Massive protests outside UN headquarters

19-10-2003, 15:34
Following the passing of the UN 'Global AIDS Initiative' resolution which resulted in the United World States's economy falling from 'Powerhouse' to 'Good', thus causing thousands to lose their jobs, and is believed to have something to do with the UWS being referred to as a <spit>'Democratic Socialists'<spit> state, massive protests have broken out nationwide, especially in front of the local UN headquarters.

Protesters yelled insults and chanted anti-UN slogans. In addition, at least one UN flag was burned amidst the chaos. So far, the UWS government has not officially acted, although there are rumors that it has supplied protesters with rotten eggs and old vegetables which were subsequently thrown into the UN compound.

We fully support the UN Proposal, and will wire $20,000 to the first organization that march in the United World States in support of it.

Our economy did not fall, and our UN category was not affected.

"Oh dear, he economy has imploded," mumbled President George W. Shrub, "and I'll have to curb government spending big time. Now how am I going to tell my administration the bad news? Hmmmm... I think I'll start with my VP." He then went over to the videophone and dialled a number.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Dayney. This is Shrub. How's your undisclosed location?"

"It's warm and nice, and I'm getting lots of popcorn," replied Vice President Dick Dayney. "But I can see tanks and military personnel outside."

"You must be at a military base then. Now, I have bad news."

"What?" queried Dayney.

"Wwwwweeeeelllllllll, the economy just collapsed because of that UN 'Global AIDS Initiative' resolution, so we'll have to cut your beer and pretzel supply by 45%. You'll still get the same amount of chips though," said Shrub.

"What?! Nooooooooooooo!!!!!"

Suddenly, a voice said "What's this I hear about the economy?"

Shrub hurriedly turned off the videophone and turned around. Right in front of him was Secretary of Defense Donald Cokesfeld. Shrub tried not to look worried. "Uhhhhh... due to the 'Global AIDS initiative' UN resolution, the economy just crashed, so we'll have to cut defense spending by 75%."

"WHAT??!!" yelled Cokesfeld. "But didn't you vote for that resolution?"

"Umm...yeah, but I didn't realise the economic consequences would be so bad," Shrub said, breaking into a sweat.

"I'll strangle you for cutting defense spending! Rarr!", yelled Cokesfeld, lunging at Shrub. The Top Secret Service held him back while Shrub took cover behind a desk.

"Hey, don't blame me," Shrub said weakly. "I had to reduce funding everywhere, thanks to that GAI resolution."

"So the UN is to blame?" fumed Cokesfeld.

"Sorta."

"I'll teach them to do this to me! Rarr!" yelled Cokesfeld, running out of the room.

Shortly into the lunch break at the UWS headquarters in the UN, gunfire was heard outside the HQ, and numerous 5.56mm bullets came through the walls, as well as some .44 magnum rounds. UN personnel came running out of the building, including the UN envoy. They were shocked to see that the gunman was Cokesfeld, in his Buick. Cokesfeld then gave the startled envoy the finger before speeding off.

At a press conference, President Shrub said he disagreed with Cokesfeld doing a drive-by shooting of the UN headquarters, but said:
"There is room for all sorts of opinion in my administration."

Five independant citizens, accepting Feline's offer, form the organization "Mercenaries In Support of the Global AIDS Initiative" and fly to the UWS to protest in the capital city. While not being soldiers of fortune, as is the popular interpretation of the word mercenary, mercenary describes them well as, being from a non-UN member country, they do not really care one way or another about the resolution, but are more than a little interested in the money.

We clarify that the money must be used for purposes of organizing a larger protest, and send the money.

"Well... We just spent five hundred bucks a piece flying here... And now we find the money has to be used to organize a larger protest." Mark looked around the table in the McDonalds in which they were holding the little meeting. "We're now five hundred bucks in the hole, although we do have twenty grand to start a protest. I say why the hell not? We'll keep two and a half grand to get us home - how can they fault us for that - and the rest? Well... Steve, you get down to the nearest grocery store and start buying eggs. Re, you get some signs made up... Ray, it'll be up to you to do the advertising, and Fred, I want you to help Ray. We need to get as many people as we can to this protest. I'll buy the tickets, and pay for our stay here. We'll each have a quarter of the money to do our jobs with, so Ray... I don't care if you go around promising people a dollar to come to our demonstration... Just get them there."

Nope, we don't want them. They are welcome as tourists though.

We wire the money for their return tickets out of generousity, and out of wanting to see all the money go to a protest.

The protests are swelling. Several people have tried to climb over the wall and get into the headquarters. Also,an F-117 belonging to the UWSAF is said to be behaving suspiciously over the HQ. It is believed that the F-117 is carrying a payload of 4 GBU-29 JDAMs.

And so the five set out about their jobs of working out how to get people to the protest... In fact, the protest ended up being a good deal more than five thousand people, as Ray had taken Mark's words to heart and had gone downtown to pay people a dollar a head to go protest. As a result, a disproportionate number of the initial protestors were homeless people, but after the rally got started, people began to join. Whether it was because they agreed with the message or because they simply wanted to shout slogans and throw eggs, Mark couldn't tell you. All he could say was that the priviledge of spending twenty thousand dollars of someone else's money to cause that much chaos was worth his five hundred.

The UN HQ had been surrounded with APCs (25) and military personnel (800). What's more, many windows have been broken by rioters throwing stones and using slingshots.

The demonstrations have become so out of control that the government intends to appease them by going ahead and dropping a JDAM on the UN headquarters.

Do not dare bomb UN headquarters [I'm still unsure of how it was decided that the UN HQ is in your country, but that's beside the point]. If you were to bomb a UN HQ, the outcry would be enormous and you would not retain your autonomy for very long; just keep that in mind.

OOC:If I'm not mistaken in RL the UN keeps a sort of HQ in every member nation, although its main HQ is in New York. That's probably how it works in NS too.

In accordance with world opinion, the F-117 has withdrawn. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), a new problem has arised. Several people have managed to get over the wall, and have knocked out the incompetent guards and stole their guns (8 Beretta 9mms and 3 AK-47s). They then opened the gates of the UN headquarters, resulting in a flash flood of protesters spilling into the compound. The remaining UN staff have locked all the doors and taken cover inside the building, but we are sure at least someone is going to try and pick the locks.
