In a first for the Continuous Armed Forces of Mokoville, the government OKed the island nation's first nuclear weapons test. A fusion device, equivalent to roughly three megatons, was dropped into international waters and detonated. The explosion, broadcast nationwide in a special news interruption, was celebrated as Mokoville's entrance into the global nuclear club.
An armed forces spokeswoman was quick to downplay fears and accusations of hostile intent, explaining that the weapons are for deterrence purposes.
"It is our sincere hope that such weapons will never have to be used. We cannot, however, stand idly aside and allow other nations to have a hostile military and political edge over Mokoville." explained spokewoman Lilka Pigspear.
The announcement was greeted by loud protests from some groups, but was otherwise celebrated or ignored.
