Watertest to increase defenses

27-10-2003, 06:33
(OOC: FYI Declaration, so I don't have some whiny Rper say that I'm godmodding my Imbreachable Wall)

Due to a need to increase the defenses of Watertest, the goverment is spending over 40 billion dollars to build a "Imbreachable Wall". This wall will be a number of defensive structures, that will be equipt to destroy any threat that arises.

Each Defensive Structure will contain

Barbed Wire
Tank Barriers
1- Pillbox
1- Portable Radar Site
1- 135MM Rotating turret
2- SAM Sites
2- 80MM Mortars
4- .50 Machine Guns
1- Underground Storage
1- Anti-SR Missile Site
Cost Per Structure= $1,120,000

Watertest plans to build 70,000 over a 7 year period.

Seeing as it is a building, I guess the inexpensive price is reasonable....

The reason I'm posting is actually to warn you against too much static defense. The last time an impenetrable wall was built was the Maginot, and it was outflanked and crushed by blitzkrieg tactics. Blitzkrieg tactics, I might add, are what my armed forces are based around, and I can say that my space capable dropships might be able to bypass the wall entirely, then make quick strikes against industrial sites. Conversely an army could land well out of range of your weapons and use guerilla tactics to wear down the nerves of the people operating such facilities, till after a few weeks they can make a huge rush and overwhelm them.

Be careful and remember the best defense is a good offense......

OOC:

1) I'm not a space tech nation, I don't usually RP with space tech
2) These will not be all concentrated in one area, they will be spread all over the country
3) Most will be near or at; my borders, my major cities, or near my military bases.
4) We plan to build 70,000, however I'm not so certain that I want to have that many people operating in a bunker. I may cut it to 20,000-35,000

We have had a simmilar type of structure in place for many years, we belive it recently stopped an invasion and forced our enemy to come to the negotaion table rather then set foot on our soil.
A pair of 25 foot cinder block walls 12 feet apart and filled with reinforced concrete blocked off all passages on our eastern border (we are in a mountainous region with many mountain passes)
We have
Standard Turret positions
Each position holds
(1) 125mm gun
(2) m61 20mm vulcan guns (for AA and antipersonnel),
(2) M-60 7.62mm machine guns
(1) M-2 .50cal gun
(2) MK19 40mm grenade machine guns
(1) 6 cell stinger launcher which holds (12) missiles without reloading
(4) AIM-9 Sidewinders
(4) modifed AGM-65 Maverick missiles
(2) Patriot PAC-3 sams in vertical launchers (on the wall on the sides of the turret.

Artillery turret positions
Each position holds
a single (12) place 220mm MLRS rocket launcher
(2) indepentaly targetable 155mm guns
(1) M61 vulcan gun (for AA and antipersonnel)
(2) M-60 7.62mm guns
(1) M-2 .50cal gun,
(1) MK19 40mm grenade machine guns
(4) Stingers
(1) launcher for (12) Maverick missiles slaved to the MLRS mounting
(2) Patriot PAC-3 SAMs in veritcal launchers (on the wall on the sides of the turret.

These positions (including labor) cost us $3.1 million to build for the standard and $4.9 million for the artillery positions.

We could sell you the design or build them for you.

(OOC: or you could use that model to better judge the cost for what you are making)

Sileetris makes good points about static defences... on a maneuvreist battlefieldand enemy will most likely choose to engage your forces outside of the engagement envelope of these bunkers.

On the other hand, these buildings spread out over the borders and strategiclly-significant terrain of your nation will massively improve the capacities of forces set to defend it. I'd make sure to camoflage them as much as possible (including consideration of aerial and thermal signatures) and try to keep their locations as secret as possible. These will increace your chances of forcing the enemy to engage you inside their envelope.

A sensible, if costly ( :) ) addition.
