Taylor Class Frigate Announced

27-10-2003, 13:27
Freedom Country, planningto upgrade its fleets, is also developing a new Frigate. This Frigate will be able to swot fighters, bombers and helicopters out the sky from far afield, thus protectin the fleet from air attacks. It is strictly, and AA Frigate.

Building A Versatile Warship

The Taylor Class's primary role is anti air warfare. Ships and carriers, and the auxiliaries and merchant ships that support them, need protection against air, surface and subsurface threats, and the combat system to be deployed in the Taylor Class is designed to counter the full range of anti-ship missiles and aircraft. However, as with all destroyers and frigates, Taylor Class will be a multi-role, general-purpose platform capable of a spectrum of tasks from peace support and defence diplomacy through to high-intensity warfare.

Platform For The Future

At approximately 7,350 tonnes and 152.4m in length, the At approximately 7,350 tonnes and 152.4m in length, the Taylor Class is considerably larger than the Type 42 it replaces. This reflects the need for greater versatility to meet the wider range of roles the new ships will be called on to perform. Designed for missions of up to 45 days, the Taylor Class will be able to transit 7,000 nautical miles at a speed of 18 knots, and reach a maximum speed of 27 knots +. In addition, the ships are designed for survivability with revolutionary signature reduction factors for stealth.

Multiple Target Capability

Taylor Class will be able to engage a large number of targets simultaneously, and defend aircraft carriers or groups of ships, such as an amphibious landing force, against the strongest future threats from the air. Economical to Operate and Maintain

Taylor Class has been designed from the outset to be as economical as possible to run and maintain. Electric propulsion is a major contributing factor, while larger space makes it easier - and thus faster and cheaper - to overhaul or replace equipments and systems. For the first time, every system acquired for the ship is being selected on a through-life cost basis.

Room for Growth

Taylor Class will be designed with growth in mind, specifically to allow for the incremental acquisition of equipment fits to meet the changing demands of defence operations over the life of the class without major rework on the ship structure, and without reducing the quality of life for the crew. The design also allows sufficient margins to accommodate alternative weapons systems.

Combat Systems

The main armament for the new destroyers will be the world-beating Principal Anti Air Missile System (PAAMS). This capability represents a major step forward for the Navy, putting Freedom Country at the cutting edge of area Anti Air Warfare and ensuring that the Taylor Class can defend her consorts and allies for decades to come.

The new generation of missiles could be sea-skimming, high-diving, supersonic, stealthy or highly manoeuvrable. Attacks could come from any direction and in salvoes. With its advanced combat system, the Taylor Class will greatly enhance the ability of the Navy to defend its warships and other vessels it is accompanying from anti-ship missiles and from attacks by aircraft and land-based threats.

http://www.type45.com/img/downloads/webversion/webversion006.jpg

PAAMS

PAAMS has been designed to match and defeat the evolving threat of attacks from sophisticated anti-ship missiles and to deal with attacks by aircraft. It can control a substantial number of missiles in the air at once, thus making it difficult for attackers to swamp the Navy's air defences. PAAMS equipment carried by each ship will include a 48-cell Vertical Launching System (VLS) for Gnat missiles. Also central to the PAAMS system are the highly capable SAMPSON Multi-Function Radar (MFR) for surveillance and fire control, the FC1850M Long-Range Radar (LRR) for air/surface search, and the Command and Control system.

SAMPSON
Multi-Function, Active Array Radar

The SAMPSON family of radars combines surveillance and dedicated tracking roles into a single system. Sited high on the ship, it can detect and track attacking aircraft and missiles while providing guidance for the ship’s own missiles. It supports point and area defence against current and future forecast air threats in an environment of heavy jamming and land and sea clutter. Functionality includes long- and medium-range search, surface picture and high-speed horizon search. It also performs high-angle search and track, multiple target tracking and multiple channel fire control.

FC1850M Long Range Radar

This provides three-dimensional long-range air surveillance and surface surveillance for PAAMS and other ship systems.

Gnat Missiles

The mixture of shorter-range Gnat and longer-range Wasp missiles selected for the Taylor Class are faster and more agile than the previous generation. Exceptional agility is achieved in the ‘end-game’ using a lateral thrust system – commonly known as PIF, PAF.

Combat Management System

The Combat Management System (CMS) enables the command team to manage and operate the combat system and achieve the ship’s operational objectives. It will perform tactical picture compilation, threat evaluation, weapon assignment and control of the other combat system equipment, including PAAMS.

A Ship for Today and Tommorow's Navy

http://www.type45.com/img/type45/type45mainpic.jpg

The new ship will introduce standards across cabins, messes and recreational areas that are suitable for both male and female sailors, and improve considerably on current levels. With its improved accommodation and ability to perform a variety of roles, the Taylor is designed to meet the needs of a modern Navy in a changing world, and adapt to new needs throughout the life of the class.

Designed for Flexibility

'Room for growth' was a key operational requirement. While the complement is around 190 crew, there is space for up to 235, allowing for the transport of specialist teams and their equipment to carry out a variety of missions - whether military, para-military or disaster relief. This also allows for the Taylor Destroyers to fulfil other roles, such as assisting in humanitarian relief or civilian evacuation missions.

We very much hope that this Frigate will be a prime future addition to the fleet.

A most promising design and the most suitable choice for an upgrade as currently we are using Batch 3 Type 42s. The type 45 is most likely going to be chosen as a succesor to the venerable Type 42s and I look forward to negotiating a deal as well as possibly working together on future projects seeing as how we share similar equipment.

Hey you might awnt to edit, it still says Type 45 Destroyer where you copied and pasted. Anyway that ship lacks any land attack capability whatsoever which strikes me as f*cking stupid since their hasnt been a naval engagement (apart fr0m the Falklands) since WW2. Thats the problem, in the UK politicians run the military.

No, its DESIGNED as a fleet support weapon.

You know, several in every fleet to secure the anti air role.

Might work :)

I dont know a thing about naval so I would have thought 114mm.
