in range, cloaked ships detected over Pluto. We cannot feed you targeting data, as the distance makes the signal harder to track. Snel Race defense network, be on the lookout for cloaked ships in your area! We will deploy a corvette group if you think it would help."

"Ready the heavy plasma Cannon!"
"Charging now! .4% and climbing!"
"All weapons grids are on-line! Fighter and corvette groups are ready and waiting for orders!"
"Prepare to engage!"

Aboard the LRRSV Duane Eddy, a Revelation II class Pocket Destroyer........

"All weapons on-line!"
"Torpedo tubes loaded and primed!"
"IR sensors?"
"IR sensors aye!"
"Destroyer Squadron Alpha, offensive formation 1! Prepare to form with the other groups on command!"
"DE, we copy!"
"Aye, DE!"
"Roger that, DE."
"Will do, DE."

(A squadron is 5 destroyers. When operating independently of a battlegroup, they usually are accompained by various models of combat frigates.)

Aboard C5-L, a Scimitar Class Corvette.......

"Pilot to gunner, status?"
"100% tracking! Feed systems 100%!"
"Engineering 100%!"
"Five group, prepare for launch!"

(Rather strangely, LRR's use of fighters revolves around protecting the core group from frigates and corvettes, as well as fighters. But all combat to this effect would take place not far from the core group. The fast, heavily armed Scimitar and Scythe class corvettes are used to conduct offensive operations against the enemy fleet. They are usually the gaurd for a wing of Thunderbolt Bombers, a craft which I forgot to mention thusfar.)

OOC: Going under the atmosphere would mean coming within a few meters of the surface. Not exactly the best strategy... Anyway, good thing all my stuff is below ground. : )

IC:
As soon as the Fighters came within effective range, they were met with a barrage of uvaser fire, going for mission kill, 500 gigawatts per 1/2 second pulse. And the good thing about laser weapons is that you can't tell where they're coming from. Charon went pitch black as all available energy was shunted into the defense grid, and the promised clearing of Plutonian space began, mostly by way of .125c 2kg tungsten/nickel kinetic missiles. 1 petawatt of laser/plasma fire was on standby.

'Heheh' the Captain of the PGS Thor said.

'So they want to play with Ion weapons, do they? Charge the capacitor. Bring us on the six of the Stephen Jay Gould!'

Over the low beam channel (extreme low beam, technically able to reach the end of the galaxy quite fast), what appears to be a call for reinforcements is heard, but it is in an unknown dialect.

OOC: The Thor is cloaked.

IC: Aboard the Pestilence

'Decloak and prepare Scatter Missiles. I want full shields! Prepare for incoming weapon vollies!'

The Pestilence again fires volleys of missiles (basically, think of the 200 prior missiles, but these missiles then open up and 10 more come out of them. Cluster Missiles.) towards the LRR fleet.

OOC: Each Scatter Missile will easily knock down a fighter, they have the force of a fighter smashing into something. Note that only the Pestilence class carry them in this number, and there are only two Dreadnaughts of that class so far.

IC: Near the surface of Pluto

'Fire Ground Clearers!'

OOC: Ground Clearers are basically mini-mini-nukes that hit the ground and explode downwards. We don't want to destroy the surface, only whats under it (my ships have been there a long time, we know there are few surface facilities).

The Wing Commander watched as fighters around him were downed, but rested assured that their weapons were armed.

PLUTO:: Nuclear detonations detected. Damage to outer layers. Shunting to deeper sections. Outer layers going off line. Preparing for sterilization procedures.

CHARON:: Comm link lost. PLUTO presumed disabled. Investigating.

Uvaser fire began to abate, but right only to allow for other things. Clouds of militry-grade nanophage began pouring forth from the scattered irises, concealing literally thousands of isomer bombs.

The nanophage instantly began breaking apart downed vessels, as well as any Fighters stupid enough to maintain low altitude. Once more, the aim was mision-kill as opposed to total destruction.

Once the isomer bombs cleared the atmosphere and were in metastable low orbits, they all detonated at once, releasing a neutron flux in the dectuple digits, not to mention several petawatts in gamma rays.

In short, enough to vaporize the entire surface, wreacking havoc with any vessels still within a few tens of meters of the surface, frying all insufficiently shielded biological matter within several tens of kilometers of the surface, blinding anyone stupid enough to look at it, and instantaneously heating the Pluto-side hulls of nearby vessels to exceedingly huge temperatures.

Sincerest apologies to those few others with the misfortune of being on the surface.

Meanwhile, a squad of ten Shadowcraft launched from Charon towards Pluto.

(OOC: What sort of cloaking is being used?)
10-11-2003, 04:38

"BRACE FOR EVASIVE MANOUVERING!!!!!!!"
"I'VE GOT A LOCK ON THE POSITION WHERE THE MISSILES ISSUED FROM!!!!!"
"SJG TO COMMAND!!!!! WE'VE FOUND THEM!!!!!!!"

The Dreadnaught manouvers wildly, surprisingly agile for a ship of its size. The Laser point defense cannons and close by flak frigates are able to take down most of the missiles. However, some of the cluster heads get through to the shields. The shields block most of the warheads, but still several get through, striking a plasma conduit. This knocks out one of the ships three heavy plasma cannons. (Think Somtaaw Seige Cannon, Homeworld Enthusiasts.)

"LAUNCH REPAIR BOTS!!!!!"
"ALL CREW, FULL EVA GEAR!!!!!"

Aboard the LRRSV Leonardo Da Vinci..........

