Research Beginning in Kahta

The government of Kahta today announced a plan to experiment with building of the hull and most walls near the hull with pipes that are filled with liquid nitrogen. If a ship is struck by a missile and water begins flowing in, the pipes will freeze the water and prevent sinking.

Any country that wishes to take part in this research will be allowed to use the technology, but cannot share or profit from it.

OOC: Expensive...and the water might be flowing too quickly for the liquid nitrogen to effectively freeze it (the high salinity of sea water would make the freezing difficult even with still water, although it would freeze as cooling continued).

And it would severely lower the effectiveness of the armor. When metal is hit by liquid nitrogen, it becomes extremely brittle. A second shot in the same spot would then do a helluva lot more damage and probably strike a finishing blow.

Yeah, I understand, we are just looking at this technology as a possible solution, it would be to try to give the crew more time to escape or possibly even save the ship if the system worked as planned. It is still in the development stages.

We are still trying to figure out a way that the nitrogen will not hurt the combat effectiveness of the armor.

LN2 cannot freeze water fast enough to keep a ship from sinking. The LN2 would also make the armor VERY brittle, besides the fact that a missile would likely destroy the tubes. And how would you store enough LN2? Also, remember that LN2 does not last forever, nor do it's effects.

This technology is neither scientifically viable nor financially. You will have to abandon it unless you are willing to devote 200% of your national budget on this.

$8 trillion is a lot of research money...
24-10-2003, 04:10
What? Do you think it's cheap to construct liquid nitrogen hulls? The hulls themselves will have to be made entirely of Titanium or Platinum, which has never been done before.

my nation is always interested in scientific discoveries. last week we lost a ship a few miles off our coast. we are interested in any tech that would prevent another tragidy. i have assemblied a team of scientists and engineers and they should be arriving to your country in the next day or so. they also have a briefcase full of cash to fund this effort

full of cash? where did you get the cash, n00b?

ooc: look i am new at this. and what's this about a space station?what the hell is that supposed to mean?

Word of advice, have a seperate corporation within your nation construct the space station instead of spending your nation's budget on it.

This worked for us by having the Lunar Corporation build a space station around the moon. Project 'Sunlight' was made without costing the UNSC nations budget a single credit.

Oh btw, Liquid nitrogen leaking into the water? Not very safe if you ask us.

I know. We are still testing this, its a well known fact in the business world that only 1 out of every 10 projects succeed. We are still working on this.

It will not take 200% of my budget. It might be viable of enough testing is done, but then again, it might collapse.

Platinum or Titanium? I think that if a system was designed correctly it could have regular steel armor, IF it was made right.

We will be doing research into this, but it is unlikley it will do any harm. The nitrogen would just fertilize the water.

bump.

nitrogen armor has been found to be unfeasible. We will, however be looking into using it in weapons.
