Edolian Cartographers’ Guild Press Briefing; October 4th, 2003
Acting President Adolf von Wettiburg
“Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Four days ago, I received word from one of our colleagues, a man by the name of Laeran von Acksiburg that a strange volcanic island was discovered off the coast of Edolia. A team of explorers were sent to investigate and concluded that the island had recently risen from the ocean. Looking over our records, we believe that it was related to a small seismic shift that we had detected three days earlier. At the time, the shift was noted but it was too small to warrant much attention and little notice was paid it. We still cannot understand the causes for its rising and the island, dubbed “Lucia” by its discoverers is something of an anomaly. Now… any questions?”

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Earlier today I received a call from my associate, Charles von Zetaburg that three seismologists working at the summit of Mt. Lucia were killed in a rock collapse. Though our condolences go out of the families of those killed, I have called this meeting to discuss a far more intriguing issue. The rock collapse that killed our four scientists also opened up a chasm in the mountain, leading to a deep chamber. Preliminary teams have not yet been able to gauge the full distance or scope of this chasm but it seems to be quite extensive. An expedition of four is being prepared to explore the inside of the cave. Now, on to questions.”

“Good evening. Seven hours ago, our team from Mt. Lucia returned with their report from the inside of the volcano. They described a cave complex extending for hundreds of kilometers and some of the pictures they took are absolutely extraordinary. They describe cavernous rooms and dozens of tunnels leading off in all directions. The cave also contains some of the most incredible giant crystal formations that we have ever encountered. A second, larger team is being sent to explore one of the largest tunnels in the cave system. They will depart in a matter of days.”

“I bring both sad and exciting news. Earlier today, our team of explorers in Mt. Lucia encountered what they described as an ‘underground electrical storm’ emanating from a group of crystals. After approaching the formation to investigate, a number of team members were struck and killed by shards of electricity. The team began returning to base but after four minutes, we lost all contact with them. The last message they sent regarded a strange “presence” in the caves. There are also indications that members of the group were under attack by something. The Edolian government has announced that it is dispatching a force of soldiers to guard Mt. Lucia and has asked that we assemble a multinational team to investigate and fully map the cave system. The team will be lead by myself. Also along will be seven more Edolians. Two soldiers, Colonel Joshua von Gillian and Major Andres von Lisenburg will provide security. The former, a member of the Edolian Hellenic Corps is an expert in demolitions and the latter, a member in the Edolian Imperial Guard is considered one of the world’s finest close-combat fighters. We will also be sending Thomas von Blatterschplitt, a distant relative of the Imperator and one of the world’s foremost experts on underground cave complexes. His wife, Lilia von Endelburg is a leading specialist in underground plant growth. Finally, porters Gigi von Lesurn, Karish von Lapis and Fonway von Islandia will be accompanying the team as porters. We are calling upon nations to send their best men and women to accompany this expedition. Though the expedition will be dangerous and some may lose their lives, I believe that the scientific benefit will be truly invaluable.”
<<OOC: Alright. I’m trying to form a general adventure RP. There will be some combat (I don’t want to spoil anything by revealing too much) and a good deal of danger for our explorers. I’m looking for around five or so other nations to send perhaps three to five people each consisting of scientists, soldiers, explorers, spies for foreign governments, etc. Please give a good description of their skills.
I’m also asking that only good RPers get involved. One of the requirements is that people post using complete, grammatically correct sentences. No unpunctuated, lowercase mishmashes of misspelled words and emoticons. Those are just annoying. Also, posts should be generally long and detailed, not “And Amelia says ‘Let’s check out that cave complex!’” Conversation doesn’t matter so much.
I should also make a few points on the world that we’re playing in. I like to play a completely realistic world but I decided to go a bit off of reality for this one. Thus, perhaps some minor psychic or magical powers for the characters. No archmagi, vampires, werewolves or high fantasy. Technology should generally be 2013-era.
I apologize for setting up all these rules. I just don’t want this RP to develop into a godmod fest. I have a story somewhat planned out and will be acting as something of a “dungeon master,” determining the contents of the cave system and its denizens… Of course feel free to telegram me with story ideas. Well… tally-ho! Let’s get going…>>
Adolf von Wettiburg is a man somewhere in his early fifties with graying hair. Despite his age, he seems to be in excellent shape and understands mechanical equipment very well. He has quite a bit of experience coordinating and leading expeditions and will be heading up the group.
Colonel Joshua von Gillian is an obviously gay soldier of approximately forty years. He is short and built like a rock. His homosexuality somewhat clashes with his stout, dwarfish appearance and he can seem somewhat comical at times. However, his knowledge of demolitions is unmatched.
Andres von Lisenburg is tall and, unusual for an Edolia, red-haired. He is in his late twenties and is in incredible shape. He carries a wicked-looking saber and a small assortment of handguns and rifles.
Thomas von Blatterschplitt and his wife, Lilia von Endelburg are two of a kind. Their mousy, academic appearance is compounded by their complete lack of fashion sense. They seem to be deeply in love and utterly at home underground.
The three porters, Gigi von Lesurn, Karish von Lapis and Fonway von Islandia are three typical Edolians. They are well built with blonde hair and blue eyes. They have worked together before and have some experience spelunking. Besides being porters, they are also proficient in the use of handguns and assault rifles.