"SJG REPORTS LIGHT DAMAGE!!!! THEY HAVE A LOCK ON THE HOSTILE'S POSITION!!!!!"
"HOSTILE SHIP!!!!!! IF YOU WISH TO ESCAPE INTACT YOU BETTER BREAK OFF AND RUN NOW!!!!!!!"

The battlegroup quickly powers up completely. The ships prepare to engage any hostile ships that decide to risk an attack. About 40 Torpedo frigates fire their ordenance at the origin point of the missiles. The LIDAR gets a reading of what the ship looks like. It is very similar to what was encountered near Gamma Draconis. But the battlegroup is ready. They are veterans of many battles. But fighters are witheld for the time being. Several wings of corvettes are launched, their fast-tracking guns able to take down missiles and fighters alike.

A wing of 10 scimitar corvettes are in formation with it, and they easily move out of the way. The Energy ball does do heavy damage to a trio of Flak Frigates which were not able to evade the shot in time. The entire LRR battlegroup is soon in full battle formation, prepared to give any attackers a fatal dose of plasma, light, and antimatter. Armed with around 120 Laser point defense turrets, 80 antimatter cannons, the best antimatter drive ever made by LRR, 6 anti cap-ship plasma cannons, and with capacity for 700 Super Acolyte fighters, this is a truly amazing vessel. [encrypted transmission to LRR battlegroup]

Congratulations on still being alive. Please transmit coordinates to us when the enemy is found. Reinforcements are coming from the Pltuo engagement and active defense duty. All in all, you shoulf have 15 Patrol Boats, 18 Missile Boats, and 12 Escorts watching your back. Please disregard unencrypet transmission.

[unencrypted]

LRR battlegroup, we are retreating. Good luck.

With that, the ships in the area start to move towards IP, but not very quickly.

"Thanks, IP. Your ships would he helpful if we were sticking around. But we are pulling back to a position closer to Independent Pluto itself. Closer to the core of your fleet, you see. Or perhaps we could pull into a single massive battlegroup."

Just then, a Sub-Etha transmission comes in from fleet headquarters on the Hugo Drive yards.

"Leonardo Da Vinci battlegroup, we are dispatching three Destroyer squadrons your way. They should arrive in about three hours."

In that case, we'll do the same. We're calling all craft to within the range of the defense systems, including the ones near Pluto. the SI3Ds alone should be enough to hold the pirates off for a while.

"Ok. We should probably consolidate our efforts and defend Pluto and Charon. We've got 15 more destroyers plus frigates en route to the area. If we can hold off for three more hours, we'll have reinforcements. We can also call in evac ships if you think it is necessary. But we will only be able to remove about 50 million people per trip, using maximum resources."

"I'd like to keep the fleet defending our area of the Kuiper Belt, mostly because if we did that we'd have guaranteed reinforcements in the form of the defense systems. If you think that defending the planet itself is a priority, we could send a force to clear out the fighters there. Otherwise, I think that the main threat are the cpaital ships out in the Belt and Oort Cloud, even though we've only seen two. Evac will not be necessary, and if it is, we can handle it ourselves."

"Whatever works for you. But our main concern is finding the hostile ships. We've never before encountered cloaking technology, so our sensors are not tuned to find it. We can do with short ranges and big ships, but smaller, and the efficency drops."

All that's been sighted near Pluto are fighters, and with cloaking, we'd lose there. I think that our best strategy at this point is to wait for reinforcements under the protection of the defense systems and wait.

The fighters near pluto, the remaining at least, cloak, and begin leaving the atmosphere. All capital ships and fighters in orbit also cloak and begin moving away as fast as possible.

The one Gorgon, the PGS Thor, was ripped to shreds by the barrage of fire brought against it.

The fighters and capital ships begin exchanging messages. This is what is heard:

-Fighter groups 1 and 2, prepare to dock-
-Docking... now.-
-Dock Successful.-
-Fighter groups 3 and 4, prepare to dock-
-Aye aye, docking.-
-Dock Successful-
-All remaining ships return to waypoint epsilon-
-Verify weapon is in place?-

-Pestilence to HQ, to you read?-

The LRR battlegroup continues to be on the lookout for any audacious enemy ships. Fleet doctrine does not permit undertaking offensive operations with the full battlegroup, so the cloud of LRR ships continue to loiter in the area around pluto.

AM - FM - Microwave - Infrared - Visible - Ultraviolet - X-Rays - Gammy Rays

OCC: Gravitational Waves. At close range or in open space, the gravitational sensors aboard LRR ships can detect the gravitational imprint that ships leave. And at close range also, the standard sensors can detect cloaked ships simply because there are holes in the senosors picture where no Microwave radiation is getting through.

And attican, wouldn't your EM cloaks have to have more energy than most stars and galaxies? Because with all the EM forcethat those large objects exert, we can still see them. Sure, light waves get bent as they pass close to an object of high electromagnetic force, but we can still, for example, see the sun. That seems like a little error there.

OOC: So, now that we are on the technology thing...

Tell me how a gravitometric sensor would work...

Also, I can simple scatter the EM waves, making it seem I am in many places at once. Plus, IR sensors are pointless in space, far too much spatial interference.

And don't make me play the age card. These cloaking devices must have some energy source! And that energy source, unless some mystic quantum phenomena which I have no hope of understanding, would have to run out at some time.

"How went the attack?"

Igor: "It was more successful than we had hoped for."

"Good."

A dark figure entered the room. The Head of the Pirates was a fearsome sight indeed. Not human, but rather, Bish, a reptilian humanoid known for their cunning and agression.

"You are aware I shall have more work for you?"

Igor: "Of course, my Liege."

"That will be all then. Dismissed."
